From Mike W - 28mm Orcs & Night Goblins (105 Points)

 Real life has held up my planned painting schedule this week, resulting in a small group of 20 x Orcs & Night Goiblins, that will join my exixting collection. These are also the last of the batch of figures that I prepared at the start of this challenge to get completed this year - so another small success!

The painting process was as per previous posts this year and thus they will hopefully seemlessly fit in with the rest of my collection!. 

I couldn't get ethe camera to focus on the figure and the banner at thesame time, so here is a close up of the banner. (with attached skull!)

There are 6 x Orcs that carry shields and 4 x Orcs armed with bows. There are also 6 x Orcs with either two hand weapons or a hand weapon and spear.

I have also painted an Orc Standard Bearer and painted the flag (albeit a Raggerty Orc Standard) by hand. Finally there are three Night Goblin Bowmen to complete the group.

ErikP - Digging Up Old Friends or Undead on the Rise for Midgard (points 35)

Hello Everyone,

For this week I have been digging these up from the grave.  Here are thirty-three (33) Wargames Atlantic 10mm foot Skeletons for the unit and command stand. 

When I was starting to base these figures, I realized that somehow I miscounted how many figures I needed to paint. I was short a 5-man strip short.  As you can see here, the stand on the right side is missing the second rank. I'll finish the missing 5-Skeletons up when I paint up the next unit. 

Other than that miscount, these figures have painted up pretty well.  

The only issue may be that these figures are a bit thin as compared to some of the other undead that I have seen for this scale.  I used grass tuffs to add a little contrast and detail to the bases.

Recently BruceR submitted some great 10mm skeletons that had very nice bulk to them.  He did a really wonderful job on his army, posted on Wednesday 28 Jan, his figures are from Forest Dragon, 3D printed and they are pretty nice.

I am planning on using my undead figures for playing Midgard Heroic Battles rules by James Morris.  This was a test unit and Command base that I wanted to try.  I also picked up Orcs, Dwarves, and Samuri & Ashigaru from Wargames Atlantic as well, so this is the start of another big project getting back into 10mm fantasy battles.

I plan on using movement trays of four stands for using Midgard rules.  I envision vast armies fighting the battle of five armies.  

These are going to replace the GW Warmaster Undead army I sold about 5-6 years ago, along with High Elves, and Chaos armies, what a mistake that was... Got to remember never sell projects you think you'll never go back too.  Leason learned, I hope. 

These were primed with GW Bone Color, then washed with Army Painter Strong Tone, followed by Speed Paints for shields and the banner. Since they are just skeletons, I kept it simple and just highlighted the bones with Vallejo's Off White, and Vallejo metallics for weapons.

Command stand banner Skull is decal from an old GW Imperial Guard transfer sheet I had in a drawer.

From Mike W - 28mm Greenskins (105 Points)

 So after a hiatus in my painting production last week, I'm gradually getting back into the swing, albeit that this post is a smaller contribution that I'm usually able to do.

This week I present a group of 21 Greenskins - 20 x Orcs plus one Night Goblin!

The reason for my hiccup in painting was that I succumbed to my wife's entirely reasonable request to redecorate my office / studio room! It's very hard to argue that I'm no good with a big paintbrush when I spend so much time painting with little ones! 😀

I was thinking I could claim a point or two basis this work being classed as terrain but no, that would bee too cheeky.

Back to the Orcs, the painting method was exactly the same as previously described an the 20 Orcs and single Night Goblin will be distributed to add numbers to existing regiments in my collection.

Because I don't have a lead pile to draw from, descending to the Quadrant Hub is not part of my Challenge journey. However... my brand new, sparkly 3D printer arrived last week, so my goal of completing all the planets may be achievable!

I'm currently on Terra, but my submission for this planet is not even close to ready! I am going to leap from Terra, into the Great Abyssal and fall, zoom, vaporize (?) myself to the Outer Ring. Flying past Skaro and the Death Star, as I have already paid my dues there. I find myself now on Caprica.

Caprica's requirement for completion is 'Doomed or Ambush'. A bit melodramatic, no? Ha ha!

 

 

I submit to you a Lightning Elemental. She is a force to be reckoned with! You would not want to be ambushed by her, as you would certainly be doomed on the tabletop! (See what I did there?!) i did look up what a lightning elemental can do and, played correctly, they can bring about some serious devastation. Cool.

 

This figure is from Printed Obsession on My Mini Factory. I know it isn't painted in a typical colour scheme for this type of figure, but I was trying to mimic the colours of a prairie sky during a lightning show. I used Aethermatic Blue Contrast an added Vallejo Model Metallic Air in Steel (71.065) to it with a heavy hand of water.  This created a nice shimmery wash. Over the bodice of the figure, I utilized the same technique, substituting Shyish Purple for the blue. The base and tips of the figure are coated with Dragon Glaze topcoat from Folk Art.

 

We have one planet left in this ring! Off to Istvaan V!

I had no idea what I was doing for this planet. I looked up about 100 things. I actually have two other figures printed, but I just felt 'meh' about them.

It is no secret that I don't have a clue about most of the gaming world, or the majority of science fiction references in the Challenge. I'm also not a history buff. I accept this about myself and thank the universe for google.

For this planet I went religion literal, rather than gaming lore literal.

"Heresy in the Catholic Church is the formal denial or doubt of a core doctrine of the Roman Catholic Church."

I present to you an altar of skulls. Barks, this one is for you! Even though I'm not in the Skull Duel, I wanted to finish the Challenge with at least one skull entry. Here are 200 skulls in heretical wonder!

 

One would have to think that worshipers at an altar of skulls would be in denial of at least one doctrine of the RC church. Also, I'm 100% sure that many of these skulls were obtained for the altar by some means of betrayal.

The altar is from Cults3d, as are the torches. The torches were not an easy print. Of 6, these were the best 2 and they aren't that great. I made them work, because I had a vision in mind and dammit, it was going to happen! I used a lot of Skeleton Horde contrast paint for this altar There are many layers of contrast, Nuln Oil and assorted shades of dry brushing. I picked out random skulls and added some lighter tones to give some depth. I am pretty happy with how it turned out. You may recognize the cultist from a previous entry.

 

Because this altar is printed with smoky black resin, if you hold it to the light, it appears to glow. Nifty.

 

Points:

Lightning Elemental  - 80 mm (I didn't scale it - oops) - 10 points

Skull Altar - 2.75x.75x1" - 4 points ... terrain scoring is a science unto itself. Please adjust as necessary!

Planet Bonuses - 40 points

From here we travel to the middle ring with our sites set on Arrakis.

Those two pieces look fantastic, Tasha! I'm going to treat the skull altar as a 40mm figure for points - scoring it as terrain would come to nought-point-two points {20 x [(2.75*0.75*1)/(6*6*6)]}.

From Curt: The Death Knight Poses an Important Question, while his Mooks Look On (40 Points)

When I posted my fantasy Star Wars entries a few weeks ago I didn't have the files for the not-Stormtroopers, so I just ran with what I had ready at the time. Nevertheless, it somehow just felt wrong, not having the classic White Bucketheads mucking in with their nasty overlords, so when I managed to chase down the STL files, I quickly got them printed and painted-up to add to my collection of villains.

These are the crossbow-armed versions of the Troopers. For additional variation, the talented folks over at One Gold Piece also offer a sword and shield set, along with a polearm-equipped squad. As we're now on the clock for the end of the Challenge, I decided to stick to the missile armed flunkies as they seem to have that iconic, hapless mook-with-a-blaster look about them (yes, they will be re-rolling any hits in our future games).

I primed the Troopers black and then oversprayed them using Krylon Ivory, which I think gives the armour a nice, smooth, satin finish. I then used an assortment of Contrast paints to pick out their gear and weapons. I wanted to keep them fairly high-contrast, to trace back to the iconic source material, so I kept it all very stripped-down and simple. 

As to the Death Knight, again, I didn't see any reason to overthink him too much. I kept his paintjob fairly minimalist, just using some colourshift colours on his spooky enchanted blade and working up some contrasting highlights for his gloss black armour.

It was fun going back to painting renaissance style 'puff & slash' for the Rebel prisoner's uniform. Funny, working on him made me a little nostalgic for my Italian Wars stuff - I may need to do-up a few more Landsknechts to quash those silly romantic notions. :)

These guys being so high-contrast, photographing them was a bit of a nightmare (one of the inherent limitations of my older iPhone camera). Anyway, I hope you can get a sense of what they look like.

Points wise? Well, we have seven 30mm figures, plus one at a 40mm for the Death Knight. That should put me at 42 points total (with one grim skull for Barks, peeping out of the Big Baddie's coal-scuttle helm).

Impressive. Most impressive. The ivory is satisfying, and the whole project forces you to do a double-take. The puff-and-slash has come out very nicely- but you won't find me in a hurry to do an army of them! +1 to the pile o' skullz.

From PeteF Goblins for Arda (50 points)

 

My background is in historical wargaming and many moons ago, when I was thinking about branching out into fantasy there were no skeletons, orcs, goblins, ogres, lizards, dwarves or elves on my shelf of shame*.  Fortunately a generous local wargamer gave me a bunch of Night Goblins for my SAGA Age of Magic army. I've been a bit slow bringing them to the table - other projects distracted.

If you've not played SAGA - I highly recommend it for it's innovative activation system - it's a great skirmish game to give you an excuse to paint up new historical or fantasy factions or dust off some minis that haven't seen a table for a while. It can be competitive or friendly depending on your preference. I introduced SAGA Age of Vikings to my local group a year or so before the pandemic and it's gained a life of its own - now we have Age of Magic, Age of Crusades, Age of Hannibal and Age of Invasions - with more to come!

A few of these night goblins got painted for Challenge XI - I went with red hoods because there are "Red Goblins" in Mantic's Kings of War fluff. I'll eventually put magnets on them so they can be ranked up on metal trays for Kings of War. They got red shoes like the old pope.  I'm trying to get more hilighty with the light gray on the black cloaks - still looking for tips on this - would dry brushing work better?

Picking out the teeth was enjoyable - nice sculpts from an earlier time at GW.

Well these old school Gobbos are the Pope's Shoes Pete!  Love the red on the shows, cloaks and those little chromes on the standard.  I confess to not having taken to SAGA, I find it rather gamey but that's likely because it doesn't suit my rather linear thought processes.  

From KyleC - Tomb - Skeletal Force - 985pts

 Ok so apologies.. I had hoped to have some of this painting done sooner, but February has been a tough month to get through.. more so than January and that was quite bleek. And being as how it was all bleek it was a good time to get into the Undead force I have been printing in the background here. Or at least the Heroes and Core Units for it. 

And um.. yeah it might be a bit of a points dump as well here.. but it was more that it all fit the chamber criteria best so... sorry?

So it is for a new game system ( to me anyways ) that our local club wants to get into post lockdown. Game is called Oathmark. It has the old fantasy battle feel for it, but with the ability to mix and match units and races based on how you build up your kingdom. I picked undead/humans for the most part, with the main reason being I had a ton of Skeleton Files from Patreons that I wanted to print up, and then I got a bit carried away! 

So here is the Lord of the Kingdom, Ostoc Bardolf of Festerthorne, Head Lich Priest of the kingdom. Model is from Warploque Miniatures Digital range ( and excuse the blurry shots.. am trying to relearn the proper camera here.. not quite there yet ). 

The rest of the characters have yet to be named, but taking suggestions!

Then I did up 3 units of each Archers, Soldiers ( Sword and Shield), and Spearmen. All being a mix of Warploque and Highland Miniature files. Each unit was 20 models. 

And then of course the Tombs from which they crawl out of.. I had planned to paint up a church to go with it, but then one of the Kickstarters I have backed announced that we will be getting a church from it.. so the one I have is tiny in comparison, so it got back burnered for now. 

The larger tomb entrances I found on thingiverse, so not sure where they are from exactly. Caretaker skeleton by Warploque. And Viking burial tombs by Asgard Rising. 

All told it is 191 models, and half a box of terrain pieces? So that's about...

191*5 = 955 pts

Half a box of terrain = 10 pts? Maybe less?

Chamber Challenge = 20 pts

Giving this post 985 pts there about? I had thought about doing up one more unit to make it 10 full units to show off, but my airbrush decided to spit its dummy out and have a fit, and I don't have energy to deal with it right now to work on another unit. 

Expect more from this army in the following posts, and chambers, as they seem to fit nicely for level 3. And more so that I have a lot of the more special units to tackle.. just have to adjust without an airbrush potentially... 

Unholy crap! I'm getting all the treats today! That is one heck of a points bomb, Kyle. And one heck of a backdrop for the photos - will we be seeing all those 3D-printed buildings painted up sometime soon?
