From GrahamB: Greeks and Roman Camels (210 points)

This week's submission has been in the lead pile for a long time.  These are the first Greek Hoplites I have ever painted in over 50 years of wargaming and have come out OK.  They are Old Glory figures that I purchased over 15 years ago when the figures were ridiculously good value, especially with a USD/GBP exchange rate, the Old. Glory army card discount and a stupidly cheap deal on.

Secondly here are some Hinchliffe ancient camels and camel riders.  These can appear as a small Roman unit or even substitute for several other classic army’s that used camels.

30 Hoplites @ 5 pts = 150 plus 6 mounted @ 10 pts = 60 points.

Very nice to see a Challenger tackle a subject they have been waiting on for a long time. Brings to mind my constant pledges to paint some 28mm Romans. I mean, I'll get to it one of these days...

From Jez Todd: Week 12 - Landsknechts - 15 points

 Hi All

Bit slow week as only 3 figures painted - still I suppose they are Landsknechts. Got sidetracked in touching up my Imperialist army - the lead is mainly old Hinchcliffe, painted ...ahem ...over 30 years ago! They needed a freshen up as they all looked a bit dated, not helped by the "old school" way I had based them up. As I play Impetus I wanted to use more of the diorama basing style I have with the more recent armies.

Anyway what better way to freshen up a unit than by adding an extra standard bearer. This is a  Hinchcliffe artillery figure, that has one of the brilliant Pete's flag standards. I switched and added him into the back base for a pike block.

The second figure is a Foundry shot - I needed him to make up the missing figure for another skirmish unit. Chose the classic yellow as really wanted to show that it was a Landsknecht unit.

Finally I had an Artisan halberdier that was kicking around. I added him to another couple of foot to make a foot command base - handy if I decide to put my General with a pike unit.

So just 15 points - will try to get another post in just to finish off the Challenge. Have a great final few days all.

Cheers Jez

From JonathanO: Ancient Assyrian Slingers (45 points)

As well as finding models to paint to complete the tour of the Chambers of Challenge,  I am trying to make some progress on a few different projects.  One of these projects is completing painting up my collection of old 25mm ancient Assyrians.

These miniatures are well over 30 years old and are by Hinchliffe.  They are based on 120mm frontage skirmish unit bases for use with Impetus, Sword & Spear and To The Strongest rules.

Hopefully, there will be a few more old school miniatures for this project later in the challenge.

For points that should be 9 infantry at 5 points each = 45 points.

In my Race to 800 Points duel with ScottM, I am still trailing him by a long way: 326 to 203

Another victim coming back for more!

I've always wanted an Assyrian army, so I was rather shocked at myself when I bought Nubians and Sea Peoples as my first "biblical" era forces.

Lovely work on these old Hinchliffe figures and 45 more points towards your target.

Iain W Elderly Gendarmes ( 170 points)

Here are 2 units of Gendarmes each of 8 mounted 28mm figures the first unit is the elderly unit in the title as they are venerable Hinchcliffe figures from long ago last century! As they were an ebay purchase the horses are from various sources and indeed as some of them came without heads I was forced to add perry heads to a couple, which have turned out surprisingly well I think. I used Hans Burgkmair's The Triumph of Maximillian as my source in painting them ,  I added some vines and flowers which are in other period illustrations , these are not terribly succesfull but they are done now and I'm buggered if I'm going back to them! En masse I'm happy with them and they were relatively cheap! The next batch are Old Glory and I wasn't looking forward to them but I think they have come out rather well and I enjoyed painting them, rather more geometric patterns which works well at this scale and fun with the lances, the (rather oversize looking now)banners are overpainted downloads.
This should give me 160 points which would leave me 25 points short of my total , I have another unit of Gendarmes and some bits and bobs so I should make that.
I do have a Curt geld dilemma as I have nothing arranged and the end is looming, I have got 2 nice renaissance figures that go together well, if anyone fancies painting the other one drop me a line at caveadsum1471@yahoo .com and I'll pop it in the post to you.
These should also count in my renaissance side challenge with Curt
All the best Iain

The Italian Wars have some of the most colorful units in history(to include historic personna equally colorful in name, atire, and character)The Gendarmes have always been my favorite ever since I seen some period prints which portrayed Roland and his men as Gendarmes. Big men in metal suits on big horses in metal suits and carrying colorful pointy sticks. These fellows more than live up to the expectation and I quite enjoy the colors and paterns you used on them. There is absolutely no mistaking them for their task. Beautifuly done, Iain!

From JonathanO: Assyrian Archers(45 points)

In the last Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge I was working on my old collection of Ancient Assyrians.  I hope to make further progress with this army during this challenge.

Here are 9 Assyrian archers.  These are based as skirmishers on 12cm x 3cm bases suitable for use with Impetus or Sword and Spear rules.  Two of the bases can be combined to form a supporting archer unit, if necessary.  I kept to my bright colour scheme for this army.

The figures are from Hinchliffe Miniatures.  These are still available today, but my castings are from the 1980's and they will finally make it to the wargames table this year!

This should add 45 points to my tally.

Cheers,
Jonathan

I have been collecting toy soldiers far longer than I have been gaming with them. Hinchliffe is right up there between Marx and Elastolin. Usually I am bothered by same-pose-itis of my forces, but I do make exceptions for the older models. You did vary the colors and still captured the old Barclay Podfoot and Britians look that nails the nostalgia for me. I'm still waiting for the Tomes from Featherstone and HG Wells, but my wife says they are pricey! ;)
