From AndrewG: A Few Pulp Era Bad Guys (25 points)

As we begin to wind down on this year's challenge, I'm now just focused on finishing up whatever is still sitting on my painting desk from the beginning of winter. There's a few small war band bits and bobs to do for various games, including these nefarious looking chaps.

This crew consists of five metal figures from Bob Murch's Pulp Figures - specifically the Weird Menance line (PWM). I first saw these figures way back in 2003 when I attended Historicon. I had signed up for one of Bob's Rugged Adventures games and he was playing a scenario from their China Station campaign. Needless to say the game was great fun and I picked these characters up expecting that I would eventually use them for something. Unfortunately, they went into storage and, well, here we are.

Interestingly, I had originally painted them in red cloaks to stand out, but then changed my mind and repainted them similar to what appears on the Pulp Figures website. As such one might notice a slight red tint in the clothing. Overall, they were a quick job, and they'll do nicely for some interwar skirmish games we have planned for this year.

Very simply, 5x 28mm figures = 25 points

Great looking cultists, Andrew. These Bob Much sculpts are so wonderfully characterful and your paintwork really does them justice. I think you were right to eschew red and go with purple (Nyarlathotep will be pleased). Well done!

I partially painted several confederate sprues of Warlord Epic while on vacation leaving the fiddly stuff for home.  This is the last of those that will make the challenge. This is the 5th Texas:

 

 

Eventually I will dig up another metal command strip and paint up a second command stand in this uniform and split this large group into two regiments.

Painted in a similar way to previous regiments, this currently larger unit of 100 figures * 2 points is worth 200 points.

I realized I hadn’t painted a single Bob Murch Female Adventurer this challenge.  Obviously the only thing to do was to grab a few from primed pile.  So I present some misunderstood, often underestimated female cultists.  The High Priestess and her equally evil assistant:

The dagger was painted with a dark purple/green color shifting paint that obviously does not like an overhead led light. Two 28mm cultists for 10 points.  Duels remain unchanged.

A great final entry, Tom. While I very much admire your Reb infantry, I have to say my heart is with those Bob Murch female cultists (those sculpts are so characterful). Such a tough gig, being a cultist, but you've made them quite glamorous here. Well done!

From ChrisW: Another fine mix I've gotten in to (330 points)

 

VSF armoured vehicles [3x28mm vehicles 60 points]

These are 3d printed Quar tanks now in the service of the Japanese army on Mars. They have been painted to match up with some previously painted Japanese armoured vehicles. The two big ones will be troop transports while the smaller one will be used for close support. 

They were primed black and based with Vallejo German red primer. This was dry brushed with craft paint cinnamon and paprika. The treads were painted with a grey craft paint then GW Contrast Gore- Grunta fur. That was then dry brushed over with P3 metal paint and a craft paint autumn colour. There was also at least one dark wash added  between base and dry brush.

So, the smaller blue one is a grenadier while the other one is an assault tripod, this one referred to as the Red Tripod. The Red tripod has a glitter/laser device on his head and a side carapace mounted speaker. Both are special add ons for this special tripod. I used a dollar store rhinestone 'gem' while the horn/speaker was made from something I had just lying around. (boy I sure hope I don't find out that I needed it for something else) 

The write up on the red tripod suggests that it might be a bit insane, so I added some human skeletons as trophies and used 'blood' to decorate it. On the base you can see some red weed beginning to grow and a splatter of blood.

It's, a bug hunt!        [11x 28mm bugs 55 points]

These are from Pulp Figures although I could not find a current listing. The big one is a resin cast with metal  'arms', while the brood are one piece metal. It took a while for me to figure out what colours to use and I made a few attempts before settling in on what I used. I figure the big one is the colour that the little ones will eventually change into. Most likely I will use these in some Pulp Alley games, but for now they will be added to my ever growing alien creature collection.

Evil deep sea diver minions  [12x 28mm deep sea diver minions 60 points]

These minis are from Recreational Conflict and have only been in my possession for a couple of years. 

They were primed with a khaki primer, washed with a brown/black wash the some P3 jack bone highlights over a khaki base. 

The sea shells were bought years ago just because I thought they might come in handy some day, they did.

Explorers of Egypt            [6x 28mm  30 points] 

Some Blue moon, Brigade and Pulp Figures miniatures. Being in Egypt I went with a typical mix of Khaki colours for most of them. The lady in the blue skirt does stand out a bit with her shadowed lines courtesy of contrast painted jacket and touched up contrast blue skirt.

Jungle explorers                        [6x 28mm 30 points]

A mix of figures, Pulp Figures. Copplestone, Crooked Dice and maybe a Brigade miniatures. I apologize for the rather gauche neon yellow/green figure, just looking for different colours to use for my pulp adventurers.

I painted this figure with only contrast paints, except for the teeth. While I often use the various contrast/speed/express paints to put down a base coat then follow up with more traditional paints, this time around I wanted to see if I could tolerate the results without the additional touch up. Well, he is serviceable (and looks better in person) but I am not really sold on the end result. I will check in on him from time to time, but I suspect I will be doing some highlights.

Back of Beyond Chinese Mortar        [25 points]

Some more Copplestone miniatures BoB. These have been mostly completed for a few weeks, just the basing and a few touch ups being required. I kind of rushed the basing and picture taking such that you can still ee the undried white glue, whoops.

Sylvain: As I was going through your post, I just saw more and more pictures of miniatures... like there was no ending to it! You are a master not only in quantity but also in quality. From ChrisW: Cultists and one Big stompy tripod [165 points]

 

This weeks output. The terrain piece will be submitted to our terrain overlord at some point.

Up first some Pulp urbane urban cultists. [22x 28mm 110 points]

Mostly Pulp Figures miniatures, but I cannot remember where the guys with the yellow circles came from. I used contrast Magos purple on them for the robes. It took two coats to get them to the right colour. While I do like the contrast paints as they can give me dark base and a highlight, I do not usually use them alone. Usually I use more traditional paints to add detail or more highlights. However, for these I just went with the two coats of contrast. For the most part I like the outcome, but some of the shadows are a bit dark. I really wish I could locate the right highlight paints for the various Contrast/Speed/Express etc paints. In this case I just do not have the right purple.

More cultists, this time maniacal Cultist enthralled by Egyptian deities! [7x 28mm 35 points]

These were painted in a more traditional approach. A few layers of Vallejo reds; Burnt red base, dark vermilion dry brush/overbrush, Amaranth red and Orange red highlights. The flesh is Guilliman flesh with some Cadian  flesh touch ups. I already have quite a few cultists in red, but mostly a darker red.. While these are still red there is a nice lighter shade of red orange that alters the colour somewhat.

Why does it take a picture to reveal any glitches? I missed this in 'real' life.

So, not certain who makes this, I picked it up at an estate sale. It has a great pulp look to it that could see it in a pulp alley game or maybe a super hero game. For now I have based it up for AQMF. In that game I would use it as a proxy for a royal tripod.

It was primed with silver rattle can, then a base of metallic speed paint, Nuln wash and some highlight paint that I do not remember right now. The base is a combination of resin ruins with the central  area being made up of cork rubble.

I only decided to paint the Egyptian cultists Tuesday morning. As a result some other projects that were nearing the end got delayed. So next week I should have the following ready; 28mm Pulp Explorers (Maybe 10 of them), 6 28mm shield maidens, some VSF 28mm vehicles, maybe some more tripods too.

So the old me, that is when I was younger, would have pushed on through the evening to get as much pone as possible. However the new older me just does not have that drive anymore. By rights I should be pumping out more stuff than this, I am retired, it is winter (so I am trapped inside) and I have no other pressing matters. Yet I just don't get to my stuff as often in the week as I should. To much hibernating! 

The thing is once I start working on things I find I really enjoy it. On the few days that I do work on stuff I can be quite productive. I just rarely work on stuff more than two days in a row. Still, all in all this challenge really does get me motivated.  Without it I really would just be in the basement avoiding our lovely winter!

Sylvain: Despite your comments about the highlights, I find that you nailed the purple robes. Your bunch of cultists will bring lots of hours of fun gaming to the table top. I also like your tripod, it looks wacky and mean all at the same time. I counted your legged machine as a 28mm vehicle for 20 points. Bravo!
