From EdwardG - A quartet of 6mm redcoats (History Section - 130pts)

 Hej hej all,

Having been languishing at the bottom of the table for a while now, I'm happy to finally be able to show what I've been working on! Due to family commitments my painting time is very limited. At best I get about 10min before work starts, and perhaps the odd dot of paint can be added during a particularly tedious meeting. So it has taken over a month to get these chaps done, compared to the couple of weeks that it might have done once!

My main target for this challenge has been to work on my two main 6mm projects; the Allied forces at Quatre Bras (hopefully eventually Waterloo!), and the UK 3rd Armoured Division in 1985. The Allied forces have been shown in previous challenges, and I'm not far off now. Funnily, I've only got the British 3rd Division still to go. This also being my 3rd challenge, I'm hoping it's going to keep being lucky!

For the first formation of the 1815 project is the British 5th Brigade, commanded by Major-General Sir Colin Halkett K.C.B. Composed of Peninsula vetern battalions, the brigade contained the 2/30th, 1/33rd, 1/69th, 2/73rd battalions. These chaps had an unlucky time of it on the real day. Having arrived at the field about 5pm, they were caught in line by French cuirassier. The 69th having the ignominious loss of their King's Colour, to add to the substantial number of casualties. They were the only ones to ever suffer such a fate while under Wellington.

To add to the submission I've also managed to paint up the Divisional Artillery (Lloyd's Battery RA and Cleeves' Battery KGLFA King's German Legion), some skirmishers and the Divisional command stand of Lieutenant-General Count Sir Charles Alten KCB and ADCs.

In addition, I'm claiming the Historical section bonus, as 1815 is pretty historical.

Now for some photos. As before, sorry for the quality, I'm reduced to taking snaps on the phone at the painting desk (which is also the working desk!)

The British 5th Brigade

For points, I'd score the following:

Infantry: 160 x 6mm foot = 80pts

Skirmishers: 12 x 6mm foot = 6pts

Artillery: 6 x (1 gun + 4 crew) = 18pts

Commanders: 6 x 6mm mounted = 6pts

Section bonus - History section bonus = 20pts

Total = 130pts!!

Also entry into the Really Little Guys and Napoleonic duels!

I'm on a business trip to Tokyo in a week, for a week. Rather whirlwind travel plans, but the hope is a few jetlag sleepless nights in a hotel and I'll have some more minis to show when I return!

Best,

Ed 😀

Ed, how the heck do you see these guys and get so much details on them! I struggle with the 8mm marines for Epic, but these are historical 6mm! Insane work here! And a great bomb of points to go with it all! Wonderful work here!

130 pts for you!

From Rhunt - Fantasy and Sci-Fi ( 140 pts)

This week is a mix of Sci-fi (Star Wars Legion) and Sci-Fi. First off I'm finally done with the elves. This is the wizard for them. She was really hard to paint.

There is so much detail on this model. I tried really hard to make her look right but she was very hard. Dad showed me a sculpture where it looks like she is wearing something over her face and this model has the same thing. (edit: the Veiled Virgin by Giovanni Strazza)

She has parts of the model going in all different directions.

I'm really glad to have the elves done. I was saving this one for last because she made me so nervous with how hard she'd be to paint.

Next up is an elf that I'm using for Pathfinder and a knight in a bucket helm.

The elf is an Oathmark elf my dad gave me and let me build by myself. I used one of the shields from the GW elves.

The knight is a Bones model but the other one is really cool. My dad got a lot of Oathmark models and I really like elves.

Bones in the bone cold winter.

This is a Bones bandit or rogue. he's out in the snow, so I put snow on the base and on his hood/cloak thingy.

The snow on his back. It looks better from farther away.

I was surprised that we had snow cover but Dad found an old package of GW snow that I was able to use for this model.

This next one is a metal miniature. She's going to take me on the library cart from the first room to the Sci-Fi section.

Dad didn't know he gave me this one. (Editors note: I did not, in fact, give him this one, wretched child. She is a great model though so I understand why he grabbed her).

We think this one is a rogue from the Rangers of Shadow Deep line. She's really cool.

Next up is more Bones. These are all female models that dad gave me. They are also in the snow/winter.

I was all over the place this week. I also have some more role playing models.

The Tortle and viking go with the rogue. Dad printed these for me.

The last entry is some Star Wars Legion models. This is two commanders, a crashed X-Wing pilot and some droids. Dad made me go back and add more paint to the commanders.

Before on the commanders.

And now after I added more paint to the two commanders.

That's a new room in the library and the cart and 18 models.

5 x 32mm x 7 pts = 35 pts

13 x 28mm x 5 pts = 65 pts

Library Cart = 20 pts

Sci-Fi room bonus = 20pts

Total = 140 pts

Great job Rhys, and a lovely collection of models once again. I think the extra time put on the commanders was well worth the effort, though would also remind you to paint the base rims a similar color to bring harmony in the army. It adds extra Universal Force to your gaming, something very helpful in Star Wars gaming I hear.

Some great bits here to pick out though. Especially the elves' veil work. Not an easy thing to do, but great effort here. Can see what you were trying to achieve which is all that matters!

And the snow effect on Bones. Great use of the GW snow flock. Could suggest to help push it more, is to add a bit of light grey or light blue paint to the areas that you will add the flock. It will emphasis the snow effect, and give it some extra depth.

Smashing through the models (legally acquired or not) and the sections as well. Great job.

140 pts for you

From DallasE: 15mm Space Marines in Sci-Fi! (60 points)

Well I suppose I have Challenger GregB to thank for this one... I had Challenger ByronM do some 3D printing for me, and when I went to pick up the prints Byron told me that Greg had asked him to print me some 15mm Space Marines! Cool!

So somewhat on a whim and as a palate cleanser, I knocked out the 20 models Byron had printed for me. Originally I was considering painting them as Iron Warriors, but these beakies were just begging to be painted in the blood-red power armour of the Blood Drinkers. It's just a bonus that the chapter insignia is super-easy to put on the shoulder pads with a black technical pen :-)

These guys all carry boltguns of course. But once these guys were painted I had to get in touch with Byron to print me some more dudes with heavy weapons, as well as some vehicles. Escalation!!

For the record, the paint job was pretty straightforward. Basecoated Mephiston Red, heavily highlighted with Evil Sunz Scarlet, then washed with Nuln Oil, Backpacks and boltguns are Leadbelcher washed with Nuln Oil.

These two are the start of a command squad I reckon. We'll see what else Mr. B can come up with for me.

Here's a comparo shot of my 40K scale Blood Drinker with his tiny colleagues.

Scoring:
20x 15mm infantry = 40 points
Sci-Fi section bonus = 20 points
Total: 60 points

Thanks for looking!

Ooo never seen/heard of 15mm space marines.. Considering 40k is in 28mm, and Epic now is 8mm it feels off to see them in 15mm now ( and why do I want some to paint myself now! ).

They look the business here for sure, and a quick 60 pts for you

From PeteF: Sea Nymphs in the Romance Section (35 points)

At first glance, The Pile of Potential didn't seem to have anything for the Romance section. Then I found this sculpt at the bottom of a box of odds and ends bought as a job lot a few years ago.  I purchased the lot for some eagle riders and tree men, never thinking I'd have a reason to paint these sea nymphs. Nothing says Romance like The Baroque.

Flesh/nudes are super hard to paint and I'm no expert - I watched 3 or 4 You Tube videos for ideas and had a couple of false starts.  I'm reasonably happy with the end result - it's not great but it's given me the desire to keep working at it and do better next time.  I think thinner paints and more glazes are called for.

As long as they don't offend I can use these as a playing piece in Kings of War - there's a faction known as Trident Realms who have various magic users that could be represented by these nymphs.

3 x 28mm nymphs plus bonus for the Romance section for 35 points(?)

With 3 sections done in room 2, I'm ready to move to an adjacent room... or perhaps skip one using Lady Sarah's Cart.

Wonderful interpretation of the section here Pete, and a great piece for it as well. Agreed that skin can be very difficult to get right, especially on female sculpts. Being that if you shadow too much, you can overage the model. If you don't do enough it can look so simple. Glazes, and the like, are the way!

Great piece, and 35 pts for you

From MikeF - Steel Legion Heavy Weapons - 60 points

Continuing with my Steel Legion Imperial Guard projects is a group of heavy weapon: 2 lascannons and a heavy bolter. These were purchased for a ridiculous sum of money from GW's made-to-order FOMO scam that caters to suckers like me. Thankfully, I'm close to done with this army and hopefully I can get the rest done by challenge end. I'm not sure on the points though. Artillery is 10 points, but I'm not sure if the crew are included in that total. If so, these are 30 points. If not, 60 points.

Thanks for visiting!

Quick, concise, and to the point there Mike. Great work.
As far as I am aware, the artillery pieces are separate from the infantry, so therefore its 60 pts. Am sure if I have gotten it wrong also, I will be informed by the other Minions, but thats how I would play it out as.

Concerning the models and painting themselves.. great job here! They look ready to take down some oppositions armor quite quickly in that setup!

60 pts for you

JezT - Single Priest - Gripping Beast (5 points)

 Hi All

Just a single figure post from me this week so only 5 points but as the UK gamers know from the supermarket advert - "every little helps".

This is a Gripping Beast dark age priest that missed my initial post earlier this challenge but pleased got him finished now rather than remaining in the lead pile.

Diorama pose with other figures posted earlier

So just 5 points for me .....

Cheers Jez

And a welcomed 5 pts he is! Am sure he will help inspire your troops to do their best in battle.. or to condemn those trying to attack his cart.

Great work Jez

From DallasE: Germans in the Travel section! (105 points)

Arriving in the Travel stack with some more hairy dudes! I've painted 17 more ancient Germanic tribesmen with spears for this entry.

Now a bit of a word about "Travel"... the section description is "something that impressed you from your own travels." Well, my late wife Pam and I visited Germany on our second Euro-expedition back in 2012 and it was an amazing trip. We visited the Porsche and Mercedes-Benz museums in Stuttgart, drove a rented car on the Nurburgring Nordschleife, and did all kinds of other cool stuff, including visiting the ancient Roman town of Trier. Now that was such a cool visit, if you haven't been, it's awesome. Nestled in the valley of the Mosel river, Trier is reputedly Germany's oldest city, founded by the Romans in 16 BC as "Augusta Treverorum" (the city of Augustus among the Treverii). There are still heaps of Roman ruins and structures to visit in the city and the Porta Negra (Black Gate) dates back to the 4th century. So it was always gonna be some ancient Germans or Early Imperial Romans in this stack, and I've gone with the Germans. Trier is in modern Germany after all.

Here is the gang of 17 painted for this post. The three command models in the top photo were painted for a previous Challenge entry.

Models are from Wargames Foundry with shields and decals from Warlord Games.

I particularly like the chap on the right end of the line - he reminds me of a young Conan :-)

Anyway there's 17 more done for my WAB army. I think next I might paint some more Romans.

Scoring:

17 28mm infantry x 5 points = 85 points

Travel section bonus = 20 points

Total: 105 points

Cheers!

Great work on these Germanic Warriors here. Very bright and lively, ready to take to the Romans and give them what for indeed! Also great explanation of the travel aspect.. haven't been to Trier yet, but have been to Stuttgart and the Nurburgring. Always a great time when near there!

105 pts for you!

From BenitoV: Strolling through the Fantasy Room (30 points)

New Sunday, new post in the Painting Challenge. I continued my visit to the Section 1 of the Library... and being a long-time fan of all-things Tolkien, it'd been a sin not spending time in the Fantasy section.

A bit of background: Following the release of the Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings films trilogy in the early 2000, I fell into the trap of the Games Workshop's shiny film-related miniatures and skirmish rules. I build and paint Uruk Hai, Orcs and Gondor units, as well as a plethora of the main characters (the whole Fellowship, Sauron, Isildur, Galadriel, etc). Played this game a lot a lot but after 2-3 years took a back seat when I shift my sights in other historical projects.

Then, one of my club friends contacted me during the summer holidays inquiring if I'd be interested in returning to play fantasy games in a LOTR environment when the new playing season started in autumn. Having news that Too Fat Lardies was working on a set of medieval rules (Midgard) with application to a fantasy universe, this was a straight yes.

I needed to fill some gaps in my armies, specially mounted units. So I did some Google research aiming initially to buy old GW models second hand... until I discovered an almost infinite range of 3D models available, many of very high quality.

This is a mounted Orc Shaman in 28mm from Ebora Miniatures. It serves as the paint test for a unit of orcs mounted on Wolfs (or Wargs?) already printed and queuing now in my paint table (together with some half-done Late Roman cavalry).

The post today will add 30 points to my Challenge scoring:

1 x 28mm Mounted Model @10 points = 10 points

Bonus Fantasy Books Section = 20 points

Total = 30 points

Brilliant entry today Benito! And yes, the world is but your oyster when it comes to 3D printing these days.. with nearly anything and everything being available in one shape, form or whathave you. Great paint there, and whole unit of them will be terrifying.

30 pts for you!
