From JezT: Silver Bayonet Part 2 - Assorted 28mm (22 points)

Dear All, 

Its a Thursday so must be time for some more snow bases and Silver Bayonet figures? This is my second batch and just four figures for 20 points. Pleased with these as they mean I can now field a squad and hopefully shortly play my first game. All were painted with Games Workshop paints. 

The basing style came about by chance when I was doing Part 1 as I started using some clear bases and initially just placed some snow basing on the metal part of the figure; I liked the way it looked as the terrain sheet will show through the base on the table and I am only planning to use these as individual skirmish figures. 

In more detail - first up we have the squad leader. The leader is Marshall Ney from Giants in Miniature to which I made a few conversions. I beefed up the musket as the original was a bit skimpy, I especially wanted a cartridge box and added this and a backpack. Originally I tried to sculpt a cartridge belt with Milliput, but the result was a bit clunky, so I pragmatically decided to paint it as a blanket role.   

As I am using a French squad option I really wanted to include a Vivandiere. I am not sure of the maker origin of the female figure and don't think it was a Napoleonic figure; I added in the wine bottle as her sustenance for the squad (not sure if that will go very far). 

The next two are North Star figures and painted them to fit in with the French squad. I like the sculpting of both of these and the male figure can take on a variety of squad roles - Junior Officer, Veteran Hunter and so on. 

So four figures and just a simple 20 points for me.

TeemuL: You are absolutely right, snow bases, Silver Bayonet and Napoleonics are exactly what the world is expecting from Thursdays and that is exactly what Thursdays are delivering! Nice addition to your squad and good luck with your games. Interesting to hear your story about the discovery of the basing style, sometimes accidents are great innovations. As it seems to be a tradition of today, I'll give you two bonus points for conversion work and telling the story of the bases. :)

From PeteF: Charlie Don't Surf (on the Casting Couch) (25 points)

 

It's been a tough couple of weeks for hobbying - a family wedding took me back to the old country and I was assured there was not enough room in my luggage for paints. I've also had to put some time into a model I started before the challenge (see below) which I'll need for a tournament at the end of the month.

Nevertheless - I had time this weekend to get to work on Lt Colonel Kilgore.  The model is from the Wargames Illustrated Giants In Miniature series.  I was ordering from North Star as the challenge started and had to have this one for the movie theme.

Vietnam war gaming is a little too modern for me so he likely won't be seeing action in that conflict - maybe there'll be a place for him in a Death Fields game when Wargames Atlantic finally publish the rules.

He was a lot of fun to paint - but it brought to mind a lot of the movie - not just "that gasoline smell..." but Captain Willard's whole journey.  

One 28mm foot figure for 5 points plus 20 for the Casting Couch. No skullz or squirrels.

Speaking of squirrels - this is Bill Kilgore next to a giant that distracted me this weekend.  I've been working on him since October - or was it August?  Nearly ready for the table but sadly not eligible for Challenge Points!

That's a great figure, Pete! As for the giant, it could count for the "Under Construction" studio, even if only for the studio bonus points.

From Jez Todd: Week 11 AVBCW - More Stuff 65 points

 Hi All 

This week I went back to AVBCW era for some painting as especially wanted to finish some vehicles. First up though is my force commander - rather suitably for my pro-government "conservative" forces I am using the Wargames Illustrated Giants in Miniature character figure of Lord Kitchener.

I have two new vehicles. First up is from First Corps and is the civilian open top car, which I decided to make into the army staff car for the General. Did a quick head swap for the ciyy driver and filed away to amend another civy supplied figure as I specifically a replica model of the General to be in the vehicle - my starting inspiration was the moustache which I thought matched! 

             Keep your eyes on the road driver - maybe better head swap position next time! 

That meant that for the proper Warlord Games staff car vehicle I decided to paint up as another police car squad vehicle. 

Finally I have a couple of extra character figures, although this could be the start of a "Downton Abbey" militia type squad..... these are from Footsore. 

Ah Prince of Wales check pattern if I'm not mistaken. Am perpetuating the British class system so only his Lordship gets the better grassland tuft for the base - nothing for the plebs!

Altogether that should be 2 vehicles for 40 points plus 15 for the three characters and 10 for the driver and vehicle commander so 65 in total! Smashes me through the 500 point barrier!

From Jez Todd: Week 6 - AVBCW Character (5 points)

 Hi Everyone, 

So far managing to keep to my own personal challenge of posting once a week with something. This week only a single 5 pointer figure though.

The figure is part of the Wargames Illustrated "Giants in Miniature" range and is the Adrian Carton De Wiart figure that I bought for myself as a Christmas present! Apparently only 500 of these are made and according to the card I got mine was number 247/500. Please check out the website for the figure background as he has a fascinating history - a Belgian aristocrat who fought in WW1 and II. The figure was perfect for me as a character for my AVBCW campaign troops.

I am building up government forces for a game using Bolt Action rules but set in the mythical campaign of a 1930's British Civil War. Rather than a  squad member I thought I would use the figure as a spy character for some scenarios and added an armband with the British Union Of Fascists symbol. With his eye patch and one arm I think he looks the part!

AVBCW is mythical but if you are interested here's a link from a more academic historical magazine West Midlands History which has some interesting background and gives the BUF insignia.
