gluttony from the glutton- DavidB(234 points)

exploding orange paint pots in the wet pallet... it must be tuesday

So, I have made it to Gluttony. It has been an interesting day and several of the following are still very much so wet. I could have delved deeper into the mountain of neglect, but honestly as hobbyists we are by nature gourmands of Gluttony. The holidays brought its own chaos and then funnerals followed by hospitalizations and finding myself rapidly progressing to family elder. I have not had much time to properly sort my hobby space which is fine as I mostly know where things are...even if they are buried beneath primed models or new 3D prints. I am still unsure if it hobbyist hell or nirvana, but it does represent my cluttered mind and I am calmer when sitting before the disordered mess.

My  family did give me a new rolling tote which cleared stuff from my desk.

some are still balanced precariously atop shoeboxes...also precariously balanced.

And now I can kinda see troops awaiting more paint( I know a lot are sorta done and some not so much, but there are also some more troops stashed in ' organizing drawers" just behind this as they need some highlighting and metallics and are really almost done and need to be kept safe from splashing paint and precariously stacked miniatures.
Such is my organizational skills that one Corvus Cabal minion was lost under a lot of primed WW2 vehicles. He was quickly painted today so I can place him with his crew.

The terrain is some 3D prints from thingverse and are intended as generic terrain. A ruined three piece medieval church and an arched ruin and ruined well. I will print up the church again at some point, but remove the wooden timbers as they make it seem more recently ruined.
These are also 3D prints and a small file I purchased from Watcorp Designs. It was very cheap and is a nice model with options for an open cargo or enclosed troopback. I printed up both versions.

I painted these for use in a new Scifi game that has Earths first colony world. It seemed logical to assume that most equipment would be modular for ease of use and these powerful trucks would be a good platform as emergency vehicles like the bright green spaceport fire truck or the camouflaged military truck.

the fire truck has been stored outside and exposed to a lot of excitement, so fresh paint is not a plentiful item.

I used vallejo rust effect paint set to show rust and damage while the rust and ash powders were used to show the dirt and grime these hard working trucks have gathered

cannons on a fire truck!? in the modular nature of these trucks, the turret is probably a relatively easy swap of water cannon with more destructive ones possibly plug in turrets. I painted both trucks so the absence of the turrets isn't an issue as they will mostly be table dressing in my new game Blackout.
Blackout is a new scifi skirmish game I picked up at adepticon last year. Enemy Spotted Studios is an American company where a marine and army combat veterans made a scifi skirmish game where weapons are very lethal. a d10 system and if a troop is in the open bad things will happen. it is shoot and move and the system includes mechanics for models fighting in cover or using cover to "pie out" to engage targets.  It is fast paced and somewhat counter heavy with some other interesting game mechanics. They got my money easy as the models are wonderful, but also a combat vet company where the factory and shipping dept are entirely wounded warriors.
for$100 I got two forces(UN vsHarlow) tokens and a small rulebook.

The UN squad is led by a sniper and spotter and i matched their cloaks to the weathering powders i dusted the base and their legs with.

The UN force has bots powered by AI and in a slight horror, memory/ brain scans of deceased soldiers. All the brain scans and measurements used to track TBI(traumatic brain injury) in the game fluff I could be one of those bots. The bots are controlled by the two soldiers in the white UN helmets. in the game fluff they are women as women are pretty good in multitasking anyways and to be honest there isn't too much difference between soldiers and toddlers anyway! ;)

The ladies have recessed helmet lenses that i painted orange, the bots have a really nice similarity to the ones in Chappie which makes me think bigger things and fluff will be inbound for this game if they maintain success.

To oppose the UN forces are the Harlow mercenary company based out of South Africa. The troops are multicultural and all veterans. They were hired by the colonist workers whereas the UN represents earth and another merc group from Russia represents another faction( I think the industries involved on the colony as they are corporate security.

Harlow has three fireteams one led by the squad leader and the troops use some exo armor for increased mobility and strength

the bot operator is a woman and the troop on the right has a squad support weapon his exo suit helps him move with.

I do like how the three women are just smaller than the men and not overt in their femininity

Harlow bots are just a little different than the UN ones.

all of the figures have nice animation and I will be looking for the other sets this year as well as an expansion set and updated rules.
Besides turquoise, I have engaged in gluttonous use of rust effects. I dug out my powders i used in challenge past, but also the Vallejo rust effects set. I cannot use blogger at work, but I can watch youtube videos of painters and scale modelers and have seen lots of amazing works and taken notes.
I am still quite the novice at weathering, but I also know practice will make perfect. I painted the two fallout derelicts in turquoise as that color pairs well with the orange rust contrast. I also used white for the generic station wagon so i could just focus on the rust itself.

these are all freebie 3d prints.

I used a watery tan paint to dust to corners of the pickup as it has been collecting weathering scars and dust for some time. I also focused on chipping the paint and exposing lots of weathered metal beneath the paint.

the station wagon was peeled paint an exposed primer with the addition of rusted metal over all.

the fallout sedan used both blue and white and then NMM chrome to be weathered into a milky weathered chrome finish with rust bubbling beneath.

I also used all those wonderful fins and art deco shapes for where the sun blistered the paint away on the raised rounded surfaces
All of this playing with rust led to this, which is a gift for my father who just today went to the hospital.
He is a Rat-Rod aficionado and has been buying hot rod toy cars as he knows he can never own all the classics cars he wishes in 1:1 scale. I got him Gaslands for christmas as his toy car collection is a literal motorpool for the game. He may despair at the modified hot wheel cars, but these are outfitted with all the launchers, guns, ect that he could ever need for a game.

another skull....

two rat rods and a gasser to populate the game board i am building him. i am still painting the buildings and the board. I used a oil painting frame from a $10 painting from goodwill which I have found to be the perfect size for any skirmish game

the tail lights shine nice with the blue and i noted the gasser needed the drag chute painted so it got some paint as I took pictures

the war rig for scenarios and is just a paint up from a hot wheels rat rod car carrier.

a flame thrower to take care of tailgaters and also harpoons to make things interesting

so this is a healthy stack that can be set aside for a more secure place and cleared some room from the haphazardous stacking on my desk, and they wont be splattered by the orange paint.

so one warcry cultist for 5 points and two skulls
two hulking 6x6 for 40 points
seventeen 28mm scifi troops-85 points
3 rusted derelicts- 60 points
one semi and three rat rods for gaslands- 24 points and two skulls
rust and turquoise gluttony- 20
234 points new skull tally of 95 with 4 new skulls

From SteveA: Gaslands, KoW, Terrain (121 points)

Heya painting peoples!

I am chasing challenges with this post,  going for 3 Library Challenges as I wander thru the AHPC library seeking to slay the gray...and chip away the pile of unpainted shame...

Ever since ByronM got me hooked on the table top visuals that 3D printing can bestow upon a Kings of War  table scape where upon the minis were shrunk to 10mm scale so more minis fit within the units bases, thereby making the battlefield appear more epic....I have continued to add more units to my Army and craft more terrain for the KPW 10mm battle field.

A unit of 10mm Trolls will now bolster my KoW army building options, and and a dollar store Halloween Skeleton-snake decoration converted into an "ancient bones within the hill" terrain piece will now provide an obstacle for unit movement and block line of sight  for some upcoming KoW battles

To further complement my "scrubland"  terrain for 10mm KoW battles, I also crafted and painted up a couple hills and some smaller clusters of trees.

If you were pondering over ideas about how to create some variety of scatter terrain with some low-profile base that were both cheap and not a collection of square corners.. I can suggest trying an idea I found when viewing war game hobby yootoob videos - use old CDs as bases for some of your custom terrain pieces.

Hills, Trees and old bones are rather Nature-ish. . so these pieces I think will enable me to check out a "Nature" book from the AHPC challenge library.

Shifting creative gears and jumping across genres......

Music is Art, Art is Music...the creative forces cannot be stopped, nor can they be 'shushed' into quiet submission by beleaguered AHPC  librarians. .. Thereby the risen dead Bone Heads band rocked out in the AHPC Library and grabbed me an "Art" book from the shelf  .
The Bone Heads are 4 minis created by Ral Partha waaaay back in 1985 as part of there Imports line..  These guys are from the same blister pack of  2 skeletons on guitar, 1 Skeleton drummer, and 1 skeleton dood strapped into the drum kit to hold all the drums together.

The Gaslands car is a converted toy matchbox car - a $2 child's toy reimagined via the power of DYI mini-craft--  with some parts from NorthstarFigures 'Implements of Carnage' bitz sprues and a healthy application of trash bashing with plastic I saved from the recycling bin and reworked with files, knives and glue...

Also painted up for this week is a smattering of scatter terrain - piles of oil barrels and car tires that can used to pretty-up a Gaslands table, and can also to suggest where car lanes exist before collisions and weapons fire alters the flow of game traffic.... and I suppose these barrels an tires could also lend well to other games where there was still shooty-shooty-bang-bang, but less vehicular explosions ..

Considering all the  Terrain I painted for this post simply as a pile of terrain stuff to store between days when the dice are not rolling,  and imagining  if converted it all into a liquid, this assortment of terrain could fill a 6x6x6 inch cube cup..  Hmm ..  not a brew I'd drink nor a cup shape I'd recommend as best design to avoid chin drenching spills...  so I will leave these terrain items intact and ready for game, and give into my feeling there are 20 points of terrain here.

So here on my last proper Thor'sday post before the AHPC Library closing time.. I run a  few more zig-zags around the map so I may ring more challenge bells, and (elder thing powers be willing)  I will have a few more items painted and posted before the  Free-Fire days within the AHPS library  shoots out all the important structural parts of the library walls and it all comes crashing down in a heap of well painted minie among bookish ruination wrought of the next few chaotic days that will conclude this fun challenge.

121 Total Points

15 pts = x1    Gaslands Car, Vehicle 20mm
10 pts = x10  Trolls(KoW), Foot Figure, 10mm (10x1pt)
16 pts = x4   Undead Skeleton Metal Band, Foot Figure 20mm (4x4pts)
20 Pts = x1 cube, 6x6x6 inch of Terrain cube
Challenge Library
20 pts = S3 "Art" (Undead Metal)
20 pts = S3 "Nature" (scrubland terrain)
20 pts= S4 "DII"  (MatchBox toy car converted to Gaslands battle car)

TeemuL: Yes, old CD, a tried and tested method to have non-warped and rather strong terrain base. All those Grolier Multimedia Encyclopedias and installation CDs from the 90s have a new life! The second mixed of the day, let's see...

Terrain looks good, I like the snake skeleton and the skeleton band, too. I can imagine a skeleton band playing in the background of a Gaslands race. I guess all the terrain here could be used with Gaslands? The red car, nicely built, and probably very fast. Good job Steve! I hope you reach your target during the Free Fire time.

From PeterB - Into the final section with some more 2nd Ed 40K and friends - 145 Points

I've finally hit the last section of the library. As you can probably tell I am unnecessarily trying to cover every set of stacks. So first of all, Oversize books.

Having been playing some Gaslands, I felt I needed a vehicle with a bit more craziness. What can be crazier than a monster truck with oversized tyres. This beast is definitely going to be intimidating the other drivers.

The vehicle is originally a cutesy cartoon vehicle from a kids show and had a smiley face on the front. A no-prize to anyone that can name the character/show. Some additional bits added from the instruments of carnage sprue from North Star and it now looks the part.

Next up, we head to true crime.

In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, the job of investigating crimes and keeping the peace amongst the miserable masses falls to the local Adeptus Arbites. (At least from third edition 40K onwards anyway,) Amongst the underhives of the spire cities where gangs roam, they are mostly kept in check by these guys, keeping them from bothering the rich families of the upper levels. Quite obviously inspired by the Lawmakers from Mega City One in the pages of 2000AD, these Judges are also Jury and Executioner when required.

Then we head to cookery.

I struggled at first with this category, then a delve in my "to do" box and I found this Spartan taking a break on campaign. Not sure of the manufacturer unfortunately, it was a second hand gift from a friend amongst some other bits. I also pulled out some pots and fire left over from the Renada Viking House set and a bunny from Bad Squiddo Games. It looks to me like the soldier is wondering what he is going to cook that evening, then has inspiration when an inquisitive rabbit appears. Maybe he is about to cook up some carrot broth and will share the carrot tops with his new friend?

Next we head to self help.

As everyone knows, the keeping and caring of plants is also an excellent balm for the mind. I myself am not that green fingered but do enjoy planting the odd bulb here and there to make the garden look nice. Although after completing this project my fingers were indeed definitely a shade of goblin green.
Some of you old school 40K players may recognise these plants as inspired by all those magnificent battle reports from old White Dwarfs that have been the inspiration of my main project this year,

Yep, you too can have dangerous alien plant life as terrain on your wargame table by shoving some cocktail sticks into polystyrene balls. (Some are actually egg shaped, handy it being Easter soon.) The whole project took a lot longer than expected due to the layers of cheap craft paint taking an age to dry and needing multiple coats. The balls were attached together with very careful application of hot glue, too much and the polystyrene would just disintegrate. PVA glue however just didn't cut the mustard.

Scale shot for reference

The cacti are around 3 inch cube and there are six of them, so probably 15 points?

Finally, not for any location, just a little bonus for those of you that were missing the back banners and skulls. I present Zodgrod Wortsnagga. (That is a mouthful of a name.) Zodgrod is a slaver amongst the Ork society, preferring the company of Grots/Gretchin.

A member of my local club very kindly swapped some old school Orks with me for some Chaos Dwarfs, so I had to paint this chap up this week for my retro Ork army.

To the scores...

1 x 20mm vehicle = 15 points
5 x 28mm Arbites infantry. 5 x 5 = 25 points
1 x 28mm Spartan infantry = 5 points
4 x locations. 4 x 20 = 80 points
terrain points = 15 points
1 x 28m Ork infantry = 5 points

Total = 85 points 145 points

Sylvain: Nice completion of locations this week! Your "Big Foot" vehicle is hilariously tire-obese. Fantastic submission.
