From PaulSS - Moar Ork Boys (70 points)

Back from our Cornwall vacation on Saturday, I reckoned that I had time to crank out another unit of Ork Boyz before work on Monday so Sunday was spent doing ten more Orks.

After the less than impressive test of Contrast Paints over a very light grey basecoat, I went back to the earlier method of grey automotive primer, washed with VMC Black Grey and a heavy drybrush of VMC Pale Sand before I started.

Even though I'm not entirely sold on Contrast paints I do think that this way of priming gives a better result.

This time I built the heavy with a Rokkit Launcher and the Boss with just a Shoota.

Ten more 40mm figures will add 70 points to my total.

Napoleonic Duel Totalizer: 8 foot, 2 mounted (100pts)

Looking good Paul - just a reminder that there are still a couple weeks left, so you don't need posts for EVERY Orc you paint to be TODAY...

I love the rusted look on the Boss in this group. Inspiring stuff!

From RayR - Donnybrook - Last of the Mohicans (30 points)

Back in Challenge 8 in 2018 I painted up the Warlord Figures pack Last of the Mohicans here
Mainly to use as command figures for my Natives for King Philip's War/Bacon's Rebellion.

Around about the same time I bought the Redoubt Enterprises version of the same figures, Although there's no Magua, instead we have the ill fated Major Duncan Heyward.
These will also go into the Native Command box of doom. The ladies will go into the civilian box,
and poor Maj Heywood will go into the what the hell I'm I gonna do with you box!

I think I prefer these figures to the Warlord ones?

Bit blurry I know.
Cora Munro, Alice Munro, Chingachgook, Uncas

Alice, Chingachgook, Uncas, Hawkeye (in his famous, chasing after Magua pose)  and Maj Heyward

Originally I was just going to paint up Cora and Alice, just in case I needed them for Sarah Star ship, but before I knew it I'd cleaned up the pack and stuck them on sticks and lets face it, they're a pretty easy paint job.

This fine looking bunch of 6 x 25mm figures will earn me another 30 points, which leaves me just 9 points shy of Miles in 6th place.

Hi Ray - great brushwork as always, some interesting figures and a wonderful setting. Another 30 points for you! And I think we all have a "What The Hell Am I Gonna Do With You Box"...

From PaulSS - Ork Warboss and Deff Dread (39 points)

I'm on the last leg of the Ork Combat Patrol that I've been painting on my Cornwall vacation.

First up is the Ork Warboss in Mega Armour.

For this one I kept quite a bit of rust to match the rest of the force, but the bulk of the mega armour is done in contrast colour black with some edge highlighting done in VMC Pale Sand.

I really like how the 'uge choppa came out with rusty blades at both ends.

The final piece in the set is a Deff Dredd.

This is really where my choice of the rusty theme to the force really came in handy. The whole thing was basecoated in a 50:50 mix of VMC Gunmetal Grey and VMC Saddle Brown. Once dry it was washed with AP Strong Tone.

Once the wash was dried I painted the not-rusty areas in VMC Pale Sand and then washed that with VMC Black Grey before starting applying the areas of contrast paints.

The kit comes with plenty of extras, I glued in the top set of arms but left the lower arms unmounted. The default loadout is a pair of big shoota's seen in the above photos, but I've also painted up rokkits in the photos below.

This configuration includes shoota and extra combat arms, I also have burna options done.

This is the completed Combat Patrol. Warboss, two units of Boyz, Deffkopters and Deff Dredd.

The Ork Warboss is massive, even bigger than the Ork Boyz, so I'm claiming as a 54mm figure and a 20mm figure for the Grot gunner. The Deff Dredd will be a 40mm vehicle adding 39 points to my running total.

Great job Paul - wow, I love that Warboss in particular. I think I need to paint some 40k orks now. Well done.

From BruceR - Another group added to the 44th foot and their commander (45 points)

Time flies as it were.  Life is busy and the ability to roll some dice definitely gets in the way of painting.  I did get to trot out the members of the 44th foot I had finished last week and the current offering for this week.

Here are a couple of gratuitous shots of a FIW Sharp Practice 2 throw down we had this past weekend.  The Blues, 44th, and Highlanders are the result of the challenge.

44th Foot

Highlanders

New Jersey Blues alongside the 44th

I present the 2nd group of the 44th foot for my FIW Sharp Practice force.  A buddy is testing contrast paints and convinced me to do the same.  So, these fellows have three colors done with contrast.  The tunics and trousers.  The bread sack. The cloth leggings.  I did my standard black undercoat.  I used a zenithal highlight with a light sand color.  I used the Foundry 3 color method on the previous 8 and I'm not sure if its saves time or not.  Old dog new tricks is the theory.

These get me close to my goal.  I do have 8 more about 75% done, which will put me over.  They will have to wait for next week.

Again, these are Front Rank.  I love the different sculpts and the officer is wonderful. Hope you enjoy.

Stay safe folks and enjoy the hobby.

Lots of "Contrast" painting in the submissions today. All I know is that, whatever the method one uses, these Front Rank sculpts are just wonderful, and you continue to do some inspiring work. Well done Bruce.

From RayR - Donnybrook - Polish Haiduks (95 points)

Staying on the Vienna 1683 project for my next post.
I've been scrambling for info on the Polish Infantry that was sent as part of the relief force to Vienna.
It would have saved me a lot of fuss to include these in my venture to the centre of the Challenge Quadrant, but alas, I'd already started painting these and perhaps some other too?????

From what I've read so far it only looks like 2 units were sent?
And as per usual I don't know what 2 units and what they wore?

So I've gone for a generic blue coated faced red.
The 8 figures on the left are from Essex Miniatures,
The 8 on the right are from The Assault Group.
The 3 command figures are also from TAG.

I found the flag online here on Another Miniatures Painting Blog , this and other on the site are taken from The Stockholm Roll.
The “Stockholm Roll”, a 16 m long painting depicting the entry of the wedding procession of King Sigismund III Vasa into the city of Kraków in 1605, is now on show in the Royal Castle in Warsaw.

The Essex figures were a little smaller all round than the TAG figures, so I double based them, which bought them up to the same height, which made the fit in a little better. Not perfectly, but it'll do fine for me and the Rejects.
I will need to print the flag off again, with a better quality paper, as this one is rather
wishy washy in colour.

19 x 25mm figures @5pts each

95 points!
This should push me back up to 7th place, only 3 points ahead of Kerry!!
And 39 points behind Miles!

Great work Ray, I know the defenders of Vienna will appreciate any relief support they can get! Well done.

From PaulSS - Ork Deffkopters (45 points)

The Orks get some light air support from a trio of rusty death-trap Deffkopters.

Like the earlier Ork Boyz these three are from the Ork Combat Patrol set from GW.

To keep the theme, I wanted to do a dilapidated rust look on these so from a grey primer I added a wash of black and then applied a mix of VMC Gunmetal Grey and VMC Saddle Brown, then added successive patches with more and more VMC Clear Orange.

Once the rusting was done the areas to be 'painted' were blocked in with VMC Pale Sand and the rest painted with contrast paints. Again, lesson learned since, before doing the contrast paints the areas to be painted need a wash of black or very dark grey so that the contrast paints get shaded from below.

The Ork Flesh Contrast paint is worked up with VMC Flat Green and several highlights with progressively more VMC Iraqi Sand added.

The built in flying bases have bags of detail that can be picked out.

I think that these are probably best counted as a 40mm cavalryman adding 45 points to my total.

The Ork horde arises! Literally, in this case, I suppose...can't say I was ever crazy about these models myself, but you point out rightly that they do have loads of unique character, fitting ever so well with the Orks of the Warhammer 40k universe. And, I mean, they are kind of hilarious. Very nice work!

From PaulSS - Ork Boys (70 points)

Hot on the heels of the last batch of Ork Boys are another mob of green-skins painted on my Cornwall vacation.

In the previous post I mentioned that I was experimenting with Contrast Paints and the last batch had been painted over a "zenithal highlight" and had wanted to try some off of a plain light primer.

This time I used a primer of VMC Grey surface primer that is a very light coloured basecoat, I did not apply a wash at all and instead went straight for it with the Contrast Paints. I'll not be doing this method again, I was not that impressed with the previous result but think these came out much worse.

The Contrast browns especially came out much worse than over a gradient basecoat and are really patchy.

Ten more 40mm figures will add 70 points to my total.

Hello again Paul - very enjoyable to have this "petite deviation" through 40k amidst your historical painting projects. As to your ongoing experience with GW's "Contrast Paints", they remind me of something Homer Simpson once bragged to someone else about - "My boss always says everyone else has to work a lot harder when I'm around!". Nonetheless, I think these Boyz look more than fit for duty on the gaming table, and I've no doubt your talented brush experiments will find the highest and best use for these paints in your general overall approach!  70 points for your tally!

I also just love that you are painting Orks while on a vacation. I'll be saving this for the "Well, yes, honey, I paint a lot, but see, at least I don't..." file for use with key domestic audiences :)
