From JezT - Assorted Landsknechts - 25mm (60 points)

 Dear All,

Yikes only a few more posting weeks in the challenge to go! Glad to finish off a few odd Landsknechts for my Renaissance armies though. They are mainly Steel Fist Miniatures figures, some of which I wanted to blend into existing units to add a bit more variety.

Here are the figures before basing

This is the first time I have painted figures from Steel Fist and personally I found adding the heads and weapons a bit fiddly, but pleased with the end results. Here are 3 Landsknecht skirmish crossbow.

Next is a single Steel Fist Arquebusier - which added to an existing unit.

Then I have a Light Gun set - the figures are from Steel Fist but not sure about the actual gun. I painted these to be part of the French Army "Black Band" Landsknechts.

Here is another Steel Fist figure that I have added in as a replacement into a pike block to add more variety.

Steel Fist figure next to old Irregular Miniatures figure.

Finally a couple more Steel Fist Leader and Standard Bearer now added into a mainly old Hinchcliffe figure pike block.

New "Steel Fist" Leader on right with Standard Bearer behind

Close up on the Leader with impressive hat plume!

Next is another Standard Bearer but this time a TAG The Assault Group figure - this was a very nice Thirty Years war standard bearer figure that I wanted to act as a replacement. Originally the figure had a "Morion" helmet so did a heads swap.

TAG converted standard bearer

Finally is a unknown figure that picked up somewhere and although Landsknecht have used to beef up and strengthen a Swiss Halberdier unit. I painted in light blue and white as part of the Zurich contingent.

So in total it is 12 figures for 60 points.

Cheers Jez

Nice work here Jez! You've managed to blend figures from several different manufacturers together into a pretty cohesive unit, kudos for a good eye on that. I particularly like the stripey outfit on that dude from the Zurich contingent, very nice. Separate heads and weapons aren't my favourite things either and you've done a good job with 'em.

Sixty for your tally!

From Mike W: More 28mm Crossbowmen, Egyptian & Greek Undead and 15mm Epic AWI Infantry (166 Points)

Another varied mix of figures and subjects this week, with hopefully 2 more Squirrel points! New to this year's challenge are a group of Warlord Games Epic 15mm AWI Infantry, painted up as a Militia Unit, curently I have only finished two bases of these little guys but I have a few other Epic bases if I get round to them.

40 x American AWI Militiamen

A view of the left flank of these Militiamen

I made use of speed paints to do most of the heavy lifting on these guys, just a varied mix of jacket colours really. The flag was taken form the internet as a generic Militia standard.

And from the right flank whilst in column of march

Next is a return to the Egyptian Undead theme which sees me finally (after maybe about 15 years!) finishing a box of GW Khemri Charriots...

I have done at least one of the other two in previous challenges, however, as a kitbashing execise, this one has seen me replace one of the crewmen with a spare mummy figure, (leftover after from an earlier post this challenge).

Complted charriot with crewman and a mummy as it's important passenger.
Tw Horse skulls and two human skulls on this model.

The mummy can be seen better from this angle, I'm out of suitable grass tufts
for a desert so these will be added at a later date when I restock!

I have adjusted this mummy figure by replacing the head with a GW Tomb King's head and adding a rather large spear, again from the GW kit. Painting is basis the same procedures that I have previously detailed.

Close-up of eth crew compartment

And a departing rear shot

By way of a departure on the Undead front I am looking to put together an 'allied' unit of Greek Undead skeletons, armed with spears, the classic round hoplite shields and typical ancient Greek helmets with flamboyant crests.

Completed 5 x Greek Undead Infantry,
I'm cheekily claiming 5 Skull points for these guys, although the
skulls are completly enclosed by their Attic Helmets

Another angle, sorry the auto-focus on camera is messed up by the long spears!

I'm also looking to paint these as specifically Undead Spartans, so the colour theme for the unit will be Red & bone! The figures are Wargames Atlantic Skeleton Infantry  and shields, swords and helmets are 'liberated' from a Warlord Games box of Ancient Spartans.

Again the bases will be improved when I get more grass tufts

Size wise, these two figure sets are a good fit together, a little thinner and shorter than GW Tomb Kings, painting wise it is a similar recipe to the Egyptians above. Cream undercoat, GW Skeleton Horde speedpaint, dry-brushed a bone colour when dry and highlighted with near white.

A Close-up on two of the Greek Undead

Clothes (well rags),  Helmet crests are red, to fit in with the Spartan vibe, with black spear poles and  Brass spear blades, helmets & shields with a red 'V' transfers were used to finish them off.

The other three Greek Undead

Next is another 8 x 28mm Renaissance Crossbowmen, again I won't repeat my painting method as it is the same as noted last week!

Close-up of four of this week's completed batch.

Close up of the other 4 guys

Finally the whole of this week's batch!

SylvainR for DaveD: I admire the squirrel in you, hoping from one project to the next with equal grace and talent. I especially like the Spartan hoplites. The interwoven references to history and horror culture are quite unique. Oh, and I will add 1 point for the flag. Great job!

From Mike W - 28mm Daleks & Renaissance Crossbowmen (140 Points)

This week I have a rather strange mix of Sci-Fi and historical Renaissance Crossbowmen, all in 28mm, the crossbowmen are part of a larger batch that I hope to get completed by next week's post, for the time being here are 7 of the little guys.

The Dalek batch completed this week

I have described the painting proess for the daleks in earlier posts and these follow the same steps. I have gone for a retro silver and blue scheme for these guys, just because I like the colours. these may not be entirely 'historically' accurate but fit in with the vibe of other Dalek models finished by club members.

Close-up of some of the alien fiends....

Just for the record thats about 960 little blue hemispheres painted onto these guys! plus 40 little orange lights... Luckily I don't give up easily.

And another view!

The 20 x Daleks are for an upcoming club game set during the Dalek Civil War, thus the need for large numbers of the robotic menaces!

A slightly different angle

The specials! 'Brewed-up' Daleks at each end.
A Warlord Games miniature second left with truely retro bodywork
and a battle damaged Dalek second right.

As with previous year's when I have done Daleks, I have included a couple of casualties. This is the result of using bulk buys of cheap plastic dalek figures, where some of them inevitably end up arriving broken or with parts missing.

I have painted these up as regular Daleks but then used the whispy packing material used by Perry Miniatures (and others) and teased this out to represent smoke. Some yellow and orange paint plus daps of super glue keep this all in place and make a good representation of a Dalek 'Brewing-up!'!

One with rear damage, a Warlord Games mini

And one with frontal damage, from front cover of a magazine

The next group is of 7 x 28mm Renaissance Crossbowmen, this was a group of figures I obtained from eBay, they aaaare 3D printed figures which were sold en masse, at a discount, as they didn't have any heads. I supplied heads from Games Workshop, Wargames Atlantic and Warlord Games renaissance figures.

First seven of these 3D Crosbowmen

Another view

and the final view of the week

Once 'whole' the figures were undercoated in cream and then I used various speed pains and regular paints to dress them before a wash of watered down Dark Tone from Army Painter. Once dry they were varnished and bases flocke diin my normal manner. I have about a dozen more of these little guys to get completed over the next couple weeks.

From DaveD. Wow talk about tormenting yourself with dotty Daleks and then renaissance . That a fine output indeed . Good job on the kitbash on the figures . All that dotty work deserves a little reward so 140 it is .

JezT - 28mm Venetian Standard Bearer from TAG (10 points)

 Hi All

This is a simple single figure follow on from my last post, when I started down a "rabbit hole" of re-touching up and re-basing my old Gendarme figures. My new plan is using my very best Gendarme figures to intermix across different armies on individual sabot bases and have specific national army standard bearers.

This has proved quite tricky as I have been fiddling around with a lot of old lead that is now quite fragile. Cant believe that my old Wargames Foundry Gendarme figures are now over 35 years old!!

Anyway just presenting a single newly painted The Assault Group Spanish Genitor figure. I have  painted it up to be a Venetian standard bearer though - the flag is from Pete's flag.

Painted in red and white as Venetian colours

So just a simple single cavalry figure 10 points for the Challenge but very pleased with the final look of the re-touched up figures.

Cheers Jez

That's a good looking gendarme standard bearer there Jez! I like the idea of sabot basing, allowing you to use the same model in mass battle and skirmish games. Goof for you for getting paint on this model that's older than some painters here in the Challenge!

Ten points for you.

From JezT - 28mm Hungarian Hussars circa 1526 (91 points)

 Hi All

Exciting second post as this is creating a new Basic Impetus army option for me - Hungarian Renaissance, specifically aiming for basing this around the Battle of Mohacs 1526 when they took on the Ottomans and got totally wiped out.

My brother Matt is taking up with the Ottomans and bought figures from TAG (we might see some this Challenge - no pressure Matt but stop painting fantasy and get on with these). I get to be the mad impetuous Hungarians, but was quite pleased as I already had suitable Landsknecht type infantry and Men at Arms cavalry, so really just needed the specialist Hungarian Hussar light cavalry options.

After searching I eventually decided upon Warlord figures and bizarrely these are actually sold as Ottoman Turks.  I personally think they looked more European and critically for me they had the "signature" shooting bow pose, with curved shields and plums that I wanted. So I ended up with 3 packs and a total of 9 mounted to paint up to create 3 light cavalry bases.

First up is the Hussar light cavalry (in Basic Impetus parlance VBU 4/1), these can shoot and also charge in with lance.

Then I have two more bases of light cavalry bowmen, as these are more specifically skirmish cavalry shooting only (in Basic Impetus VBU 3/0), I decided on two figures per base and added on extra bows, so every model looks like an archer.

With the final two figures, I knew a definitely need a Hungarian themed commander figure.

There are weapons and a horse swap here - think the horse is an old Redoubt sculpt

As I got rid of the original sword, for accuracy felt needed to add in a new sword pommel

Think red and white are key Hungarian colours

Finally for the last figure I decided to base them on a sabot base as a standard bearer so they can mix with my existing Gendarmes and make a fully Hungarian Men At Arms unit.

Pleased with sabot base in action and now touching up more of my my older Gendarme figures.

So in total 9 mounted should be 90 points.

All the best Jez

Nice looking Hungarians here Jez! Good idea to sabot-base these models as it'll let you use them fir skirmish games as well. Good work on the flags and shield also - I'll chuck in another point for those. Ninety-one for your tally!

GrahamB - Schloss Aquarium (terrain) (7 points)

I have started this challenge with a refurb and tidy up of an eBay purchase to be used with my Italian Wars, Medieval and Renaissance collections.  The building started life as a fish tank model, hence the title.

The painting was completed by mainly dry brushing using various household paint match pots and some block painting to bring out the detail.  The castle is around 10 inches long by 6 inches wide by 8 inches tall and took around 2 hours to paint.

-------------

This is a great use of stuff from other sources (meaning other than a game or terrain store) to spice up your wargame table.  While you say it is mainly dry brushing work and then some simple painting, it looks really good, and a great use of a few hours.  I like that you added some brighter colours for the awnings and shingles to give the model some colour.  Good work Graham, keep it coming!
