From HayesW - Vietnam USMC Mortar Crew (10 Points)

My first post - thanks to a busy Christmas and start to 2026 schedule I decided I better knocking something out! So starting with this 28mm Gringo40 USMC 81mm mortar crew. Love the Gringo40 figures. My “plan” is to complete about 60 28mm Vietnam figures, filling in what I’m missing - crews, casualties, SF, etc. Excited to really get rolling!

2 x 28mm Figures = 10 Points

Nice first post here Hayes, the US war in Vietnam isn't a gaming subject you often see and I like these two models. The Gringo40 castings look quite nice and you've done a good job with them, they look like they're straight out of "Platoon" or "Full Metal Jacket". Well done and 10 points to open your tally.

From MikeD: 20mm North Vietnamese Army (132 pts)

My current gaming project is to run a campaign of Charlie Company with some friends. It's a rule set published in 1986 for miniature gaming in Viet Nam 1965-1972. It's got elements of a typical skirmish war game, but also some RPG elements. For example, the players represent squad leaders in a single platoon, with one playing the platoon command. Each squad leader may have different levels of experience, and accordingly better command stats. The North Vietnamese and Viet Cong forces are handled by the game-master/referee. The campaign will be a tour of duty, I'm thinking about 10 missions.

So I've been painting up a lot of VC and NVA. These are 20mm North Vietnamese Army figures from Britannia Miniatures. It's the second batch I've done for the project so it's mostly heavy weapons, officers, and a few vignettes. And a couple a water buffalo and pigs.

Group Shot

Small Mortar

RPG and Water Buffalo

Captured American Airman

Anti-Aircraft Gun

Tax Collector (I suppose it's healthy to feel a little ambivalence about this hobby sometimes)

Bigger Mortar w Radio man

Heavy MG crew backed up by pig

29 x 20mm foot @ 4pts each = 116

The past month has been crowded with a lot of life's 10000 joys and sorrows so it was touch and go if I would make this cut. I'm so glad I did.

***

Hi Mike - congratulations on "making the cut" - we all know that life (or "1-to-1 scale" as I sometimes lament) can throw a lot of curve balls, and at times our hobby must take a back seat. But you have persevered, and here you are with a fine opening entry!

Gaming a setting such as the Vietnam War(s) is appealing, but daunting! How, after all, does one find rules which can recreate on our gaming tables the elements that made that period, particular the era of direct US intervention, so specific and unique? Congrats on finding and adapting a clever set of rules for just such a purpose.

Your painting is fine, and wow, I fear for whatever patrol might come up against this heavily armed crew!

Note for scoring I added extra points to account for the multiple crew-served weapons int the submission.

Welcome to AHPC XV!

From PeteF: Charlie Don't Surf (on the Casting Couch) (25 points)

It's been a tough couple of weeks for hobbying - a family wedding took me back to the old country and I was assured there was not enough room in my luggage for paints. I've also had to put some time into a model I started before the challenge (see below) which I'll need for a tournament at the end of the month.

Nevertheless - I had time this weekend to get to work on Lt Colonel Kilgore.  The model is from the Wargames Illustrated Giants In Miniature series.  I was ordering from North Star as the challenge started and had to have this one for the movie theme.

Vietnam war gaming is a little too modern for me so he likely won't be seeing action in that conflict - maybe there'll be a place for him in a Death Fields game when Wargames Atlantic finally publish the rules.

He was a lot of fun to paint - but it brought to mind a lot of the movie - not just "that gasoline smell..." but Captain Willard's whole journey.

One 28mm foot figure for 5 points plus 20 for the Casting Couch. No skullz or squirrels.

Speaking of squirrels - this is Bill Kilgore next to a giant that distracted me this weekend.  I've been working on him since October - or was it August?  Nearly ready for the table but sadly not eligible for Challenge Points!

That's a great figure, Pete! As for the giant, it could count for the "Under Construction" studio, even if only for the studio bonus points.

These are brilliant Dennis, and enough of them to make the Vietnam war look like the Batle of Kursk. Welcome to Sundays. See you on the chat
Can you make sure you add you name to the title of the post and the labels, so we can find you when searching for the guilty

From BradS. Communism in the Stars [Caprica][Death Star][Skaro] 160 points

We've got a late flurry of posts from the Monday crew.  First up is this one from BradS

First I would like to say what an honor it is to be included in the Analog Painting Challenge. This is my first year here and I am a little overwhelmed. I thought I would be posting the first week of the challenge but getting painted done is a lot harder than I anticipated. That said, I am here posting my first efforts!

My goal this year is to focus on my 28mm Vietnam and 28 Cold War games so many of my entries will reflect this. I have a huge pile of NVA and Soviets to do.

I will start my journey on the planet of Caprica where a NVA .51 Gun Team lies in ambush for unsuspected Huey Helicopters.

The NVA figures are from the excellent Empress Miniatures Vietnam line. They have some great detail to them that make them a lot of fun to paint.

The .51 Gun Crew consists of 3 crew and in this case they are all female.

I also painted up two other NVA figures to act as security and ammo bearers for a total of six figures including the gun. For scoring I have 6 28mm figures at 5 points each for a total of 30 points. Add to that the Capricia bonus for a total of 50 points.

Next I am moving on to the Death Star : Of Questionable Design with my painted T-64. The T-64 is a perfect model for the planet as it invokes the technology superior Soviet design of the Cold War, yet it was never tested in battle. It was a dark threat to NATO during the late 60s and especially the 70s. I spent a lot of time on the T-64 painting and weathering. It really looks good in 28mm! Unfortunately I have at least 4 more to do!

This is a bobmack 3D model that I printed and painted.

The weathering is applied with oils and powders from the Ammo of MIG line of paints. It is a lot of fun to dirty up a vehicle like this.

For points I have 20 for a 28mm Vehicle plus 20 points for going to the Death Star make a total of 40 points for the T-64.

Next I am off to Skaro : Strange Doctors; Weird Robots with my 28mm Soviet Infantry. I have always thought of the Soviet Infantry as a kind of Robots. The idea of following strict doctrine and being part of a communist regime all add up to Robots in my head, perfect for the planet Skaro theme.

The figures are from Underfire Miniatures 28mm Soviet line. They are easy to paint and a look great when done. Which is good because my goal is to paint up a platoon of 28mm infantry.

Luckily they are not wearing any camouflage which makes it much simpler to paint. I wish I could say the same for the British Army of the Rhine infantry I painted up!

I created a unique paint stand to make it much easier to paint up a group of figures. Here is the Soviet Infantry in their painting stand.

I also painted up a BMP to go along with the Soviets. It really rounds out their firepower and mobility.

I think they really turned out nice. For points I am calculating 6 28mm Soviet Infantry at 5 points each for a total of 30 points plus a 28mm vehicle for 20 points. This totals 50 points plus the planet bonus of 20 points for a total of 70 points.

Point Summary

6 28mm NVA Infantry = 5pts each x 6 = 30 points

6 28mm Soviet Infantry = 5pts each x 6 = 30 points

1 28mm T-64 = 20 points

1 28mm BMP-1 = 20 points

Total 100 Points Base

Starting on Caprica: Doomed; Ambush (NVA Gun Team) 20 extra points

Going to Death Star: Hubris; Of Questionable Design (T-64) 20 extra points

Next going to Skaro: Strange Doctors; Weird Robots (Soviet Infantry) 20 extra points

Total: 160 Points

Well that is it for this week. You can look forward to more Vietnam figures and more Soviet figures in the near future.

Brad

Wow Brad terrific lost of Cold War kit and figures. I especially like the NVA gun in it's jungle emplacement. Next time around why not do one post per Challenge location instead of stuffing them all in one.

I will count the NVA post as 5 28mm figures @5 points plus 10 for the crew served weapon=35 points. I concur on the rest of your tallies. I've also added a Sarah's Choice label given the makeup of the 50cal team.
