From SebastianR: Hello sir, welcome to the [Gift Shop] (24 Points)

Finally, I can post the first think I painted, way back in January.

These are a friend's sci-fi buildings that I offered to paint for him as he wasn't sure how to approach them, and I wanted to practice with my airbrush.

They're a bizarre bit of manufacturing though. As far as we can tell they were designed and 3D printed, then cast in resin, which I suppose might be indicative of an old school manufacturer trying to incorporate more modern techniques, but it means that they have the worst features of both techniques, being made of resin but still showing the 3D print lines.

While this is a fascinating piece of design for manufacturing in action, it does mean no washes for me, just a jump into the unknown with a series of airbrush blends to try and liven up flat surfaces. I'm pretty happy with the results.

The buildings have already seen battle, twice, in my friends definitely not 6 Days War IN SPACE hybrid wargame/RPG.

Points wise, I made impromptu notes on what they measured piled together but I appear to have thrown away the card on which I made said notes, and all I have is this photo suggesting that one axis was ~7".

Assuming it's roughly 7*3*2 that's about a fifth of a 6" cube, giving my 4 points, and with 20 points for the challenge I can rake in 24 points

All that remains if for me to clear up my little mistake with oversized books and the way is open to Rare Books, for only the second time in my time with the challenge!

These buildings look really cool - are they 15mm scale? Or even 6mm? In any case they do look really good and are a suitable entry for the Gift Shop.

24 points for you, and looking forward to seeing a BIG MODEL in the Oversized Books stack!

From ChrisW: 15mm Mercenary APCs and support vehicles [144 points]

So these are the vehicles that had the priming issue last week. After much elbow work, and cleaning I was able to restore them and have the primer stick to them. They all came from Alternative armies. The plan is to have units of three APCs supported by a gatling gun anti infantry APC and an anti tank support APC. The three missile vehicles will be partnered up with the command vehicle from last weeks post.

Nine 'taxi' APCs

Three gatling gun armed APCs

Three Anti tank APCs

Three missile launcher vehicles

 So the totals

  • 144 points for 18x 15mm vehicles (8 points each)

  So, no squirrels this post

I can only imagine the size of the vehicle park in your display cabinets Chris... this is some impressive production. I really like how you've done the camo on these vehicles and the hover skirts look really good too. You are certainly set for some big 15mm SF games! Good work!

144 points added to your tally!

From SebastianR: Rats! [Nature] (104 Points)

And our ghostly cart ride takes us to the the nature part of the library where we are surrounded by one of nature's greatest adapters, the rat, flowing into houses and granaries and scurrying up from beneath in an unending tide, to harry desperate peasants, and unfortunate adventurers in an unending swarm.

These figures are one part citadel Mordheim dire rats, and one part alternative armies rats.

The single based minis will be used for this year's Mordheim skaven warband and probably Pathfinder at some point. The multi based miniatures? Who knows. I had excess rats and wanted to paint them all.

Getting the plank texture was something of a saga. Turns out Element Games is perfectly happy to sell you something that they do not have in stock, and don't know when they will have in stock either.

My experiments with texturing milliput have borne fruit, but I definitely could have done a better job. Firmer, more consistent texture is required. I'll know when I come to make bases for the actual skaven.

While these are 28mm rats, they're much closer to 15mm figures; cavalry specifically, so I'm going to cost them at 4pts each, Dallas permitting.

That's 21 rats at 4 pts each for 84pts and 1 location at 20 points for 104pts.

There's no such thing as too many rats, and I say this as a former player of a Skaven army in WHFB and a Skaven Blood Bowl team. These little rodents look superb and I really like the textured bases, they look great.

I'll allow your math and allocate 104 points.

From ChrisW 15mm Sci-fi New Anglian Confederation (NAC) [176 points]

Surprise, surprise more 15mm sci-fi figures!(rarely have I been this fixated on any one subject) This time some NAC vehicles, mostly Ground Zero Games miniatures but also some Brigade models and two Bradley Miniatures armoured cars.

They started off primed in Vallejo brown leather rattle can, which came out kind of orange/brown, then they sat on a shelf while I awaited inspiration. I decided to go for progressively lighter shades aiming at a desert yellow end shade. It was only after I had been painting them a while that I realized that I was painting them as if they were WWII Afrika Corps...go figure.

So no stripes on these, basically just shades of yellow. I did experiment with a blotch style of  green/brown camo but I did not like the look of it and I lacked confidence that it would work out. So I decided to dirty up the wheels and lower parts of the vehicles to try an add a bit of extra something to the overall appearance. Speaking of wheels, 136 wheels seemed to me to be too many wheels, the initial excitement wore off rather quickly.

Paladin HEL armed tanks

Phalanx APC

Medium APCs

Recon light vehicles

Heavy tanks (Brigade Models)

Two Armoured cars (Bradley miniatures)

This AC comes with a choice of interchangeable turrets

AA and Slam artillery (the Slam is by Brigade Models)

So the totals

  • 176 points for 22x 15mm vehicles (8 points each)

Squirrels this post +1

Squirrels to date [8]

  • Hammers Slammers
  • Ikwen alien infantry
  • Hanuman (Alien) vehicles
  • New Swabian league armoured vehicles
  • Rats
  • Scarabs
  • Mercenary Sci-fi vehicle
  • NAC Sci-fi vehicles
Chris, your production and level of quality here is impressive! You can't go far wrong with emulating the DAK colourway and these vehicles look very cool. All they need are little palm tree decals. Excellent work and another good points haul for you.

From PaulSS - French 6-pounders - 60pts

A diversion from the American Civil War painting this week and a foray back to the Napoleonics collection with a couple of French 6-pounder cannons added to the Hundred Days forces.

I usually represent my batteries with three guns, but an audit of the collection last year showed I had a spare French gun painted, so these two were purchased to make up to battery strength.

Both models are the Perry Miniatures Foot Artillery priming 6 pounder (greatcoats) and are lovely characterful sculpts.

A couple of close-up shots of each gun.

I made bit off a boo-boo when sticking this one together and the right wheel is very pigeon-toed, fortunately not obvious in these camera angles.

A nice little foray back to Napoleonics, but a leap forwards 50-years and now back to painting troops for the American Civil War ready for next weeks update.

Two 28mm guns and eight crewmen will add another 60 points to my total.

Some more great painting from you here Paul! I like your rationale for buying two more guns for your French, makes perfect sense to me. The greatcoats look cool and the groundwork, as ever, is fantastic. As good as your ACW stuff is I like the Napoleonics just as much!

60 points for you!
