From Millsy: Warcry Wildercorps Hunters (90 points)

G'day All,

This is a commission job for a mate. Ordinarily I don't do painting commissions but this joker is a half decent bloke and I've wanted to paint some of these for a while now. The infantry and four of the puppers are from the plastic box set.

They're absolutely beautiful miniatures, full of flavour and movement, and packed with extra kit and detail. That's both a plus and a minus. They're amazing to look at and a bit of a trial to paint. The muted blue/yellow colour choice was my mate's decision. It looks great but it's not how I see hunters, but makes no difference in game so it is what it is.

The rest of the doggos are resin 3D prints my mate purchased to allow him to field a full list. Extra doggos are needed because the Evil Empire deliberately leave you short of playing a full roster in pretty much every box set for every game to try to make you buy extra kit. To be fair plenty of other companies do this too but they invented the idea and have it refined to a fine art.

Very nice brushwork as usual Millsy. I had not even recalled that "Warcry" was a GW product until you mentioned the packaging strategy - well done that 3D prints have been able to help fill the gap. 

As ever, it is the 1-to-1 scale dogs that will steal any show, however! Well met, Summer and Al!

From ByronM - AOS Ogor Mawtribe Gluttons (84 Points)

Over the last few years a friend of mine has been de-cluttering since he moved way out in the middle of nowhere and that has been an amazing windfall for my pile of shame.  I think I just finished getting the last of his vast collection this fall, and it spanned over 30 tote boxes of stuff!  Most of it GW stuff!  He only gets to play games when visiting me, so it's now all here to be worked on and played with. Oh, and it has caused lots of in house fighting as my sons Riley and Quinn try to claim various parts of the collection for their own.

Anyway, part of that collect was a huge pile of Warhammer Fantasy era Ogres, or Ogors as they now call them so that the GW legal department can ensure that the IP they stole from past companies and authors can now not be re-stolen from them. Man do I hate modern day GW...

 Both of my sons have been bugging me to play Age of Sigmar with them, and while I consider the rules complete SH*T it is a chance to play games with them, sooooo....  I went looking for bits to make as small an army as possible so that I don't have to paint a whole ton of stuff for a game I don't really care about, and I decided on the Ogres, er I mean: Ogors.  The whole 2000 point army will consist of just 24 models, so that's a bonus!

This week I focused on getting the first of two units in the army together (yeah, really just two units and then a bunch on monsters and characters.... what a dumb game), a reinforced unit of 12 Ogor Mawtribe Gluttons.  Most of these were already assembled and primed, some even had some colour on them here and there (that I just painted over!) so while there are some mould lines still on them, I was not about to go and clean them up and re-prime them so they got left as they were.  Do you start to understand my level of caring for this project? :-D. 

These models have been painted to simply be done and table ready, they are nothing special, and are pretty rough.  I think they look good enough to be on a table at a store event though, so stopped at that.  I will probably put more effort into the characters and monsters, but the base infantry can suck it! 

I tried to have several different shades of flesh on them so that they do not all look the same, I also did them with various different colours of pants and boots since I really doubt the Ogors have an army tailor and uniform standard.  

For basing I am going for a dry fall / early winter Steppe look with scrub and sand base, and then patches of snow.  However, despite having at least 3 different types of snow flock, I can not find ANY of them (we moved 2 years ago and I do not believe I have used them since and they are probably still buried in my storage trailer someplace) so I had to drop the snow part of the base until I can either find my snow flock or much more likely order in some more.  I will make sure I post an updated picture when I do get the bases fully done with other Ogors in the near future.

From looking through the painting challenges history I have found that people have been claiming ogres and trolls as 40mm infantry models so I will do the same here for consistency.  So these should give me a total of 12 x 7 points = 84 points.   

These look great Byron and I applaud your efforts on several levels - getting models painted for a game and recycling someone else's giveaways! Seriously though the models look pretty cool. Like you I was "out of the modern GW game" some time ago but the price looked to be right for these models and you've done a great job in painting them! 84 points for your account.

From QuinnM: Droggz Da Sunchompa for The Ambitious (35 points)

 This week I worked on a single model and I spent almost the entire week painting it. As goblins are my favorite faction, some new goblin models came out for Age of Sigmar recently including my submission today: the leader of the Gitmob Droggz Da Sunchompa 

He fit perfectly for the theme of ambition as what is more ambitious then a single goblin that is trying to kill the Sun.( Also I wanted to paint this model up and put it for the competition because damn is it a good model).

He is also a big boy here he is next to a night goblin for scale 

so for points 

1 28mm Rider@ 10 points 

The Ambitious @ 20 points 

 

Sylvain: Looking at your "rider" I can understand how you spent a week painting it. There are lots of little details that are slowly revealed as one gazes at the model, like the scars or the pattern on the shield. For this exceptional work, I will throw in 5 extra points. Great job!

From Millsy: Kruleboyz Killaboss on Great Gnashtoof (45 points)

G'day All,

Phew! 11 hours and some change to paint one bloke and his dog. Seems excessive when you say it like that but once you see the thing it starts to make some sense...

This is the final unit required to complete my age of Sigmar Kruleboyz Spearhead and very pleased I am indeed to have him painted and based. Fiendishly detailed and chock full of hard to reach nooks and crannies, he really tested my patience, brush technique and desire to have him painted to a matching (or higher) standard than his minions.

Anyway, I'll let the pictures do the talking in this instance. Enjoy!

Points-wise this is a hard one. I've gone with the "it is what it is" option as a single mounted 40mm figure and will let Sarah decide if it merits anything beyond that...

In full disclosure, I absolutely despise 'Age of Sigmar', but I absolutely love this. 

Beautiful work Millsy. In looking at all the detail crammed into this pair I can only imagine the time and patience in doing it justice which you've done in flying colours. I particularly like the barding and armour of the two, especially the bone yelllow sections. Lovely brushwork that.

'Who's a good boy?! Get him a treat, will ya.'  I'm going to use my substitute minion powers expansively and give you another 10 points for this. Excellent work Millsy!

From Millsy: Age of Sigmar Kruleboyz (163 points)

G'day All,

So I couldn't paint any more black without a break. Instead I switched tack and although I am still painting fantasy miniatures I've changed game and faction.

This week I've been painting Orruk Kruleboyz for Age of Sigmar. With the exception of the leader on big beasty this is the Age of Sigmar Spearhead force plus Da Kunnin' Krew for Warhammer Underworlds. I have a bunch more to paint and based on how much I enjoyed these the next batch will be along quick smart...

Killaboss with Stab-grot and Murknob with Belcha-banna

Whoever names these things smokes some great stuff. Whoever sculpts these things is a genius. And whoever designs the sprues and does the instructions should be incarcerated. The two big lads are enormous and top out over 40mm, towering over Grot and their Orruk minions.

Man-skewer Boltboyz

Three chonky Orruks with shootaz ready to skewer some man-things and spit roast them for dinner.

Beast-skewer Killbow

I think the guy who names these things might also be the guy who does the song titles for The Offspring. I might even rename my Killaboss to "Killboy Powerhead". This thing was a bugger to paint even in sub assemblies but it looks the business.

Gutrippaz

I mistyped this as "butrippaz" initially and was tempted to leave it. I have two more units of these, one more with stickaz and one with choppaz.

Da Kunnin' Krew

It's fair to say I've become obsessed with Orruks and am buying up everything there is in the range. Didn't need these for AoS but they will make a great Warcry warband with a couple of Butrippaz Gutrippaz thrown in. Two more 40mm beasts and a bunch of mooks for da sneaky stuff.

Points for the Point God!

Oh wow!

 I have no idea what exactly I'm looking at but the minis are super cool and the paint job is fab! I'm a big fan of purples&greens so I'm predisposed to like these scary bad boyz and their nasty weaponry.

Congrats on passing through another level of hell ... what will see next?

From ThomasG: Ironjawz with Fancy Masks - 30pts

Finally the string of birthdays and school holidays is at an end! I can finally get back to some hobby time for me, and I've started with a set of models I received for my birthday. These guys are Orruk Weirdbrute Wrekkaz, and continue in the theme of very large models, even within the range. I've stuck to my army theme of dark reddish skin tones and beaten metal surfaces, however these guys got an orange detail on the trousers, for no other reason than I had a few new orange paints to test out.

     

     The three figures are all armed with wrecking ball/morning star style weapons, looking truly vicious, I was inspired to give them that extra detail, and added a blood effect to the heads of each weapon, as well as the hands and some of the chains. 

     I added a spot colour of blue/grey to add some contrast to all the warm tones across the models, and feel it definitely helped. It is hard as these models have very few materials to work with, and sticking to a limited palette can make them seem lifeless. But the punch of cold blue, and a muted brown base with added slime appears to go a long way. 

     Although it was hard to add much in the way of texture, I tried some simple rust effects to the weapon chains so they were still seperate from the armour panels. The blood effect (seen more clearly below) is something I usually avoid, mostly as it can feel a bit tacky, but being a bit more chaotic with the application gave that savage look I wanted. 

   Yuk!

     And here we are, at the end of a brief run through these guys. Brutal, savage and bringing my growing army up to 6 models. There's 15 more infantry to come, and then one ginormous character and boar to add to his force and it will be done for now. 

     I had a chat with Martijn as to how to score these guys as they're almost twice the size of a 28mm figure, and we agreed to treat them as the equivalent of a cavalry sized figure, to which he very kindly allowed me to score them at 10pts each. 

Points:

3 x "Oversized 28mm" = 30pts

Total = 30pts

     Hopefully I'll be able to get more work done soon as the fundamental painting of these guys is incredibly easy, but in that lies the trouble of not wanting to fight the grind. But, hey, that's why this is a challenge!

Wow, Tom, what fantastic figures and what absolutely fabulous brushwork! You have really brought these Ironjawz to life with your painting, and the use of colours, shades and highlights and the attention to detail is astounding. I think your experiment with the orange went very well, and the flesh and the metals are very convincing. An excellent job on these brutes and 30 well-deserved points for you!

From ThomasG: Zoggrok Anvilsmasha [Fantasy](25 points)

Time to ring in the bells on my second leader to this fledgling army for the fantasy game, Age of Sigmar, this one being a hero character, usually going by the name of Zoggrok Anvilsmasha. He uses the collective power of the Orruks around him to imbue magic strength to the weapons of his "ardboyz".

Again, I chose to use the Uruk Hai as influence for both the skin and main armour panels, however as this chap is a magical blacksmith, I once more dipped in to the world of Asterix the Gaul for inspiration.

In Asterix, his village has a blacksmith by the name of Fulliautomatix. He has bright red trousers and a brown leather apron, so naturally they helped bring a bit of colour to this dark palette. 

I found myself really pushing my use of textures on the apron to give the impression of worn leather, and although I feel I could do more, at this point in the learning process I feel proud of what I achieved. This model is particularly large and really sets an imposing presence on the tabletop, soon to be joined by many more. 

A short but sweet week from me this time, as I have spent most of my week preparing and attending my final assessment to become a qualified archery coach, which I'm very proud to say I passed with flying colours! Next week I will have a special squiggly beast and hopefully some green skinned orks from the far future for you all.

Tom, this figure is excellent! I do have a very weak spot for Asterix, so the reference to Fulliautomatix sits very well with me indeed, but even aside from that nod, you have done an absolutely splendid job on him. That apron looks utterly fantastic and your pride is more than justified.

Now you say this a large figure, although you do not say how large, but I somehow feel that 5 points for this magnificent piece would be unnecessarily thrifty. I will score it at 10 points; either consider it equivalent to a 28mm cavalry figure or as 5 well-deserved bonus points. 30 points total.

To make us even happier, next time a  map would be awesome!
