From DavidB: Something epic (248 points)

These have been a long time coming. Space Marine and Adeptus Titanicus are the first Games Workshop games I ever played. I had lots of games with these very pieces in the 80's and early 90's both games were first editions and although the boxes are relatively intact and tokens are used, it still sees the gaming table every now again. I'd like to add to what I have, but with the game OOP, collectors have driven prices up sharply. It's also take a long time to paint just this portion as the figures have always seemed more board game than wargame and I'm not comfortable painting such tiny forces.

Thanks must be given to Sylvain who sent me these land speeders in Dark Angel colours. They have been lonely without the entourage behind them.

Simple clunky Titan models and my introduction to Games Workshop fluff. It took a bit of work to liven up these old warriors, but at least now it'll be quite a bit of fun to jump back in Horus Heresy combat with models in appropriate colours.

To add detail I used Ad-mech and spare transfers from the bit box. Since Titans are Ad-mech hot rods, I  coated them with varnish over the armour to hold the decals in place.

The dark Angel force is in transition from the 30k black and red to 40k dark green while I imagine this particular titan group is slowly accumulating personal heraldry for their machines.

My kids love the old card and foam buildings, I'll have to see about sprucing them up at some point too.

The confusion and betrayal of the Horus Heresy is tragic and compelling reading. I like the stories of Ad-mech infantry setting upon marines just because of miscommunication and distrust due to traitor acts of sabotage and subterfuge. Although a smaller force, the sudden strikes, ambushes, and infiltration of cults like the dark mechanicus really evened up the sides and still provides great stories to read. One of my daughters has been reading on the Heresy(when she should be doing school work!)

I'm uncertain on the titans so.... maybe 5 points each for 15?

160 tiny marines for 80 points

143 points

some more tally for the squirrel and the evil empire, but back to larger scale forces before eye strain gets me!

Just in case the Black Squadron didn't give you the message, we now have the actual demolition troopers themselves! Well, maybe not. But still impressive anyway.

Consulting through the Book of Analogue, Chapter 2019, verse 16JAN, the Snowlord hath decreed that an Adepticus Titanicus is the equivalent of two 28mm vehicles, which puts them at 40 points apiece. 

All told, that gives you a planet-demolishing 248 points, or more points that I get in most challenges!

From GregB: 40k Vostroyan Heavy Weapons Section (60 points)

Vostroyan lascannon teams for GW's Warhammer 40k setting.

Back to 40k again for this Painting Challenge submission.  Here are some more "Vostroyan" troops, members of the Imperial Guard in GW's "Warhammer 40k" game.  This is a heavy weapons section - a trio of two-man teams equipped with Lascannons, the heaviest of the approximately-man-portable heavy weapons in the 40k setting.

Great sculpts from GW, back in the days when they made proper, metal castings.

I had an earlier submission featuring an officer and some special weapon troopers. As with that lot, these figures have also been sitting in my hoard for several years. It is a great feeling to get some paint on them, and continue to build my small collection of Vostroyan troops into something large enough to stand on its own on the table.

Spotting a target down range...in reality, these things will be doing a lot of point-blank shooting.  It is 40k, after all.

Imperial Guard forces count on their heavy weapons to have any chance on the gaming table in the face of the assorted alien and heretic nightmares which plague the universe of the grim and dark far-future, so these lascannons will be critical.  They can knock out vehicles, monsters and heavily-armoured infantry, and the three teams firing together helps to compensate for the fact that, when I am rolling the dice, at least two will miss with every volley...

Seems...not so safe to kneel that close to a heavy weapon? Oh well...

Of course they continue to feature all sorts of baroque whackiness all of the Vostroyan sculpts have - re-breathers, spooky goggles, colpacks etc.  Some of it even features on the lascannons - note the silly embossed "V" on the weapons.  It's a touch nutty, and I really like it.

The dismal Winnipeg winter can be seen in the blurry distance from my kitchen...not sure what these troopers would make of it...

There are six infantry models and three crew-served weapons in this submission.  I think that works out to 60 points in theory, but a Lascannon is not that big of a "crew-served weapon", so I am thinking they should score at five points each - in all, 45 more points toward my overall points target and my mediocre showing in the "Evil Empire" side duel.

Oh, finally, some not French. 

You've done your usual thorough job on the Vostroyans, especially the white greatcoats and the highlighting on the colpacks. Very nice looking troops.

As for the lascannons not being "that big" they look on par with some smaller artillery pieces. Plus there's quite a bit of detail. So, who are we to dispute the Spreadsheet of DOOM when it says 60 points?  

From GregB: Epic 30k Super Heavy Armour (18 Points)

"Super-heavy" tanks in 6mm from the 14th Space Marine Legion, the Death Guard

Back to some Horus Heresy and 30k material for this week with my first submission - specifically Epic 30k, the 6mm-sized-mass-battle version of GW's science fiction games.  There are two "Fellblade" class tanks and one "Falchion" class tank, and they are all painted in the markings of the 14th Space Marine Legion, known as (charmingly) the "Death Guard".

Lovely little private sculpts - in metal, with great, crisp details.

The Horus Heresy setting features lots and lots of tanks. Lots! Yay! This small scale is ideal for deploying masses of tanks, so playing 30k in "Epic" is great fun! While models exist for these beasts in the regular 28mm size of the game, getting more than one or two of those beasts on to a regular-sized table is hard.  On the other hand, in the small size of the models in the "Epic" game lets you put whole squadrons of these monsters on a regular table, and do so with comfort!

I had painted a fair amount of Epic 30k material back in a different Painting Challenge...I think edition VII? Anyway, good to have some sci-fi breaking up all the historical stuff!

I love the silhouette of the Fellblade...just a bonkers tank.

As with my 10mm FPW figures last week, these are models have been painted "on the side of the table" - something I work on while other projects dry, add a layer here, colour there, and then they finish at some point.  This sort of semi-scattered painting approach may slow me down a bit overall, but I find it makes the painting more fun in general.  Particularly when the "side of the table" thing is very different in either subject or scale, it adds some variety overall.

Byron already has a great a collection of Death Guard Space Marines for Epic 30k (and in 28mm too), so these are somewhat superfluous in terms of our overall group...but I do like the Death Guard, already had a few infantry and vehicles painted myself. I already had these specific models too, with their Legion iconography was sculpted into the doors, so I thought I would paint them up as intended.  I mean - how could a game where the Death Guard deploy three super-heavy tanks be better? Why, one with six super-heavy tanks, of course! I'm hoping Byron's troops won't mind the company...

The Fellblade, with its bonkers twin-main guns, and demolisher cannon, AND heavy bolters, AND quad laser weapons (on BOTH sponsons!) is one of the most heavily-armed vehicles to be found in the 30k setting (or, at least, thing that it is still a vehicle, as opposed to Titans).  It's bananas, and they are a lot of fun in Epic 30k.  Even if you are commanding just two of them in an Epic 30k game, when it is your turn to shoot...you are doing a LOT of shooting. Fun!

The Falchion - super-heavy-tank-destroyer extraordinaire!

If the Fellbalde is meant to be a kind of "general" battle tank, the Falchion has a much more specific purpose - it is a warped 30k-vision of a super-heavy-tank-destroyer, featuring a massive energy weapon (and, you know, still with the quad laser cannons on the sponsons, one presumes to let the crew have some sport while the big weapon re-charges).  The Falchion tries to knock out enemy super-heavy tanks, and also has sufficient firepower to severely damage or even knock out Titans.  Just look at that bonkers weapon! Oh man, I love the 30k setting...the very best, crazy sci-fi designs, brilliantly done.

These are not technically-speaking, GW models - because GW has, generally speaking, been a pack of sh*t heels when it comes to the management of the Epic game (and their other specialist games) - so these are private sculpts.  But I am hoping my fellow "Evil Empire" side-duellists would allow this GW-inspired material to count towards my duel score...

In terms of scoring, these models are 6mm-sized tanks - but they are quite big, so I am hoping perhaps they could count for two-tanks-each, giving a total of 18 points? Robert will figure it out.

Woah! It's like the misbegotten hellchild of a Mark V and a A7v, but turreted like the tank from Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. All very WTF, man. 

However, the stark white works, and works very well on these. A very simple scheme, well executed. Especially since white paint seems to be my bete noir right now.

However, scoring was difficult. GregB neglected to put anything to give me an idea of the scale of the thing. So, when the Bosun is done with PeteF, we clearly have to bring another miscreant before the Minion's Mast. From my Google search, these things were more like 4x the volume of a 6mm Rhino-equivalent. So, I scored them as 15mm vehicles.

Bosun, for his sins, give GregB a hearty twenty four points. And may the Snowlord have mercy on his brushes.
