From ByronM - AOS Ogor Mawtribe Gluttons (84 Points)

Over the last few years a friend of mine has been de-cluttering since he moved way out in the middle of nowhere and that has been an amazing windfall for my pile of shame.  I think I just finished getting the last of his vast collection this fall, and it spanned over 30 tote boxes of stuff!  Most of it GW stuff!  He only gets to play games when visiting me, so it's now all here to be worked on and played with. Oh, and it has caused lots of in house fighting as my sons Riley and Quinn try to claim various parts of the collection for their own.

Anyway, part of that collect was a huge pile of Warhammer Fantasy era Ogres, or Ogors as they now call them so that the GW legal department can ensure that the IP they stole from past companies and authors can now not be re-stolen from them. Man do I hate modern day GW...

Both of my sons have been bugging me to play Age of Sigmar with them, and while I consider the rules complete SH*T it is a chance to play games with them, sooooo....  I went looking for bits to make as small an army as possible so that I don't have to paint a whole ton of stuff for a game I don't really care about, and I decided on the Ogres, er I mean: Ogors.  The whole 2000 point army will consist of just 24 models, so that's a bonus!

This week I focused on getting the first of two units in the army together (yeah, really just two units and then a bunch on monsters and characters.... what a dumb game), a reinforced unit of 12 Ogor Mawtribe Gluttons.  Most of these were already assembled and primed, some even had some colour on them here and there (that I just painted over!) so while there are some mould lines still on them, I was not about to go and clean them up and re-prime them so they got left as they were.  Do you start to understand my level of caring for this project? :-D.

These models have been painted to simply be done and table ready, they are nothing special, and are pretty rough.  I think they look good enough to be on a table at a store event though, so stopped at that.  I will probably put more effort into the characters and monsters, but the base infantry can suck it!

I tried to have several different shades of flesh on them so that they do not all look the same, I also did them with various different colours of pants and boots since I really doubt the Ogors have an army tailor and uniform standard.

For basing I am going for a dry fall / early winter Steppe look with scrub and sand base, and then patches of snow.  However, despite having at least 3 different types of snow flock, I can not find ANY of them (we moved 2 years ago and I do not believe I have used them since and they are probably still buried in my storage trailer someplace) so I had to drop the snow part of the base until I can either find my snow flock or much more likely order in some more.  I will make sure I post an updated picture when I do get the bases fully done with other Ogors in the near future.

From looking through the painting challenges history I have found that people have been claiming ogres and trolls as 40mm infantry models so I will do the same here for consistency.  So these should give me a total of 12 x 7 points = 84 points.

These look great Byron and I applaud your efforts on several levels - getting models painted for a game and recycling someone else's giveaways! Seriously though the models look pretty cool. Like you I was "out of the modern GW game" some time ago but the price looked to be right for these models and you've done a great job in painting them! 84 points for your account.

From PeterB - Worms!!! (and ogres) (365 points)

Bit of an unusual one today.

Last year Mantic games did a kickstarter for Worms the boardgame. For those that do not immediately recognise thus, it is from a video game franchise where players use teams of worms to fire rockets and other weapons at each other in a side on view of a landscape. A bit like those games we played on BBC micros back in the 80s for learning about angles and trajectories. (I think we were being trained up as child Mortar teams in case World War three ever happened.)

The Collectors edition promised more worm models than the retail version, so I bit the bullet and signed up. The only issue was these worms all came in grey plastic.

Well, I definitely couldn't have that, these little dudes were begging to have some paint slapped on them.

The game takes place on a set of hex shaped cardboard pieces that are laid out in a  random pattern and yes, sections do dissappear if they take too  much damage and any worms at that location fall in the sea.

The much loved mines, exploding barrels and weapons drops are included as well as banana bombs and exploding sheep.

The models themselves bear no resemblance to what they are armed with in the game, cards are drawn to select weapons.

Each team have a set of coloured surrounds that the worms clip into to identify their own pieces. This does mean any paint on the base edge is likely to be scraped off, so I have not made any attention to the edges.

I love the various characters, there is a lot of variety. There are some repeats, but not a huge amount. A couple of the classic weapons number in up to six.

This special edition has enough for six players which means lots of carnage on a club night.

I have given them a good coating of Army Pai ter light brown Super Shader which gives them some durability like a varnish coat. It does give them a shine, but I think it works with the cartoon style.

In total we have 65 worms and 1 super sheep. The worms are around 28mm from eyebrows to end of their tail, so I am claiming five points each.

66 x 5 = 330 points

Additionally I have done a little more for my Old World army

The Ogres box set had some sprues left that I hadn't used. There is now an option to take an allied unit of Empire Ogres in the Empire army and arm them with a mix of weapons. I have already used them in a game against Orcs and Goblins and although their multiple wounds make them tough. They cannot hit a barn door with those black powder weapons. I don't think I hit a single thing all game.

They are intimidating enough though, so I might use them again.
They are 40mm tall so

5 x 7 = 35 points.

Grand total for the week 365 points.

Well, those worms might like to throw explosives around, but you definitely dropped a points bomb here too, Peter! What a wonderful wacky whopping worms horde. You have achieved a very fitting cartoony effect with them, and I am sure playing the game will be much enhanced by these lovingly painted pieces. Th Ogres are quite impressive too, and as long as your opponent doesn't realise their lack of proficiency with their weapons you should be fine I think. Not that they need those anyway...

365 points it is!

From KyleC - Khorne Continues (Overdue&Returns) - (86 pts)

So the armies of the northern wastes continue across my desk this week. Still struggling with the cold and a cold, but some downtime has given me a chance to put some effort into painting.. and here are the results!

First up a unit of Ogroid Theridons from Warriors of Chaos (WoC) in Age of Sigmar (AoS).. that have been repurposed to be Chaos Ogres for my WoC army for The Old World (ToW) instead. Hefty beasts of burden with massive axes to chop through any and all that get in their way... at least that is what I hope they will do..

Absolutely PITA to get to rank up though. Really not meant for ToW, or for ranking up but with some finagling they lined up int he end.. But I wouldn't bet on getting a second rank in on them anytime soon!

Now for the overdue portion of the post... the unit I am calling The Forsaken.. so aptly named as I have no clue where I received or picked these up from, but looking online they hail from the times of Realm of Chaos and 1st/2nd edition of Warhammer. Pure metal, and after a few coats of gloss varnish before a black primer, I had a good base to make some angry little warriors.

I have plans for regular warriors for the army, so instead for these they will be used for the actual unit called The Forsaken.. mutants of the army and just a mess to manage... much like this unit was..

But ranked up they look the business and they were relaxing to paint once I got the initial color scheme nailed down. They might have too much red as a grouping or on each model, but they are literally just full armor warriors.. with only the odd one with boots of gloves..

Slapping them all together now we can see the army growing nicely ( and also show how large the Lord on his Monstrous mount ( 50x75 base there ). Is this the greatest list to be using for gaming... no.. not even close.. but is it thematic so far, and coming together chaotically?? Very much so and so fits nicely to how I wish this to be!

Last up I have is the test of the actual chaff unit for the army.. the Musician for the Marauder unit. Which I have taken as being the reavers from the Blades of Khorne forces in AoS. An army that I have wanted to do and have build up, but never got painted. So re-purposing them for this army feels right. Static grass to be applied when he sits with the unit as a whole so I can see how and where the tufts will look best.

Really enjoyed painting the skintones on this guy.. spent a fair bit of time on it with having to go back into the shadows a bit harder as it was originally very washed out. But the grey undertones really helped the model.

Unit as a whole will be a bit darker than the other units. As they haven't fully proved their worth or merit to the almighty Khorne lords, and thus are only allowed portions of red armor compared to those that have bathed in the enemies blood for so long! Or something to that effect..

3rd topic now completed in the Library.. though not focusing on it so much this year, figured that this fit the criteria so would be a shame not to include Curt and company's hard work on the Library Challenge into the post!

Points wise, we have:
    - 3 x 40mm Ogres - 21 pts
    - 8 x 28mm Warriors - 40 pts
    - 1 x 28mm Marauder - 5 pts
    - Overdue and Returns Topic Bonus - 20 pts
Giving us 86 pts for today's post.

With a focus on getting more of the Marauders finished over the coming week.. though crazy week for work incoming so not sure how many will actually get completed there!

Whoa now those guys look... pretty scary Kyle, nice work on those minions of the Blood God. My favourites of course are the old-school metal Chaos Warriors, to my mind they've never been beat in terms of cool sculpts. I have a ton of them in my old WHFB Chaos Warriors army and they are just - COOL. 86 points added to your tally!

From StuartL - A Giant Sized Post - 107 points

Hello all,

Sadly I wasn't able to get anything posted last week due to a number of reasons. Work has been getting busier as some staff are off work with Covid or are isolating due to being in close proximity. I've also hit the mid-challenge doldrums where other activities are calling to me and picking up a brush is getting harder to do. Anyway, I managed to get a couple of things finished off, so expect a few posts from me today.

I thought I would kick things off with a giant sized post of Reaper Bones minis. All of these are from the various Reaper Kickstarters over the past few years. As anyone who has bought any of the Bones line will know, the smaller models tend to be quite bendy, but the bigger models are very sturdy and very cheap for what you get. I have a load of regular heroes and monsters for my D&D games, but I wanted to focus on getting some of the larger models ready for the table-top and so present here a bunch of bigger, chunkier models.

Starting off with the smallest figure I painted, this Beastman stands a meagre 40mm in height. Though not really visible due to his attacking pose, there are a bunch of skull emblems on his belt.

This next group of minis, range in height from 50-60mm and include 2 Ogres, a Rat-ogre, a Minotaur, a Formorian Giant and an Ettin. Several of them are also carrying skulls on their belts or on a necklace.

Next up we have two Hill Giants, each standing over 60mm tall and sporting tree trunks with which to wallop adventurers who stray within reach.

And finally, standing at a whopping 100mm tall, a Cyclops. His weapon is made from the base of a pillar chained to the end of a massive branch from a tree, and he is wearing a belt made from fleeces and a necklace of skulls and assorted bones. It's these details that really help define the scale of the figure.

And just to give you an idea of the size of these minis, we have Jarl Hvat-skael (a 28mm gripping beast mini) posing in front of the group. As you can no doubt tell, all of the minis were painted in the same fashion. I was tempted to try doing different skin tones, but figured that it would be easier to do them all the same and get them done faster.

So, by my rough calculations I have:
1x40mm @7 points = 7 Points.
8x54mm @10 points = 80 Points.
1xMonster @20 points = 20 Points.
For a grand total of 107 Points.

There are a total of 21 Skulls on these minis, which can be added to my Skullz Duel total as well.
Skullz Total: 78

See you in the next post!

Great to see you back again Stuart.  I think we all have a love/hate relationship with Reaper Bones minis, but I agree that size definitely matters in this case.  I love this collection of massive brutes, the Jarl better turn around before he becomes a tinned snack.  I did not count the Skullz as it is well below my pay grade.  I will leave final tally to the Skullometer and the Skullz-Boffin.

From KyleC - The guardroom - Ogres and Ambots (90 Points)

So another paint up and another chamber..

Was trying to find suitable models for guards, and had these on my to to list for a clubmate and I think they work. Being that they are big, heavy looking models, that are slow or dim witted and would probably be told to stay put or don't let anyone get through or out.

The necromunda Ogres all come with some sort of 'enhancement' on them making them look bigger than they really are. Or adapted to the situation that whomever owns them can think up.. but mostly it is larger fits or saws attached to where their hands used to be.. and or a large socket wrench.

Primarily painted in contrast painted with a light drybrush over top. Something that I am trialing out to see if I can speed up painting armies and I am liking the results as a whole. Especially when a few feet back and when collected as a whole gang.

The ambots I just picked 2 colors at random for each of them and went from there. Then put in some metallics where I thought they should fit and overall I like it. My mate wanted simple so he got that.. I think if I were to do one or two for myself they would be a lot more personalized, and have warning markings on them or something.

Overall though 10x 40mm models for 70 pts plus the 20 pts for the chamber giving me an easier 90 pts than the last point bomb there. Plus gives me squirrel point 8 here also... as if I need more random.. .ooo goblins...

From JamieM - GW Ogres (90 points)

Some massive slabs of muscle from me this post.  Larger than the most 'roided up body builder, these ogres will cause nothing but trouble to wherever they go.

The trousers were all sewn in the middle, so I had some fun with lots of different colours as I figure they just get captives to make them things like clothes out of whatever they've pillaged.

And I refuse to call the "Ogors", which GW have rebranded them as in a bid to protect IP..... either that or confuse ebay searches!

Couple of banners and a couple of totems, the chap bellowing counts as a musician!

Lots of tattoos on them too, which were fun to do.  The front of the torsos were a little cramped, but the shoulders and backs provided ample canvas for them.

12 40mm figures makes 84 points I believe?  Now it's off to work more on the colosseum unless something else dis.... Ooooo look, a Squirrel!

From Daved - Oh now there is a nice bit entertainment for you all, a lovely bunch of ogres , with nice tattoos - lets call that 90 points

From StuartL - Challenge Island Safari Journal - 3rd Jan. (76 points)

Greetings fellow C.I.S.T.ers and other Challenge Island visitors.

Well, it seems like the tour suffered from a slight delay, but we are off on our safari of the island! For our first stop, we're heading out from Docherty's Dock to visit Cooke's Crevase. The area around Cooke's Crevase is famous for it's unique geological conditions. Scientists and researchers from around the world visit the area to see the numerous rock formations which are unique to this area of the island. In fact recently a group of anthropologists headed out to the point we are visiting. They thought that they had found evidence that the standing stones were actually a point of worship for some as of yet unknown tribe of large, bipedal carnivores. Fascinating stuff eh? Strangely the anthropologists never returned, it looks like they all left their campsite in a hurry, leaving only some torn up clothing and the remains of a large barbecue. Needless to say they won't be getting their deposit back. Challenge Island Safari rules state that all campsites must be left clean and tidy when you leave, even if you are a scientist and just got wind of some new cultural discovery.
Anyway, here we are at the rock formation. Please tie up your camels nearby and feel free to walk around and take some pictures.

As you can see, the rocks are a naturally occurring formation, with some noticeab... wait, can you hear something? It sounds like guttural laughter and the tromp of heavy feet. Quick, into the bushes over there.

Oh my, it looks like the anthropologists were correct, this is a site of worship. Those ogres don't look very friendly, stay quiet everyone. It looks like they are more interested in the rock formation.

It seems that they are between us and the main road. We may need to take a short detour. Everyone follow me and we'll see if we can get on with our tour and.... NO! Don't take a photo you idiot! Great, now they've seen us. Run!!!

------------------

Since the challenge started, I have had a hard time gaining any traction with my painting. Work, family and friends have all done their best to ensure that my hobby time has been pretty minimal. That all seems to be over and done with for now and I have a few more entries lined up and underway. Fingers crossed I'll have more for you over the weekend.
The Ogres are from GW's plastic range and are painted with a mix of Vallejo and Citadel colours. The skin was done with one of the new GW Contrast paints and it has left the models with very dark patches on their skin. I'm not sure if I will go back over them with usual paints, but I haven't quite got the Contrast stuff down yet. More practice is needed I think. I'm not a big fan of Age of Sigmar, so I figure I'll use the Ogres for Dragon Rampant.
The rocks are bits of cork bark sawed flat and glued down to a base. I built them for the last challenge, but ran out of time before I could get them done. Luckily this year's challenge has given me a good reason to get them finished off. I plan on using them for Dragon Rampant or maybe Saga depending on the scenario.

The rocks are about 6" across, 4" deep and about 2" high, but I realise that there is a fair amount of open space between them. At most they should score me 4 points, plus 30 for the location. The ogres are closer to 40mm minis than 28mm, so for 6 of them I estimate the total at 42 points.
So... 4 plus 30 plus 42 should add 76 points to my tally.

Aha! So that is where Martin is getting all those rocks for you to bang together on Thursdays! Nice work on the standing stones and on the worshipers. I agree on the points - 76 is being added to your tally.

From AdamC - 3 x Reaper Bones Ogers

These are a side project that gives me a bit of break form the Irish Points Bomb (which may or may not be a true point bomb but its fun to say) I am working on.  I did these to serve as unit of Heavy infantry for a game of "Dragon's Lament" (a mash up of the Dragon Rampant and Pikemen's Lament rues) I was supposed to run on Sunday.  Unfortunately my daughter was sick and grandma's house didn't have heat. due to a miss timed oil delivery.  This forced me to bow out of the event so these guy missed their debut.

I tried to make them look life like but not to human in past I used green for ogres but these guys seemed to say a yellowish brown was more right.  The looks was everything I wanted.

These are Bones Figures from Reaper and they have great musculature realistic but not too human and the muscles are cut and defined making highlighting fairly easy.

Since they were on the table at the same time as the Irish they have been influenced by that color palate but I think that works.  I did the ogres metals work in copper as that was one of the first metals humans learnt to manipulate so it seemed to fit for primitive monsters I figure the items are more decorative than protective.  As to points they are about 40mm foot to eye balls (I took a photo with a ruler but its not uploading for some reason.  Curt gave me 7 points for the Wereboar so I have guessed that 21 points is a fair total for these three fellow (subject to the minions agreement)

From Ray
Well I'll bow to Curt's will, if he gave you 7 points for your Wereboar, who am I to argue? 21 points it is!
Smashing work on these Ogres Adam, They do have so much muscle definition (a bit like myself!) they look as they they'd almost paint themselves. A good colour for the skin too, green would have looked a little to unrealistic IMHO.
Great work and keep it up!

First Entry MarkW No 52 Games Workshop Undead and Ogres 275 Points

Firstly 2 thank yous.
Firstly to the team behind the great challenge - it has been a shot in the arm for me and got me out of a hobby funk.
Secondly to my good friend who recommended it after 2 previous appearances in your challenge.

On to the models.

I have started an undead army for Age of Sigmar and I am using this challenge as the vehicle for me to get through this.  I have had quite a productive 2 weeks since the start and have completed a fair bit over Christmas.

Now I admit photography is not my strongest skill, so please excuse the pics.

I therefore present for your review

10 Ghouls
10 very old recycled and metal Grave Guard
1 Wight King
1 Wraith
1 Banshee
1 Abhorrant Ghoul King
5 Hexwraiths
4 spirit hosts (incl one made of old Citadel metal figures)
1 Black Coach
1 Coven Throne

The coven throne was a joy to paint, but a pain to assemble.  I have fond memories of playing against a Black Coach in a Vampire Army about 14 years ago, the coven throne really shows how far GW have moved forward in their design and ability to provide large models.

I wanted a stand out army and I always feel that basing adds a lot to the miniatures so I have gone for a mix of resin bases and the use of Vallejo basing materials to craft the earth where they don't do resin bases in that size of shape.  This is all finished off with Vallejo Still water and various bits of basing foliage and clumps.

In addition I completed a small christmas present for another friend of 3 x Titan Forge Deep Sea Diving Ogres (including a captive Mermaid).

As for points, that is 27 foot figures at 28 mm which is 135 points.  For the cavalry, spirit hosts and two big things I am not sure so I will leave for the rules wizards to tell me.

Lastly, I have also had time to rebase some old skeletons.  A friend donated these to my Undead army and they are original White Plastic skeletons from one of the original citadel Skeleton Army boxes.  I rebased 53 of these.  As I am not touching the paint job they are not eligible for this challenge, but I thought I would share how good they look on decent round bases as opposed to square.

My major concern about this challenge was that I thought me being productive would lead to a smaller paint queue and gaps on my shelves.  For some bizarre reason, this is not true in either case.
first a confession- this post was ready in time for publication LAST week, but I was busy doing weird things like math and looking for stray cables to electronics whose functions I don't understand.
Mark, this is a very nice army. I really like the color option you selected for the spirits and like how you carried it through to the war machines of the black coach and the massive spirit mob! From the just right gore on the ghouls, color of the spirits, inclusion of the older skellies with the newer plastic sculpts, the wonderful boggy basework, this is an impressive host.
I really like the orgres as well, swinging anchors with the brass diving helms, they are very nice sculpts and I'm envious of your friend who received them!
so one plus one[counts toes...be a moment]
253 point paint bomb with an extra 17 points for the war machine details brings you to 275!
great Job!
