From Codsticker: Footsore Miniatures Dark Ages Welsh (60pts)

As I enjoy Dark Ages/Early Medieval wargaming I bought into the Footsore Miniatures Kickstarter a few years ago. I got a number of packs, trying to build units that would work in Saga and/or Lion Rampant. To that end, I bought 12 archers.

There are 4 different sculpts, including one with an arrow knocked:

Every aspect of these figures is beautifully sculpted:

I quite like the Book of Kells hair style on this miniature:

As they would probably be from less advantageous stock I declined to paint trim or patterns on their clothing:

I very nearly finished 4 mounted Variags of Khand but they will have to wait until next week.

No complex math here (sorry Miles): 12 28mm models @ 5pts each equals 60 pts.

From TeemuL: First I apologize, I try to minion this by phone and I guess I have destroyed some styling at least. I hope all the photos and texts are there. But to the point, very nice archers.  The minis look great and your painting does them justice.

From GeoffreyT: Adventures and Adventurers (High Adventure)(70 points)

Hello Challengers,

From the Historical Drama studio, I head east to the High Adventure Studio.

Nothing says the 'high' in high adventure like a Himalayan Yeti.

'Hi 'says the Yeti.  I think a Yeti would sound a bit like a Wookie.

This beastie is made from Super Sculpey polymer clay over an armature made from wooden beads and copper wire.  Once I started sculpting it, it was looking a bit silly and ridiculous, so I leaned into that angle and really liked the outcome.  It is about 40mm to the eye.  It came out a lot like a creature from the book "Where the Wild Things Are".

Going ever higher and further, this is the now repaired Star Trek USS Reliant model from RAFM corporation circa 1983.

This thing was very battered, and took some time to repair.  I shaved off all the protrusions from the dents, and filled the hollows with Grey Stuff epoxy putty.  The metal is a lead rich pewter and super soft and flexible.

The aerofoil/bridge wing thing on the back needed some repair too.  But that was because I initially cut bits off it thinking it was a part of the sprue, then had to glue it all back together again after I did some research and found it was a part of the ship. The repair was all the work here, the paint was a simple dry brush in shades of pale great and white.

Of course, once adventuring you can get out of your space ship.   This is a 28mm fig from Ex-Manus Studios, called void suit explorer.

Nice mini, got it to add to my Stargrave crew.  It is a Pewter casting (not white metal).

Not all adventurers are successful.  Here are four that didn't succeed.  These are bone and entrail piles by Wizkids.  Not sure what to call these things for points analysis.  Maybe they are 28mm prone figures?  They are certainly prone, but is there enough remains to count as a miniature?

Finally we get onto a project I am pretty excited about.  This is the start of my own home sculpted ghost Archipelago warband. Ghost Archipelago is a Frostgrave variant set in a fantasy archipelago full of dinosaurs and undead and snake men.  A crew requires 10 miniatures;  a heritor (hero) a warden (wizard) four specialist crew and four non-specialist crew.  Here are the first four I have made.

This guy will probably be the Heritor.  Otherwise he could be a man at arms.

This guy is for sure a man-at-arms.  I'm really pleased with this sculpt.

An archer is always handy in this game.  This one is muscular as were medieval longbow-men.

Barbarians have some hitting power, but tend to get beaten up due to lack of armour, but they are a good threat.

Now to the all important points count:

40mm yeti = 7 points

Spaceship = 10 points? same as the ones I did in an earlier post.

28mm Void suit explorer = 5 points

4 x unsuccessful adventurers.  Maybe 1 point each = 4 points.  They could be called 28mm prone figures for 2.5 points each, however there is not much left of these folk.

4 x 28mm ghost Archipelago crew = 20 points

High Adventure Bonus = 20 points

Total = 66 points.  Potentially changing with some discretion from the mighty minion.

On the home stretch now heading towards the director chair.  This weeks lot may well tip me over the 1000 point target I set for myself in this challenge.

Geoffrey T

From TeemuL: Your points estimations are on the target, but I'll round it up to 70 because of the sculpting and general high level of painting. The Yeti looks quite sad, I hope he finds some company after he said "hi". Star Trek is usually a clear winner in my books, but those adventurers look really nice and the backstory sounds interesting. Good job!

From ScottC: Black and White (Black Numenorians) & Books (Hobbit Shirriffs) (315pts)

Back again with a 2-for-1.

I decided to paint up my Black Numenorians for my Black and White theme.

Infantry are 3d prints by Quartermaster 3d (28mm) with the exception of my morgul knight captain (TPGEO) and the cavalry are some morgul knights by GW and one 3d print by TPGEO. I was going to say that this completes my mordor model collection, but I have another unassembled nazgul in a box somewhere...

9 Cavalry in total

14 Infantry

Next up for my Books category I painted up my Hobbit Shirriffs lead by non other than Robin Smallburrow and Holfoot Bracegirdle!

23 halflings in total.

The two heroes are davale miniatures

The others are TT Combat halfling shirriffs

(Sorry about forgetting my map last time Teemu!) -PS - Let me know if I pushed the black and white theme a bit, I would be happy to paint up a solo figure in lieu. Let me know!

Total:

37x 28mm infantry = 37 x 5 = 185

9x 28mm cavalry = 9 x 10 = 90

Bonus challenges x2 = 40 points

Total: 315

From TeemuL: Lovely Lotr goodness, Scott! The Black Numenorians make quite a contrast with the colourful hobbits, they won't have a chance against all the clubs and occasional small stones. Black and White theme is bit of a stretch and when you nicely volunteer, I will gladly accept a solo figure to make my conscience. I will award you full points with this post though, since otherwise your journey would be messy. But I do expect to see a black and white mini from you later in the Challenge. Did I say I like those hobbits a lot? And the shields of Numeronians really catch an eye, very nice.

From PeterD: Roman Infantry for Under Construction (80 points)

Next up for me is a unit of 12 Late Roman Infantry for the Under Construction theme. I had a good burst of painting activity on mid to late October and got these figures partly painted during that time. Then my wife came home from visiting her mother and suddenly there was a lot of other stuff to get done.....

Anyway they are finished now, 12 28mm figures all of them Gripping Beast.  Ten of the figures are stock from the Plastic Late Roman box kit while the standard bearer and one of the officers are metals from the Arthurian range.

I have painted them as members of the Legionis Secundae Augustae based at Rutupiae near Sandwich in Kent, now known as Richborough Castle, under the command of the Comes litoris Saxonici per Britanniam. This is one of the units based in Brittania which are the descendents of Legio II Augusta who had been part of the original Claudian Invasion force and never left the island. Rutupiae is where a lot of the action in Rosemary Sutcliffe's novel The Silver Branch takes place.

So far I have painted several units based on Legio II Augusta including some Lanciari and a ballista earlier in the Challenge. I'll treat this as a standard unit of Auxiliary, neither Verean or Raw, under the To the Strongest ruleset we've been using. The GB plastics give a nice regular look to the unit with a couple of archers in the back ranks for a bit of long range fire power. The vexillum has a rough impression of the Capricorn (a sort of goat/mermaid hybrid) emblem of Legio II Augusta.

I also thought I'd share some photos from a recent game played with my Barbarian Conspiracy period armies, which I began work on during Challenge XII. It's at Curt Clubhouse using his terrain mat and river, but you can see my British Village, Dark Age fort and a lot of my troops on table.  Also visible are JeremyM from prior challenges, SylvainR (with beer) and Curt's legs.

The Scots Irish deeply so as to give the ballistae in the fort a wide berth.

Roman battle line

The bases I used are a little wide for the fort's ramparts so we used MDF bases to prop up the missile troops

Typical late antiquity scrumming the background, with Roman Cavalry in the foreground.

I make it 60 points for the figures plus 20 for the Under Construction theme.  The base points count toward both the SPQR and Carausius Emperor of Britain Side duels.

From TeemuL: Good looking Romans and they don't even have too-complex shields with them. There has been some different minion decisions regarding Under Construction Studio, some have rewarded full points for minis, which were partly started before, others have rewarded only the Studio bonus. Personally I think both are bit extreme and there is clearly room for confusion. So far I have awarded the full points and I will continue like that until whipped.

Your games look nice, having a friendly Snowlord nearby with a nice garage is a benefit.
