From BenitoM: Warg Riders (40 points)

For my second post in this year's Annual Painting Challenge I continued with more Uruk Hai additions for Midgard, the recently published miniature rules to play in the heroic ages.  In this case, the first batch of warg riders, the mounted component for my army.

These are four mounted archers and will fight as regular light cavalry; I also plan to use them for scouting/recon patrols in campaigns.

Note that number of models in a unit is irrelevant in Midgard. Units are arranged in square rectangle bases that you can fill with as many models as you want.  The rules suggests using a 12 cm frontage (which I know will annoy some imperial-metric fans like Richard Clarke) but you are free to use whatever size you deem, as long as all units have the same base frontage (note: depth of the base is not relevant).

Given than I'm basing my mounted units on old GW round 40cm diameter individual bases,  I can put three models per unit. But as I said, you can base individually in rectangular bases if you like to accommodate more models per unit.

These warg riders are 3D printed models in 28mm designed by Medbury Miniatures belonging to its mounted orc range.

Next in the painting line are some GW plastic warg riders, in the painting pile since early 2000s (they were bought at the time when the Peter Jackson's films were released and GW started selling the LOTR range).

This post adds 40 points to my score this year (4 x 28mm mounted models @10 points each).

Hello Benito

The Warg Riders look terrifying!  Your Midgard army  project is coming along nicely.
Another 40 points for your Scoresheet

From Curt: LotR Warg Riders (20 Points)

Just a short post before we head out the door to visit me ma.

Here are two Lord of the Rings Warg Riders. These are metal castings from the early releases and were a real joy to work on.

Funny enough, I've had these two bad lads done since the first few weeks of the Challenge, but I wanted to bulk them out with a few more models to make a more substantial force. Anyway, I made the mistake of picking up a box of the newish plastic ones and, well, what can I say but: Ewww.

It's not that the plastic models are that bad, but after working on the earlier, crisply sculpted metal guys the new ones really suffer in comparison. So much so that they're still sitting 75% done on my desk.  Sigh. I know I won't be able to muster the will to get them done before the end of the Challenge, so I figure I'd best run with these guys for now.

I had a bit of fun with the fur coats on these two wargs, making them a little more punchy and hyena-like than in the drab beasts in the movies.

Maybe later this spring I'll get the other six done to join up with these, but they'll have to wait for now as I have a couple other entries I want to get done before we call it a wrap next Wednesday.

Okay, these chaps should give me 20 more points for my painful climb to my 1200 point goal...

Tamsin, thanks for scoring me in and being the Trolly Dolly today - much appreciated. See you folks in a couple of days. Have a great weekend and paint hard!

Curt

Look, Captain Campbell, there's absolutely no reason for you to have popped back into the cockpit. As you can see, I'm completely in control of this flight. What do you mean "But, we're upside down!"? Tsh!

Magnificent work on the wargs and riders. The beasties look quite ferocious, as do the puppies they are riding.

20 points you say? Hmm, that's divisible by 5...

Tell you what, I'll deduct a point from each for disturbing me in the cockpit and then add 2 bonus points back to make it divisible by 5 again. Now, for the last time, flying upside down is perfectly normal and safe, so you can go on your little road trip in the full knowledge that we'll be here when you return.

From NoelW for Thursday: Wargs and warships (170 points)

This is my last post this week. It has two parts. Firstly, here are 13 Warg riders from Lord of the Rings. Some are metal, some plastic. I painted them in two batches, so that the drybrushing of the wargs created rather different browns, as if they were different breeds. I may add a couple more, perhaps with grey or black fur.

The orcs I found a little difficult to give a satisfactory look. The definition on some of the figures is not perfect, and if you simply paint everything dark and dirty, as seems realistic, the figures as a whole tend to look a mess. I may go back to them at some point and brighten a few elements of some of them, although I’m reasonably happy with the overall effect as a group.

13 28mm mounted figures is 130 points. 1 squirrel.

Like many gamers, I’ve been seduced by Warlord’s Cruel Seas. So the second part of this post is my first attempt at painting MTBs. I’m not a naval gamer, so my approach here has been to copy some of the ideas of others, with the aim of making each ship slightly different so they can be readily identified in a game.

Looking at the photos it seems reasonably obvious I need a better cloth for the sea. This looks far too calm!

I think the going rate for these 1/300th models is 8 points each, so that’s 40 points, I think. And another squirrel.

Great looking orcs and wargs! The dry brushing technique works really well and they're nicely varied! Great to see you getting into cruel sea (I have to admit to being tempted!) They look really good too!
Once more Toby and I are in full agreement with your numbers 170 points it is and another very impressive output for just one week!
All the best Iain
