From GuyB: Under Construction - Still! 180 points.

My life has been hectic of late, so forgive the double scoring post. Nevertheless, I have found the time to finish a few miniatures, if not any projects. One such project definitely falls under the heading of 'under construction', for about 20 years...

A lifetime ago, in 2001-02, I introduced my son to the <i>Lord of the Rings<i> Strategy Battle game. While he was enamoured by D&D, he never developed the wargaming habit, and the models sat unloved for a number of years. Recently, I dug them out and started a process of repairs (replacing broken bows) and repainting.

The end result is what could be salvaged from a squad of elves. Bows were replaced with spares from Perry War of the Roses. You'll note some of the bows are different.

I simply dry-brushed the original models white and put a new layer of paint on each.

The Haldir character model does not count, as I kept some of the original paint work (I liked the chainmail he had), so only touched up the cloak, the flesh, the sash, the hair and the base. But he wasn't started from scratch, nor were two others of the models.

There's also three dead men of Dunharrow.

Moving on... to high adventure! And what better for high adventure than a barbarian!

Here's Thundarr the Barbarian, with a ghost I missed last time.

Both use contrast/speed paints to good effect. And what challenges is Thundarr facing?

Zombies? Yes, some with a lick of different greens to make a ghastly skin tone.

So in the pile of LOTR shame, you'll spot I have a few more Elves to base up and finish. Definitely 'under construction!' I make 13 elf models (less Haldir and two other models which retain some of the original paint), so 60 points plus three ghosts for 15 points, with the 20-point bonus for the round, that makes ... 100.

We have one hero and eight undead nasties for high adventure, giving us another 45 points plus the 20-point bonus for high adventure. Next time (and I'd better be quick!), there will be some historical drama!

Welcome back and what a great post. My understanding is that you can score points for 1/2 finished  figures in the Under Construction, I'm the minion and I say so. Therefore 180 pts in total

From GuyB - (Ready Sunday) Under Construction and barely in time! (20 points)

Time is running out for my first entry, with the 21st cut-off point approaching fast. I have been working very hard on prepping Swedish for the Great Northern War (for a biopic on King Charles XII of Sweden). So far, I have undercoated and based a great many Swedes. A few even have paint on, but they aren't ready yet...

I sprayed them grey, then added a brown wash before dry brushing them white. This gives them a nice 'grey scale' colour ready for contrast paints/speed paints/inking. The models are all Wee Wulf miniatures (formerly Musketeer).

When finished, this will be an amazing force... but time is running out... so what to do... I have to post something. Oh myyyy!

Oh wait... I've recently started playing a 5th edition D&D campaign, and the games master has suggested we may use miniatures. He also hinted that some undead may be one of our first encounters. So, I dug out something suitable for generic undead 'nasties.

So, meet the ghosts. These are the GW variety, not the ones from Button House or Woodstone Mansion for our US cousins. These have been painted with a combination of contrast paints with a greyscale undercoat (the grisaille method - not slap-chop!!!).

These were fun to paint. I probably spent more time in prepping and greyscaling the models than I did painting them.

Points-wise, it's 20 points for the four models, plus a slightly spurious 'under construction' bonus - I will get around to painting the Swedes soon.

Journalists and their deadlines and tiny pictures (make them larger so I don't have to), I'll get Angus to take the Mickey. So the ghosts are beautiful and I love them. However you aren't getting an under construction bonus for figures you haven't finished, Miles and Tamsin will hold me down while the Snowlord removes my dangly parts. Paint the Swedes, these film types have high standards and don't understand how small the figures are, and you can have the bonus.

From Guy B: In the nick of time... (Caprica) (185 points)

Crikey! Time flies... and we're almost at the cut-off point for entries... I'd best post something then!

Our local club has been painting up for a 1940s campaign and I am painting up the British Expeditionary Force. I painted two sections of 10 men prior to the challenge and have another few sections to go before I'm finished. So I had my BEF undercoated ready for the challenge and then...

... I became distracted. My fellow challenger Chris K has an idea to speed up the painting of his French and I thought it was such a clever idea that I had to try it too. His entry can be read about here. So I dug out some old Bolt Action French (pre Warlord!) I had sitting in a draw for over a decade. There were originally undercoated black. I added in some of the Atlantic plastics, which fit in pretty well. I gave them all a dry brushing of white and then tried a mix of standard paints and contrast.

I took Chris K's formula for Khaki and added a little more Militarum Green. Mine was about an even mix of Militarum to Darkoath Flesh, or perhaps 5 to 3 in favour of the green, as I toyed with my batches.

The flesh is Speedpaint Crusader Flesh or Instantcolor Phoenix Feather. The leather is Speedpaint Hardened Leather (which comes out very red!).

The backpack was German Camo Beige Brown (VMC 821) with a brown wash. The wood was English Uniform (VMC 921). Helmets were Olive Grey (VMC 888) with a careful green ink wash and a slight highlight.

So I got carried away in batch painting and we have 33 French which I make as 165 points and it has to be Caprica... a noble but doomed effort against the Cylon err.... German invasion.

Hmm, I think I really need to paint some Brits now!!!!

Edit:

Hmmm, it looks as though my closing comments disappeared. I'll have a go at remembering what I wrote - it's quite possible that Guy decided to edit the post at the same time I was "minioning" it and finished after me, so his version is the one which got posted!

In the nick of time indeed! I think we all understand how easy it is to get distracted by, errrm, distractions to the detriment of our intended projects.

These Frenchies look great for speed-painting.

Now that you've made it onto the roster, perhaps you could have a word with your boss...

GuyB: Some characters for my D&Ders - Sander's Sandune

I'm currently working on a large batch of minis but suddenly realised I needed to post something! I finished these models about two weeks ago.

I hadn't thought about the challenges, but when I looked through them, I realised I'd completed Sander's Sandunes by accident. The one model is a Talisman plastic Druid from 1994. I'd picked him out to experiment with Citadel Contrast paints. The Ghoul is kitbashed from the plastic cultists.

I'd also done some dwarves using a mix of Tamiya Smoke on bare metal, combined with undercoating the non-metallic bits with a white primer and finishing with more Citadel Contrast to finish. The Dwarves are metal Oathmark ones.

Points? I think that's 25 for five 28mm models and 30 for the challenge?

By Paul:
Some lovely miniatures there Guy, packed with character.
Those Oathmark Dwarves really appeal to me but I am trying to resist my inner magpie...
That is indeed 55 points for your tally

From GuyB - Polybian Romans taking shape...(280 Points)

With the clock ticking ever closer to the end of the Analogue Painting Challenge, I thought I'd best post up my Polybian Romans. One base of the Hastati you've seen before, all the rest are new.

I did have some Celtic command I painted up for Poldercon, but I didn't do the basing for them (Jasper did), so they don't count. I also rebased 120 Celtic infantry and some 20 cavalry - but they don't count either!

Principes with Lorica Hamata

Hastati with Pectorale plate

Triarii with Lorica Hamata

The models are mostly Victrix with some Agema and Warlord mixed in for variety and the odd metal miniature. The transfers are LBMS/Victrix with the odd hand painted shield.

Points wise, there's 14 bases of 4. So that's 56 models or 280 points in total. Still shy of my 400 points target...

I've still got a few more of these to paint before the army is finished, including some command for the Hastati, but I'm out of time for this challenge. It's been fun!

ByronM: Thank you Guy for some excellent looking Romans and for being involved in the challenge.  These look really good and I like all the weathering on them it makes them look more real than being perfectly clean.  I would have liked to see some pictures from the side or rear though for full effect.

From GuyB - Getting Started (33 Points)

With deadlines looming both in the analogue Painting Challenge and real life with the magazine, I thought I'd better post something to stay in the race!

Here's the start of my Beyond the Gates of Antares Algoryn force. Three test pieces at 12.5 points total (drones must count as half or less, right?).

However, my main project is painting a Republican Roman army for 217BC, our new project this year. I have a whole production line going, but here's my first finished base of Republican Romans. 20 points. More to come.

That's it for now!
Cheers,
Guy

ByronM: Excellent work Guy!  You actually make those Gates of Antares figures look good! I generally find them a little 2 dimensional, but those look quite nice all painted up.  Better yet are your Romans!  Wow, super clean lines and smooth shading.  I hope to see more like those in the future!

I am going with your points as listed, so a 32.5 (33 Ed.) point start, and more importantly, you avoid this weekends cull.  Which given your talent is a great thing as I can't wait to see more.
