From RayR - Almansa 1707 - English - Carpenter's Brigade 13pts

Last one from me today....I think?

Guess what? More 2mm tiddlers!

Here we have another English brigade, this one is led by Carpenter, like Killigrew's Brigade they fought in the 1st line of the left wing under Gen Tyrawley.
Once again the flags are purely speculative and are from my NYW collection.

The regts in this brigade were Guisgard's (La Fabreque) Dragoons, Essex's Dragoons, Carpenter's Dragoons and the only English Horse regt that fought at Alamansa Harvey's Horse (2 squadrons of)

All this hard work doesn't get me many points. Each base is worth 2.5 points, giving me a total of
12.5 points, the Brigadier id worth 1/2 point.
So that makes a total of 13 points.

Last one... you think? At this rate, I forsee a worldwide lack of 2mm models for the next few months. It looks like your French and British cavalry are a bit more evenly balanced now. Well, I'll keep my eye on the drafts section of the blog, but I'm going to give my failing eyes a bit of a rest.

ChrisW This and that [358 points]

We interrupt this post for a rambling rant.

So, to start off with an apology. Reading over my last post I realize I sounded a little dickish. On a week where I claimed 445 points I made the following comment:

"So, this weeks post came up a little short of what I was aiming for, but I guess it just means more stuff for next week"

Now that is a little rude to those that have a hard time finding the time in their busy lives to get to the painting that they want to do. It sounded a little cocky. I am sorry if I came off that way. I really do set high targets for each week, targets that I can never complete but that I always strive to. Last week fatigue took over and I accepted defeat. It was still a sizable post point wise, a lot of stuff that I wanted to paint got painted so a victory too.

It also bears mentioning, again, that I am retired and have no social life to speak of. I am married but she has her own distractions (and is social) It means I can sometimes put in 8 hours in a day working on hobby stuff (of course I do have to interact with her from time to time) It also works out, for the second year in a row, that the AHPC is the most productive hobby time for me and as such I plan to work as hard as I possibly can on the hobby (no day job helps)

So this week I have had an anomalous week. I was obliged to go to a movie and dinner with a friend on Tuesday, that took up most of the day, and on Thursday a friend dropped by from out of town. So Wednesday and Thursday were a bit of a wash as I had to clean the hurricane disaster that was my gaming room into something that resembled order. That was not easy. So Thursday was cleaning, prepping for a game of Fantastic Battles, dinner out and a game night, no hobby stuff. Oh well, thankfully I have some reserves that are almost finished that I hope to get to on Friday (writing this on Thursday) Also wife's son and his kids are visiting on Friday, which in a normal household would mean that I would be obliged to interact, but in this household it means I get to hide in the basement painting!!!

We now take you back to our studio tour, already in progress...

This week we shall take a limo ride to the books studio. I have a number of entries that, while having been made into movies in the past, could really do with better movies.

Limo ride

For this ride we share a limo with Sister Mary. Really not certain who makes this figure...

Black and White studio

Our first studio this week is the Black and White studio. Now I had a more ambitious plan for this studio and I may yet try it, but for now I have gone with my nuns as a black and white theme.

There are two Warlord nuns (men disguised as nuns), a RAFM figure and a bones figure, Not certain who makes the nun with glasses.

I must remember to blow off the excess flock before taking pictures

Limo ride

For the second limo ride we have a Pulp Figure panther lady from the horror section.

 Book Studio

So, maybe it is time for yet another Robin Hood movie, no wait, hear me out,  maybe it could be an adventurous, fun movie that does not insult ones intelligence, that more closely emulates the classic Errol Flynn movie, but a little updated and where the actors have (more or less) proper accents. (I'm talking to you Mr Costner)

Old GW Bretonnian figures (Will Scarlett is by someone else) finally  painted up. I have no immediate use for these figures, they were just in my path one day.

Then again could do a Robin Hood meets attack of the gorillas! Okay, maybe not.

On the animal theme, perhaps another Island of Dr Moreau. All these figures are by Pulp Figures from the horror section.

Finally in the non terrain segment we have the flying squad! Sprinters and pedalers form this elite metropolitan police force tasked with quick response to supernatural threats. Then again could be the return of the keystone cops.

The bikes are from Eureka (I think), the cobble stone based figures are Blue Moon and the final foot figure is West wind.

GW haunted forest

So, long over due to get this out of the way, four GW forests. Long thought about how I wanted them to look finally ended my analysis paralysis and had at them.

The trees were all sprayed a grey/white or light grey primer (primed so long ago I cannot remember what I used) The trees had a mix of Vallejo Black and sepia wash liberally applied and daubed off a bit with paper towel. Then touch ups were applied with whatever shades I had at hand (mostly craft old barn wood). Vallejo light/dark green slime and yellow mold were applied to the roots.

The base was done with craft paint burnt umber and dry brushed with craft raw sienna and craft khaki. The rocks were painted with GW Ratling grime contrast paint then touched up/dry brushed with light grey. Base flocking was standard Woodland scenic's green, with isolated patches of other brighter coloured flock.

 Deadwood forest?

Point wise, well these are 10"+ by roughly 6"+, so I guess 2 x 6" cubes per forest section.(x4)

However if someone wants/can do the more complex math I am fine with that just my brain isn't going to work on it...

Points total this time

  • 40 points for two Limo ride
  • 40 points for two Studios
  • 160 points for 4 GW forests
  • 155 points 31 x 28mm foot (I was not certain if the penny farthings counted as mounted)

Total of 395 points

No skulls this week, could have been 8 but I flocked over the skulls on the forest scenery.

Another wild mix of miniatures for this week, Chris. Nice work. I don't think you need to worry about your previous post. We all set targets for ourselves based on our own free time. Even if you have more than most, it can still be frustrating when we fall short of our goals. I envy you how much time you have available to you, but I certainly don't hold it against you.

Nuns on the Run is a fun movie, and those models look great. I don't think the penny farthings will count as cavalry models, but I will throw in some extra points for them, (not that you really need extra points with weekly posts like this).

I'm honestly not sure how to score the woods, I have been through every forest, wood and tree related post on the blog going back to Challenge 1 and I haven't been able to find an example of this set. While the bases may be 10" by 6", the trees don't actually take up all of that area (Also, how tall are the trees?). There is a lot of open space in those pieces of terrain, so counting each one as being 2 cubes apiece is a little on the generous side. I'm going to score them as 1.5 cubes a piece or about 9"x6"x6" to account for some of the open space. If you think I am being overly harsh, feel free to contact our esteemed Show Lord about it, this is my first time wearing the minion hat after all.

The classic GW minis and the menagerie of beasts and bestial creatures look superb, but it is the elite bobbies of Scotland Yard that are the stars of the show for me.

From RayR - Almansa 1707 - English Killigrew's Brigade 13pts

Yep its me again!
And its more Dragoons too, but this time we've swapped sides.

This small English Brigade was led by General Killigrew, the brigade fought in the 1st line of the Left Wing under General Tyrawley.

In this all red brigade were the 2 squadrons of Pearce's Dragoons, 2 squadrons of Peterbough's Dragoons and 1 squadron of Killigrew's Dragoons.

All the flags are speculative and made by my own fair hand and are from my NYW collection.

Points......2.5 points per base
making a total of 12.5 points
and 1/2 point for the Brigadier
Making a total of 13 points.

And yet another post from Ray, you don't know when to stop, do you? These dragoons look great, though you probably need a few more to counter the French cavalry in your last post. Looking down the line of drafts, it seems that we still have one more to come from you today, so lets keep moving.

From GregB - Predator AFV for the Sons of Horus (20 Points)

Predator AFV for the Sons of Horus. Model from Forge World.

Rounding off today's Horus Heresy offerings, we have another Space Marine AFV. This is a Predator tank, a classic old retro design from the days of the "Rogue Trader" game, gussied up and returned to the table by GW's Forge World studio for their Horus Heresy range. While these models are now available as multi-part plastic kits, this fellow is in fact a hybrid plastic and resin model from Forge World - assembled and primed for me by the excellent Steve B.

Wierdo weapons like this are such fun in GW's 30k setting.

Like the Spartan I submitted a couple weeks ago, this model kit has been sitting for years in my pile of shame, primed and ready to go, always on the edge of my intentions, but never receiving a lick of paint. Until now! It was on the shelf beside the Spartan, so having finished that beast off, I figured I would be wise to get this one out of the way as well.

View showing the rear access hatch. Spooky legion symbol on hand to, er, keep an eye on things...I'll see myself out...

In the wild and crazy spectrum of combat vehicles available to Space Marines in the Horus Heresy setting, the Predators are actually on the lighter side. They are not too heavily armoured, and don't carry troops. But they are platforms for a hilarious assortment of dangerous and whacky weapons, and you see as much with this variant - sporting laser cannons on the sponsons, and a dangerous and (slightly) unstable plasma cannon on the turret.

For the Warmaster!

All of these weapons will be useful in rendering moronic "loyalists" down to their component atoms as the Warmaster Horus completes his long march to save humanity! As ever, I'm sure this newly painted tank will be zapped on the first turn when its time on the table comes at last - but in so doing, maybe it will soak up and distract its opponent's attention long enough to let the Spartan make it to turn two!

This single 28mm vehicle should bring another 20 points. Thanks for reading, and remember - Horus for Hope!

Your Legion force just keeps on growing, Greg. The heavy firepower this thing is sporting should be enough to obliterate some of those pesky loyalists who fail to realise that Horus is the man to follow. You seem to have amassed quite the motorpool over the last few entries, I am getting pretty envious.

From RayR - 2mm Almansa 1707 - Dozevill's French & Spanish Dragoon Brigade - 21pts

I seem to be on a roll with the French at the moment?

Dozevill's Dragoon Brigade fought in the 1st line on the left wing under the Marques d'Avaray

They are based on 30x30 bases, which is half the size of the infantry bases, being 60x60.
Each base represents roughly 90 men.

In Dozevill's brigade were 3 Squadrons of French Courtbonne Dragoons, 3 squadrons of French Bouville's Dragoons & 2 Squadrons of the Spanish/Irish Mahoney's Dragoons.
The flags for all these units are purely speculative and taken from various online sites and changed in Microsoft Paint.

Mahoney's Dragoons

Courtbonne Dragoons

Bouville's Dragoons

Each Dragoon base is worth 2.5 points
So my Dragoons are worth 20 points
Brigadier 1/2 point

So a total of 20.5 points

You're really blitzing through these tiny figures, Ray. At this rate you'll be done with this project in no time. I am very impressed by your ability to focus on one project for so long and for your ability to focus on such small models when you are painting. I struggle with anything under 25mm.

From MartijnN: Statues, a lady, a snowman and 1001 Nights (B&W, High Adventure and a Limo ride) (180 points)

Last time, I ended with booking a ride to the Black & White set. There we find a Roman statue.

Hardly original, I know, but it’s in greyshade from the base to the top. This is a 3D printed Roman statue designed by Iain Lovecraft. I used mainly washes and drybrushes on this.

There more statues on the set, which may remind you to certain enormous statues guarding the entrance to a southern Kingdom in a well-known fantasy realm. These too are 3D printed, but scaled down to 10mm scale so now they are only 75mm tall…  I’d don’t really remember where I got them from though.

For scoring, I will claim these five statues as 28mm figures; they are much taller, but it’s a relatively simple paint job after all. I will also claim a squirrel for them though.

From B&W we request Lady Sarah to once again take us to our next destination, which is the High Adventure set. As a fee I offer this Roman matrona from Iain Lovecraft. I painted some Roman civilians for Challenge XII, and she is part of that set.

For High Adventure, I let myself be inspired by the Legend of the Abominable Snowman, Bigfoot, from the Himalaya. You can’t go much higher than that!

I painted this Yeti, a 3D printed miniature designed by Evan Carothers for his Wilds of Wintertide set. It is a great model, and it painted up quite nicely. It is nominally 28mm, but it stands 80mm tall to the top of its head. I’m not quite sure how to valuate it, perhaps, as a 54mm foot figure is 10 and a 54mm mounted figure is 20, at 15 points?

Now I wanted to have my contribution for today to be inspired by the theme, so I thought of movies and series like Sinbad, Arabian Nights, or The Thief of Bagdad.

Here then is a small collection of Arabian inspired miniatures, all 3D printed, from both Lovecraft and Carothers:

We have a djinn:

A priestess:

Two assorted Arabs:

Three lizard people, a lady and two warriors:

And finally, two Horus-type warriors

I’ll claim a squirrel for these too.

Just for the fun of it, I’ll book a further ride with Lady Sarah to get me to my first Blue Pass location, Western, even though it’s just bowshot away. Although this post already contains assorted female figures,  I will offer her this lady adventurer as a fee:

That’s it. For points:

5x 28mm figures (statues) = 25

Black and White bonus = 20

Lady Sarah bonus x 2 = 40

2x 28mm figures (Lady Sarah’s fee) = 10

Yeti = 15 points (?)

High Adventure bonus = 20

9x 28mm foot (1001 Nights) = 45

Grand total 175 points.

And two squirrels!

A fantastic bunch of fantasy figures, Martijn. I love the variety of Arabian themed models you've done, especially the Djinn. I have scored the Yeti as a 28mm Monster, so you're going to get a few extra points from there. I'm looking forward to seeing your entry for the Western category.
