From SanderS - 20mm Seven Years War 87th Highlanders (89 Points)

Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,

Let's bring you another 1:72 plastic contribution today. These miniatures from Redbox depict Jacobite Highlanders, but I tend to use them for my 7YW armies as well. At the moment I have about 3 regiments to be painted and had to decide which ones to paint. My first call for reference is the excellent Kronoskaf Project SYW page, this is one of the most complete Military History sites on the web I know of. It has OOB's for all Battles in the 7YW included heaps of articles on almost all regiments of almost ALL countries involved including uniform colour references.

Anyway I chose the 87th Keith's Highlanders for this regiment. I took two liberties in the scheme: I painted in an yellow line in the tartans because the black and blue lines that were actually used made for a very drab kilt and I made the claymore scabbards brown and belts white instead of black for the same reasons.

Here are the pictures:

Now, 22 figures x 4pts = 88 points. With the Bengal Lancers (80 points) and the Prussian guns (80 points) that makes a total of 246 points in 1:72 plastics. So if Ben doesn't drop a huge points bomb before this posting; I might just have won our little side duel... oh well I guess that's up to Curt to decide.

Cheers Sander

From Curt:

Very nice Sander! I'm not familiar with The Red Box figures. I just checked them out on the web and it looks like they have a good selection of ranges/periods available. Very cool! Sander, are they fairly rigid plastic or soft? By the look of them they seem to have good proportions and a variety of interesting poses.

Your painting on them is excellent - clean, distinct and vivid and I like your artistic license on the kilts. The choice of a yellow line really helps to make them stand out (actually it looks sort of like a Campbell tartan...).

With this entry you've indeed achieved your 200 points target in your 1/72nd duel with Ben. Congratulations! Both of you treated us to many beautiful models in this scale - well done.  Sander, I also notice that you are closing in on your points target so you'll have to think about a new one to take you into March.

From PeterB - First Entry: 6mm Napoleonic Russians (54 points)

Well, I finally managed to get some time to set up my camera and get some photo's of my first entry.  These are 6mm Napoleonic Russian heavy artillery from Baccus (2x12pdr Cannons and 1x10pdr Howitzer per battery).  I actually managed to complete these just after Christmas so I'm well into the next block of figures (light batteries and horse batteries) and these should be ready over the weekend.  I think this gives me 54 points and gets me off the mark.

My plan now is to continue with the 6mm Napoleonic figures until mid February and then switch to 28mm for the remainder of the competition.

I'll post a full description of these on my blog in a day or two.

From Curt:

There was a bit of a stutter-step on the posting of this entry but we're up and running now. :)

Great job Peter! It's nice to see another Challenger working in 6mm. These look very good and I especially like your basework (which I often think is critical in these smaller scales). What rules system are you using them for?

AND...Welcome to the Challenge!

From ScottB - Knights of Minas Tirith (55 Points)

Well I finally managed to complete the remaining 5 Knights of Minas Tirith, that were meant to accompany the single Knight I submitted to the Mount and Rider Bonus Theme round. But as probably many of you found, things got a little busy on the domestic and work fronts around that due date...

But no matter, I got one done in time for then, and can offer to you, the rest now...

I wont go on further as I fleshed out that post with a little prose...

Suffice to say, these Knights were sent, to recapture Osgiliath, in the movie; Return of the King, and there they met their 'Agincourt'...

I can't recall now whether such knights featured in the novel, ...

but I am glad PJ put them in the movie, as it meant...

GW gave us the figures to play the game :)

And one final shot of all 6 together as they should have appeared...

From Curt:

Absolutely beautiful work Scott. I knew when I saw your first 'test' model in the theme round that we were going to be treated to something very nice when these were all arrayed and you did not disappoint. As usual your painting is smooth and clean (especially on the flags and shields for which I've given a few extra points) and its further complimented by the wonderfully verdant groundwork. A worthy addition to your collection. Bravo!

Bonus Points Awards for the 'Rider(s) & Mount(s)' Theme Round

Please find below a chart outlining the allocation of bonus points for the 'Rider(s) & Mount(s)' Them Round along with the new point totals.

As a result of this bonus round we have a few people who've met their Challenge Points Targets (marked below in colour). Congratulations to MarkO and AaronH! Well done lads.

This round also sees StefanoS introduced onto the roster with is wonderful unit of Wurttemburg Chevaux Legere cavalry. Welcome aboard Stefano, great to see you with us again this year!

Finally, as a remember, this Saturday night is the deadline for submitting your submission for the 'Victorian' theme round so mark that in your calendar.

Thanks everyone!
