From MikeF - Old World Empire & Sherman Tank - Fantasy Room - 70 points

While working on my Steel Legion army, I've been picking away at a few other things. First up are some test models for a possible Empire Army for Warhammer: The Old World. Since there are no models for the Empire yet, I'm using 3rd party models to represent most of the units. I experimented with Wargames Atlantic Conquistador box to stand in for state troops. I painted them up in Altdorf colors and I think they'll look pretty good ranked up. I needed to keep the paint scheme fairly basic as I'll have to paint a large number of these guys. The models naturally have a more Spanish aesthetic rather than Holy Roman Empire, but I think they'll work. I really enjoyed painting the Wargames Atlantic models. They're simple sculpts that aren't cluttered with details that bog down batch painting. The torso and legs come in one piece and can be armed with a variety of weapons including spears, swords, halberds, crossbows and arquebus. The price is also decent as you get 24 in a box for under $50 CAN. Judging by current Old World pricing, Empire State Troops should be about $90 CAN for 20.

I'm claiming the Fantasy room for this group.

Second up is a Sherman tank for the game "Tanks for the Apocalypse." The game is from Snarling Badger Studio and takes place in an end of WWII post-apocalyptic America where the survivors have salvaged numerous Sherman tanks from the Lima Locomotive Works in Ohio and use them to battle for territory. The tanks are often given home modifications which may help or hinder you in the game. I had a 1/48 Tamiya Sherman that I've been using as a test model for various tank paint schemes. I gave it numerous conversions and a non-standard camo paint job.

6 x 28mm models = 30 points

1 28mm vehicle = 20 points

Fantasy room = 20 points

Total = 65 points

Looks like this will be my final post, so I'll hopefully see you all in December. Thanks for visiting!

Great work on these two very different projects Mike! Those pikemen look brilliant and will serve nicely for 'southern' Empire levies. I agree, the Wargames Atlantic sets are excellent. I've been using their STL versions and find the models to strike that balance between detail and not being too over complicated. Love the whacky post-apoc Sherman with it's blue Mickey Mouse camo. Also I see it won't run out of fuel or water anytime soon with it's jerry can reserve!

Thanks for pitching in with us again this year Mike. Hope to see you sometime this spring or summer when I'm in the 'Peg.

From EdwardG - A small Napoleonic offering to keep the numbers tally ticking on (25pts)

 Hej hej all,

I beg the forgiveness for a very long lag between submissions. My trip to Tokyo was excellent from a work perspective but a total disaster on the hobby front. Working each day 9-9 with a business dinner after, didn't leave much time or energy to paint once I'd gotten back to the hotel. 😵

So because of all that I'm massively behind my mini painting plan, and I've only got one mini to submit this week.

He's again a 28mm Foundry mini, he's painted in the uniform of a Voltigeur sergeant (heretical because the mini looks to be that of a grenadier!) and I've painted him up for Silver Bayonet. Because it's a fantasy game, I'm going to ask to claim the fantasy section bonus. Pretty please 🙏

Points for the entry:

28mm foot mini = 5pts

Section bonus = 20pts

Total = 25pts

Thanks all! See you in the very near future for a final post. Question is how much can I get done!?! (It can assure, it will be more a points grenade than a bomb...)

Best,

Edward 😀

Konnichi-wa Ed-san.. and welcome back from the land of the rising sun.. which after my trip there had a whole different meaning ( those after work drinking events can go on for a while.. ). Glad you survived, and got a piece painted all the same here!

So.. a fantasy entry with a naps models.. well mate.. given minion discretion here... and considering the proportions on the model is a bit comic like vs realistic.. I guess we can claim it to be fantasy.. this time ;)

25 pts for you
Kyle

From DavidB: paladins of Morr, Fantasy and Lady Sarah's Cart (110 points)

I have to apologize for being absent for a moment as real world has intruded greatly. I am 3rd shift now and busy with Military retirement as well as keeping tabs on my kids who have scattered across Michigan in their life pursuits. I have actually spent more time driving than painting! i also no longer get email updates on the blog and am horribly behind on catching up on the eye candy. hopefully I can find some time to catch up there too!
First up is a very old piece of the old world which was a premade piece of terrain for the old world of fantasy battles. it was primed grey with static grass and until last week still in the poly bag!

I hit it liberally with contrast paints of earth, grey, purple and green tones with some blue and red.

After the contrast paints dried, I had some rainbow coloured flagstones and some interesting headstones. I used a creamy tan craft paint to drybrush everything up into some nice highlights.

After dry brushing I used army painter speed paints as a wash in a few areas. Green, brown, blue , and black for tonal shifts in the dirt and add streaks and weathering to the stonework of the cemetery.

there was a lot of nice textures in the base and the stones and the wash helped punch up the weathering of soot and standing water. I used pva glue to give water effects to the bucket and barrel, but that is still opaque white and still drying after two days....

l
Last year I painted some sigmar fantasy marines...I am not quite sold on them, but the guys I go to Adepticon with want to game warcry. The Chaos band I wanted was not at the FLGS, but the Soulsworn Questors were.

They were built and primed while I was travelling around. Since I painted some Knights of Morr last challenge, I figured a group of questing paladins would be a good addition and settled a paint scheme for them. These devotees of Morr have come to the cemetery to see who has been disturbing the rest of Morr's children. I have no idea as to what these paladins can do on the table, but they do look the part for Paladins of Morr now.

The questor prime paladin has a lamp that must be quite important in her hands.

The purple cloaks are quite vibrant and look less weird in person, I do like that contrast purple though. Army painter black speed paint was used over chainmail to give a nice obsidian armor color to them.

The female orc was a 3d print sourced entirely to practice painting skin and she does have a lot of skin!

I did a zenithal highlight and then used contrast paints with a catch.I used a purple on the black areas of her flesh and used yellow on the pure white places. When I was sure the paint was dry, I did my traditional painting of orc flesh with five different shades of green from a dark forest green to a yellow green.

The shadows really pop and the purple really helped.
she will be used for a cart ride to the gift shop for the white scar legion marine.
He is substantially smaller than the HH miniatures, but I do like the design cues that made it into the more recent master of signals.

I may not get more of the White Scars completed as time is running down and work and military seem intent on keeping me traveling for a bit longer...and checking on my kids.

so final tally.....
soulsworn questors 6 @ 5 points each for 30 plus 3 skulls
a lady orc barbarian for 5 points plus 20 for Lady Sarah's Cart.
cemetery for 10 plus 27 skulls
white scar rogue trader master of signals-5 points
20 points for fantasy book section and another 20 for the gift shop
110 points

duel tracker
legion duel- not good and unchanged!
stompy robots of death- 4
skulls-159 plus 30 for 189

That's a classic piece of Warhammer Fantasy Battle terrain you have there David, good on you for getting it done. Try finding another one! The paladins of Morr look nice too but they'd have to really curl up to fit into those graves... scale creep in a big way. What I really like is the White Scars Rogue-Trader Space Marine. "Comms Officer Orinoco" and his Blackberry Playbook are unmistakable from the old Citadel catalogs. Well done!

110 points for you.

From ChrisW: Fantasy Ent from LoTR/spirit and Chinese animated statues (Fantasy) (177 points)

So I have had a bit of a week this week, in a good way. A few items wound up being finished off at roughly the same time, as a result this week may become something of a points bomb...

First up an out and out fantasy entry. As seems to be the case with me, all to often, I have no idea why I bought this figure, nor do I even know what it is. To my mind it is some sort of LoTR Ent or possibly even a woodland spirit. It is another Bones figure. It was a fun item to paint. After priming it I used some contrast paints to lay down some base colours then went at it with some conventional paints.

I do not remember if size matters for points, but here is a comparison shot

Another fantasy/pulp entry are these animated Terracotta warriors and some spawning points.

  • 6x 28mm dogs
  • 24x animated terracotta warriors

The soldiers are from Eureka but I fear that I cannot remember were the Foo Dogs came from. The soldiers are just normal figures with a clay coloured paint job. I did make a few cuts into the miniatures with a hobby knife to try and represent cracking clay, with mixed results. They were primed with rattle can khaki then dry brushed with some tan craft paints. Then I opened up some pots of Agrax, Nuln, Carroburg crimson and Contrast Garaghax sewer and liberally spread and mixed them over the figures, daubing up any excess when required. I final dry brush of Craft gray paint and they were essentially done. I might go back and do some red eyes, at least on the leader type figures, but I have not yet decided.

I plan use these figures in a Pulp Alley scenario and spawning points were going to be required. Thankfully I had 6 statues lying around that would fit the bill.

Like the warriors I wanted to keep the idea that these are just statues (albeit oddly coloured statues) so I kept the colours simple. However I did add red eyes to the miniatures and a glowing blue ball of magic energy.

So the totals

  • 120 points for 24x 28mm warriors (5 points each)
  •   30 points for   6x 28mm statues
  •   7 points for large 28mm Ent/woodland spirit
  •   20 points for the Fantasy section bonus

Total of 177 points

Squirrels this post +2

Squirrels to date [10]

  • Hammers Slammers
  • Ikwen alien infantry
  • Hanuman (Alien) vehicles
  • New Swabian league armoured vehicles
  • Rats
  • Scarabs
  • Mercenary Sci-fi vehicle
  • NAC Sci-fi vehicles
  • Foo dog statues
  • Terracotta warriors
Some interesting variety here Chris, great stuff. I like the Big Ent in particular, it has a real LotR feel as you note. I've awarded 40mm points for him (it?). The terracotta dudes are also very cool, I like the clay effect you've achieved on them - and the fact that the weapons are painted in a lifelike fashion adds some interest and verisimilitude too.

177 points for your tally!

From SanderS and ArthurS: Fantasy in the Library, Dungeons and Dragons! (50 and 35 points)

 Hoi,

You might have noticed Arthur and myself have been lacking in posts lately.  We were both down with a serious flu for a couple of weeks but are doing fine now. Since we are also having a holiday at the moment we partook in a little "Father and Son"project.  As Arthur is heavily involved in Dungeons and Dragons lately, we thought that would be a great subject for the Fantasy Department in the Library. Arthur has decided he will not be entering the Library this Challenge but agreed to tag along on my journey along its long and bookfilled corridors.

These figures have been in my collection for quite some time, I can't remember the producer but they are adult versions of the kids that accidentally enter the World of Dungeons and Dragons in the 80's cartoon. Said cartoon is my only real link with DnD apart from playing 2 games with Arthur, but he is now re-watching it and I decided to buy him a 3D printed set of the actually cartoon characters from Etsy.
And so we decided to paint up two versions of the fellowship, one of the young kids painted up by the Young One himself and one of the grown-up fellowship painted by the Old Fart himself.

My grown up version of the team:

Arthur's young/ original; version, Arthur's fellowship also includes Uni the unicorn.:

A series of comparison shots:

Pointswise, Arthur has painted up 7 miniatures in 28mm so he should be getting 35 points added to his tally.

Now I have painted a miniature less, since Uni is depicted on the shoulder of Bobby in my grown-up version, but I do get the Library bonus of 20 points along with the 30 for 6 miniatures in 28mm.

Cheers Sander

Sylvain: What a great "Young One" - "Old Fart" project! This is so well thought of with the two identical-except-for-the-age felloewships. Both participants are demonstrating a complete mastery of their brush work. Three thumbs up! (Wait, where does that third one comes from...)

Note for TeemuL: I took care of entering ArthurS' points on 2/12/24.
