From MarkB: Grotbags Greenskins for the Snow Lord's Challenge

It’s been pretty testing as a teacher this week so it has been good to escape for an hour every night behind a paint brush to unwind. The Snow Lord has demanded a unit of Orcs for the final challenge. It’s hardly a huge unit... but in WFB 3rd edition you needed a minimum of five figures in a unit and I’m afraid with fairly unprecedented challenges this week that’s all I’ve managed.

So I introduce Grotbag’s green skins. Grotbags is a classic Citadel figure from the 1980’s from Ugezogs death commandos box set. She is a Half- Orc witch. I tried to give her a fleshy green colour. She came out greener than expected - hence her name Grotbags! British readers of a certain age will recognise this as the name of Rid Hull and Emu’s arch nemesis from 1980s kids tv!

She is supported by her bodyguard of classic plastic Orc figures. These are more of the classic Warhammer Regiments plastic Orcs. This time I’ve swapped some of their heads for some old Space Orc ones. The drummer is a metal figure dropping a fat beat on his goblin hide drum!

I did have her pet painted too. Again an old school 1980s Manticore that she has binded to her with her diabolical magic! This was rather fun to paint and will create a fearsome weapon to terrify her enemies!

I guess it’s my last post of the challenge. It’s been huge fun! Thanks to Curt and all the minions for being such great hosts. A pity I can’t count Grotbags as a Sarah’s balloon ride as well as this would be my frequent flyer!

So that’s 5 x 28mm figures = 25 points
1 x Manticore = 10 points?
Snow Lords Challenge = 30 points
Total = 65 points

Ahh, this is just terrific, Mark! I know I'm dating myself here, but I fondly remember these figures from thumbing though White Dwarf in the mid 80s. Brilliant stuff. The head swaps are excellent - I especially like addition of the manticore pet (yeeash - I wouldn't want to pick up after that!) and the greenskin with the rusted horned helmet - a very Frazetta-esque look that! I hope this group provides a good (bad?) basis for a larger unit down the road.

As to your prize, I'm delighted to award you with Noel's wonderfully creepy but nattily dressed Nosferatu vampire.

Great work Mark! Thanks very much for taking on the challenge of Snow Lord's Peak and for participating in this year's Challenge. I hope we see you back for the next edition.

From RossM - 15mm Wars of the Roses (156 points)

Final post for this year's challenge sees the completion of a DBA army in 15mm.

The Wars of the Roses DBA 2.0 army in 15mm from Gladiator Miniatures without options comprising of 1 element of Knights, 4 elements of Blades, 6 elements of Bows and 1 Art.

An element of hand gunners has snuck in to the picture taking the force beyond the 12 elements for the army,

The flags are from Citadel Six and are self adhesive that I placed on thin paper before gluing in place on the lances. The colours are for Buckingham's retinue and somewhere safe there are also some for Oxford's retinue.

Buckingham's Retinue

Oxford's Retinue - sorry for lousy pic

An additional elements of cavalry, Light Artillery and spearmen for the continuation of this army into a 200 point ADLG force.

Additional Knights and Cavalry elements beside Buckingham's mounted Knights.

The first of three command stands for the ADLG army using up the odd figures here and there.

This completes my Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge X for 2019-20 and I am pleased with the figures painted and the different styles of painting used and results achieved.

The points so far

9 x 15mm Cavalry - 36 points
55 x 15mm Infantry - 110 points
2 x 15mm Artillery - 8 points

Giving a total of 154 points for this army.

The running total

594 points or 118.9 % of the Challenge total achieved!

Cheers for now

This ia a fine way to complete your challenge. This is a lovely looking army and there will be a flag bonus, just to bugger up your maths

From RossM - 15mm, 20mm and 28mm figures - (96 points)

A mixed bag here showing the varied projects that are nearly always on the painting table in some way or another.

First up are 5 Arab swordsmen in 15mm, the manufacturer is unknown although recon it to be Minifigs. One of these was painted prior to the start of the Challenge no idea which one it is now

Next up are support elements in 20mm for the D.A.K that where started at the beginning of the challenge. With no real crewed weapons here these count as infantry figures only.

Now there are a few different 28mm figures. Greek skirmishers from Wargames Foundry for Mortal Gods and a piece of scatter terrain from Grand Manner for the same.

A Moor command stand for ADLG in 28mm. The standard bearer and command figure have been painted to join the religious type on this stand. The figures are from Gripping Beast and there will be more from this range on my blog later this year. The flag originally had a green trim and green triangles on the inner panels however, as red and green should never be seen this was over painted in a muted red to fit better with the colours on the figures.

Some armies are just never finished and the Late Romans would be that one for me. These figures from Gripping Beast have been gathering dust since being prepped for last year's Challenge and never made the painting line. Well that has now been rectified and all that is needed now is a game for them to be used in.

The scores so far

5 x 15mm infantry - 10 points
6 x 20mm infantry - 24 points
11 x 28mm infantry - 55 points
1 scenery piece (1.5" radius and 1.5" tall - 10.6 cubic inch or 5% of the 6" cube) - 4 points

The running total

440 points - 88% of the Challenge total

This is beautiful and eclectic submission. Loving the basing and the pile of pots is worth more than 4

From PaulSS - Rebel Commandos 55pts

More Star Wars: Legion again this post with a group of Rebel Commandos and some more battlefield accessories from the Priority Supplies set.

I painted the previous Rebel Troopers with a consistent palette, but using the colours in different places. For the Commandos I wanted them more uniform so they all have the same tunic, the same trousers, etc. and although they have camouflage smocks I used a consistent pattern on them with all done in large amoebas of German Camo Beige and Chocolate Brown on a base of Russian Uniform.

I finished off the camouflage smocks by outlining each amoeba in black rather like the scheme used on early WWII French tanks.

I did a couple of Vaporators earlier this month and in this session added another one along with a Comms Station from the pack.

I think that simple additions like these to our battlefields will make them more set in the Star Wars universe.

Some close-ups of the Commandos.

The Mon Calamari with the DH-447 sniper rifle is a lovely model, although I notice that the barrel is quite badly bent upwards in this shot. While writing this blog post I had a cup of tea and while it was still hot dipped the offending article in the tea and bent it back into shape, one of the advantages of these soft plastic figures.

I do like this female commander that comes in the set, the pony-tail handing down her back is a nice touch, but I'm not entirely sure that it's practical for the battlefield.

The Dressellian Commando is rather lovely, I misread the race on Wookiepedia though and Dressalians are supposed to have tan coloured skin, mine is pink, I like how it came out though.

He does sport a rather fetching eye patch!

Last model of mine to get a showcase is the Proton Charge Saboteur, priming his charges and ready to cause chaos and destruction.

I've probably gone a bit overboard on this project, looking at the rules a standard game is 800 points. I did a quick tot-up the other evening and without upgrades I'm well over that already.

Victoria has also been painting and has finished this rather splendid R4 unit that I thought I should share with you all.

Seven 40mm figures plus the Vaporator and Comms Link should add 55 points to my total.

I hope to complete another post for the challenge by close of the challenge on Friday evening.

I have really loved your Star Wars entries. These are cracking.

From Barks: Blackstone explorers (22 points)

I've been in isolation this week, waiting on a swab result which hopefully will come through today. I've used my time to attack these Blackstone Fortress explorers. I got started in December, but lost a bit of oomph as I was distracted by other projects and couldn't come up with satisfying schemes. But here we are:

Crusaders are, I think, nobles on religious quests. I would have preferred a more dynamic combat pose, since his role is to get into the thick of it and soak up damage.

Crusader

This lady is a sanctioned psyker. Cool pose and lovely details, but she failed to spark joy. I might use her on my next expedition and see if my opinion changes.

Sanctioned psyker

X-101 is a weapons servitor. A lobotomised cybernetic slave, I went through so many colours for his cables before settling on all green! Now he's a combat pumpkin.

X-101

This guy is easily my favourite- a technoarchaeologist. He's got all these great steampunk brass bits and I really enjoyed painting him- so much so, I had to stop myself from looking at a Adeptus Mechanicus Kill Team! Maybe later.

Technoarchaeologist

This will be my last skull-containing post, so here's what I've painted for the winner of the Skully McSkullface side duel (whoever he or she may be): a servoskull of your own. Paul, please stay exactly where you are as we have detected increased levels of heresy and the Inquisition is coming to assist you.

4x28mm 20 points
1x servoskull 2 points

Skull-o-meter™: 17
Cumulative skullz: 200

Hope you get the all clear. As a minion you have worked out what a post is about before opening. Not this one. That 1st photo took me by surprise. These are absolutely brilliant, especially the Santa figure.
