From TomC: Black Templars Marshal (Overdue and Returns) (25 points)

Hi again gang, already behind schedule so am very grateful to my fellow Wednesday warriors for being able to do things in a reasonable manner! It is however on theme of me for today's library location of choice, the overdue and returns section...

This particular miniature has alternately been on my desk and in my painting drawer for over two years now, indeed I had included him in a post-Challenge public pledge of miniatures to complete before this Challenge (having failed to finish it prior to AHPC XIII...).

He is, for the record, a Games Workshop Black Templars Marshal and I originally acquired him on a nostalgia kick, having previously painted his previous (and substantially smaller) metal incarnation when I was a bright-eyed youth.

In painting him, I have been reminded of an adage I heard second-hand, about academia, which is that a good thesis is finished, a great thesis is published and a perfect thesis is neither. I am my own worst enemy and even though I can still see plenty to work on (not least the base rim, which I always seem to forget in excitement as completion draws near), it is time to move on, I have a points target to try and hit!

The actual painting, owes inspiration to a variety of sources, in particular to Maxime Corbeil's great featured army, Richard Gray's gold NMM guide, Sergey Gybin's steel NMM guide and Stahly's OSL tutorial (which I have not tried before). All issues in execution are, as always, my own!

In terms of points, my understanding is that Primaris marines fall into the 28mm weight class and so our amigo comes in at 5 points, who, being dismally behind being ready for AHPC XIII, is hopefully also worth an additional 20 points in the Overdue and Returns section.

Hi Tom - some fantastic brushwork on this "modern" take on a classic Warhammer 40k figure. Many GW fellow-travellers will surely recognize this fellow, even if he is updated to "Primaris" size, kitted out with a snazzy volkite weapon, he still presents the familiar chains, carries the scary axe (as one does), and refuses to wear a full helmet, because who needs a helmet when one has faith in The Emperor?

You variety of techniques has certainly payed dividends, as this fellow turned out great! The only thing more impressive is your accounting technique, as you have managed to top DaveD by posting a submission with a painting-points-to-bonus-points ratio of 1 to 4...watch out for those crocodiles!

Keep up the great brushwork - 25 points for you!

From Dave D - 1st Chasseurs of the Guard (102 points)

My friend Gerry is a wargamer with a megalomania complex . He has around 100,000 10mm Napoleonic figures already . I am helping him top that up this year and here is the first of them off the production line

It’s the 1st Battallion of Old Guard Chasseurs a Pied . It’s 99 foot figures and 1 mounted . 60x40 base with 25 figures per base . 4 bases per battalion .

The figures are all Pendraken . Only another 7 lots to paint for this division .

So that’s also 101 pts for the little things and Napoleonic duels. (Editor's note - the spreadsheet tells me this is actually 102 points...so there you go...)

Just so you know what a lot of 10mm on a table looks like here it is  it’s epic

The game MartinC and I are playing in this week - Waterloo

Well Dave, after years of witnessing the scale of your own hobby project efforts throughout various editions of the AHPC, I am inclined to suspect that "your friend Gerry" is in fact just one of your own made-up cover identities...but nobody can argue that the visual impact of such games is indeed "epic" - in the true sense of that word, not in the stupid Warlord-Games-Epic-Scale sense. Great work on these figures, as Pendraken indeed do have a range of fantastic sculpts.

Enjoy that Waterloo Game!

From BrianC: Greeks, scatter terrain, and Bolt Action (100 points)

Alrighty, I didn't get much done. But, this is what I have. Warlord Games Greeks, Bolt Action Universal Carrier from my new British & Canadian Army Starter Box and 3D printed scatter terrain.

I managed to draw a 6" x 6" square as stated in the rules. I hope this works. The 4 big yellow blobs are haystacks from the 1700s & 1800's. In the bottom right corner are 2 3D-printed trees. Then we have 2 3D-printed treasure chests, and next to them is a stone archway and a 3D-printed column. I don't think there is a "topic" for the terrain to be placed in the library.

Next, are the Greeks! There will be plenty more in the future. I'm almost done with the Warlord Games Greek Starter Army. Here, I have 8 Hoplites. I'm not sure if the colors are what they were back then.

I learned to add the decals before gluing them on the minis. Ha!

I really had a blast painting and weathering the Universal Carrier!
I added the Universal Carrier to the "new acquisition" topic.

3 Soldiers have a full body. The driver is a half-body miniature. Do they get separate points? Or are they included with vehicle points? I'll let ya decide on that. I'm a newbie to this challenge. Ha! I didn't take advantage of the library cart this time. But, I will on the next turn-in. Take Care.

Take Care all.

Another post from a new participant in the AHPC! On behalf of the benevolent tyrant known as the Snow Lord and his Council of Loyal Minions, I extend a hearty welcome! And you have provided us with a lovely assortment of different projects - and I am always impressed by those who manage to ever paint any terrain of any kind...

You have pretty much nailed your scoring projection - although I will gently suggest that in the future you share your calculations without any graphic formatting (which I had to remove from this draft post) and that you ensure the text in your submission is "left aligned" (which I edited where I could).

100 points for you!

KenR : Machine Guns for the Pope (New Aquistions) (50 points)

It's been a bit of a week an here is my third entry. I found out about the Papal Machine Gun in my Podcast chat with Nick Schofield about the Papal Zouaves, I picked the figures up at the last show I attended hence the New Aquistion claim).

The weapon was called a Claxton Gun and unsurprisingly no one makes one, in fact finding pictures of it was hard enough. There is an example in a museum in Belgium but sadly they didn't reply to my enquiries. It had a really interesting firing mechanism (for an engineer anyway 😁) the Gun fired by a lever at the back of the gun being rocked from side to side, which fired two adjacent barrels one after the other. This was done until the barrels started to over heat at which point the Gun was manually rotated to the next two barrels lined up and firing began again. Obviously it wasn't very successful as no one has heard of it !

I've used the Perrys French Mitralleurs Gun model as my base, perfect as the Papal Crew had exactly the same uniform as the French (bar the cap and belt badges). So to Claxton up the Gun, I've added a 6 holed end to the barrel with green stuff, a shield made of plastic card and the rocker firing mechanism from an old bit of sprue. I have to say it's not perfect but I'm well pleased with it.

So points wise there are 4 28mm crew figs at 5 points each with 10 points for the gun and 20 for the Library section, a grand total of 50.  It's been a busy week and I'm maxing out my points whilst I have time as I know the back end of the Challenge I will be busier at work. Next week expect more Garibaldi, I might even finish them.

Nothing gets my Catholic attention like the title "Machine Guns for the Pope"! Great work here as usual Ken, and it is particularly fun to read about just how whacky and impractical these early versions of machine guns were, before evolving into the chillingly lethal battlefield tools of the 20th century. The description of the mechanism of this thing sounds just about like something Wile E. Coyote might have devised as part of his futile quest to "get" the elusive Roadrunner...

50 points to your total, we look forward to more!

From - ShawnD 28MM Forest Troll gunners (30 Points)

First post and first painted mini!  Here are my 28MM Mantic Forest Troll Gunners!  Any advice is appreciated.

I know the army painter grey is making my paint darker than I want.  I think this is 30 points but unsure.

Hello and welcome to the Analogue Hobbies Painting Challenge, Shawn! As your brutal, totalitarian Minion it falls to me to share a few bits of feedback:

- Great painting! But don't hesitate to share a few more words...some of us are wordier than others, and not all of us love the typing-and-sharing, but a big part of the fun is learning/sharing/ranting...were these hard to paint? Easy? Are they part of a long term project, or a spur of the moment thing, or a club effort...did you love or hate the models - or maybe both? Feel free to share :)

- Remember not to hit "publish"; your Minion will take care of that part...

As for scoring, it looks like we have three based figures, but these are large 28mm fellows, with"regular" 28mm fellows hitching a ride (as one apparently does with Forest Trolls...?). Let's count the trolls in this instance as "cavalry", which will indeed bring you to 30 points.

Welcome again, and be sure to reach out with any questions!

From JP - From Highland to Lowland (75 Points)

So, I finished the last 6 Gordons for the Northwest Frontier, they were a bit easier as I focused on the feel rather than detail for the tartans. Thank you all for the advice, mucho appreciated.

If you're wondering why I painted 11 Gordons, it's because the piper will be purloined to accompany the army CinC.

As I sat there getting ready to paint Pathans next, my sights fell on a wooden box holding STL resin figures, a gift from my son-in-law at Christmas for my Border Reiver project. They are  by Flags of War and though I prefer metals, the temptation to assemble some of these was stronger than my willpower could resist... so many options to create with these fellows!

So... from Pathans to Borderers... hmmm

Points - trying to get this one right...

10 x 28mm figures    50 points
New Acquisitions      20 points

Total                          70 points

So, that's about it for now!

More NWF goodness, wearing kilts, no less! Excellent brushwork here once more JP. Reading your submission, I am certain many Challengers will a) appreciate the brushwork on those fantastic highlanders, and b) sympathize with your stated preference for metal figures, even as the 3D printed options continue to improve by leaps and bounds and c) recognize that "squirrel" feeling of suddenly hopping to another project!

You absolutely nailed the scoring, but I will arbitrarily add five bonus points because I love highlanders, and you should have some extra pay-off after the Tartan Torture getting that lot finished.

KenR : 28mm Bolognesi Garibaldi (121 points)

The remaining Infantry for the Garibaldi Project are random units I picked from the army to add a bit of colour to the force and something a bit different to paint after a sea of red.

I've used the Perrys Plastic ACW boxes to make up this unit, the uniforms aren't a million miles away and you're not exactly falling over yourself for choice in this period ! Same as my previous units 24 x 28mm figures at 5 points each plus a flag to give me another 121 points.

The Battalion was made up of about 300 Bolognese who arrived from the North of Italy with the Medici Brigade to support Garibaldi. At the end of September 1860 occupied the town of Caiazzo on the Volturno by ejecting the Bourbon forces that garrisoned it. The Vacchieri regiment arrived as reinforcement, but the following day the Bourbons counterattacked with superior forces and defeated the Garibaldini, recapturing the town.

So it's a busy week, I'm posting this on Monday and there's likely to be a third entry this week, when the painting cow is producing, milk it!

Ah, the elusive "painting cow"...Ken you are, as ever, a veritable dairy's worth of painting from said cow, as the Garibaldi project continues to move forward. Your rate of painting implies quick work, but you nonetheless continue to impress with your level of consistent quality on the figures. I also love the deep bases, and regret not doing something similar for my 28mm Franco-Prussian War project...

Another 121 points for you, and we stay tuned for the next latte's worth of production from the magical painting cow...

From DaveD - Ghurkas & the Crocs (85pts)

I am away this week playing Waterloo with MartinC for 4 days with 1000’s of 10mm figures so it’s only a short entry .

First up is the start of my Ghurka force to add to my existing Indian Army . These lads will do service in the NWF as they did historically (History Bonus !)and will also be deployed to the Sudan this summer in the planned big game. While they didn’t actually deploy there, other Indian army units did so I think it’s feasible to imagine a possible deployment, and they will bring a nice splash of green with them .

The figures are from the Perrys "Victoria's Little Wars "range . They are a clean unfussy design so are nice and simple to paint in that classic rifle green - these 6 are just the first recruit's the rest of their comrades will be along in due course .  Their Pathan opponents for the NWF have just turned up from Old Glory - as this has turned into the “let’s start a new project during the challenge “ thing..

6 x 28mm = 30

Bonus fur Historical location = 20

Next up sees the Crocodiles … they will do for a range of nastiness in river scenarios of course . Plus of course one may have eaten a “clock” and is now “Tik-Tok” from that childrens book “Peter Pan”. I think IIRC they were from Foundry .I have left them basing free for now as they may be in a range of locations

They are big castings being around 70mm long ! Nasty , nasty! Of course Crocs can run around 15-20 mph .. over a short distance . Of course you don’t need to outrun it .. just the gamer you are with …over to you MartinC 😂😂

3 x 28mm Crocs = 15

Location bonus = 20

Splendid painting as usual Dave, and as I am working on my own NWF project, I can't wait to see your work, as it will be excellent inspiration for my own ongoing efforts. The whole "let's start a new project during the Challenge" is a sentiment a great many of us can relate to, well done.

As for the animals, whatever carnivorous ferocity they might summon, surely even they cannot manage to eke out a bonus-point-to-painted-figure ratio you have seemed to manage here....85 points it is...

Enjoy the Waterloo game!

KenR : 28mm Garibaldi Guides - Overdue (80 points)

A nice easy extra 20 points on these Cavalry, I prepped this right at the start of my Garibaldi journey 2 years ago and they have sat in a box whilst the Infantry has been done so it was something I had to come back to.

Cavalry was a real rarity in Garibaldis army but this unit of "Guides" remained with him throughout the Risorgimento. They were a small unit, only 50 strong at Mentana and were primarily used for scouting and communication. However its an excuse to have some Cavalry to go with my Redshirts.

The unit has been painted in its early Red with black facings uniform, by Mentana it had changed to a rather dull grey outfit so I went for the more flamboyant look. The figures are Perrys ACW plastic Cavalry which at the time of purchase where the closest match I could find. It's meant painting some detail, like the lace on the chests but that's been half the joy of this project.

So points wise this unit is 6 x 28mm Horse at 10 points each plus the 20 pt Library bonus giving me 80 points.

As I'm posting this up as ready for Wednesday the previous Friday I would expect to have one or maybe 2 further posts for this week. I've started the Challenge with my painting mojo on fire so I'm driving it as fast as I can !

***

A group of light cavalry? What could that possibly be a sign of? Surely there is no sort of "Yarkshire Painting Juggernaut" looming on the Wednesday horizon...who would believe such a thing...

Great work as always Ken. "So I went for the more flamboyant look." F*ck yeah, you did! That is the point of the hobby, right?

80 points for you sir!
