From AaronH - Star Wars Imperials x 13 (65 points)

This week I managed to finish 12 Imperial Snow Troopers and 1 Imperial Officer for Star Wars Legion. I'm waaaay behind this year as my work decided that I needed to travel for the last two months. As you'll see at the end, I have not made a lot of progress against my goal this year.

First off are 12 Snow Troopers. These are a mix of the official, soft, bend, terrible official sculpts and 3D prints.

The three in the center are official sculpts. The guy on the left, being all dynamic and stuff, is a 3D print from Squamous.

The rear view. These are set to get new hard plastic sculpts in the next few weeks. The new releases have been great, so I'm looking forward to the replacements.

The two heavy weapons. You can see that the Ion gun on the left has a bit of barrel lift.

Next up is an imperial officer. She is the old, soft plastic and is, colloquially known as Becky. I have no idea why.

She stands up pretty well until you get to her face. The detail is very soft there.

I was aiming for a more grey-green. I can see it in my minds-eye but I just couldn't pull it off on the model.

She and six of the Snows are for Rhys to take to Adepticon in two weeks, where we'll be playing in the World's tournament.

That's 13x5 32mm models for 65 points.

Very nice work here Aaron, the Snowtroopers look ace. The ones with heavy weapons look suitably scary. I also like the subtle colour difference between the armour and the capes/cloth. I also quite like your officer. I suspect you were going for a bit more field-grey look here, that's how I've painted some of my Imperial officers. If that's the case might I recommend Vallejo German Uniform?

In any case it's 65 points for you!

From AaronH - Iden Versio and two Orc APCs (17 points)

This week I'm finally getting some painting done after travelling for the last two months. I have Iden Versio in 32mm and two Marauder (Orc) APCs in 10mm.

I painted Iden up for my friend's son so he could use her in a tournament last weekend. She was a quick paint, being mostly black.

I just dry brushed a couple of different grey's over the black undercoat. Her face took the most time.

I had already painted her droid so it's not included here. I still need to paint the other members of Inferno Squad, which may happen this Challenge.

The trucks look like she's playing with Tonka trucks.

The two APCs are Mules, the ubiquitous transport in Mantic's Warpath universe, being in at least three armies.

I have six of these. I'll be doing two each in yellow, blue and red.

They are quick and easy to paint up. I used acrylic paint pens to do most of what you see.

I'm not sure why this is Mantic's vision for an APC but horses for courses I guess.

This is one 32mm figure for 5 points

Two 10mm vehicles for 6 pts each = 12

Total = 17 pts

Nice work here Aaron, I was unfamiliar with Ms. Versio so you sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole there. A pretty intense character, she was the leader of an Imperial black ops unit called "Inferno Squad" (!) and holder of the Imperial record for most verified kills in battle (!!) (I thought surely this would've been the Death Star gunner who pulled the trigger on Alderaan??) before she defected to the Rebellion. You've done a great job on her, especially the face... the sculpt is great too, it really looks like the actress who played her.

Seventeen for your tally!

AaronH - Imperial Storm Troopers (60 Points)

This year I'm going to try to get through my nemesis, Storm Troopers. I've been collecting Star Wars Legion since it came out, six or seven years ago. I've painted a fair few models for it but I've always been intimidated by the Storm Troopers (and Scouts and Snows). As an aside, I only play this game with painted models. It forces me to paint up models I want to use. So no Empire up to now.

The tray of potential, waiting for the Challenge start. This is approximately 135 war dollies.

I assembled and primed everything and laid it out to be ready for the Challenge. I've found other bits since this picture and added them to the tray.

Storm Trooper wash on the left. Fresh off the factory on the right.

I started with a flat white prime. I then cleaned up the spots I did a bad job of priming with more white. I then hit these guys in a batch manner. 12 models. 12 sets of lenses, then 12 lines above the lenses, then 12 mouth snouts, then 12 weapons. I had to do the black undersuits one at a time since every model is different. I then dry brushed gun metal on the guns and put some sombre grey on the high points of the black. I touched up everything with another bit if white and then everyone got washed in storm trooper wash. As you can see in the picture above it knocks back the white, emphasizes the details and makes the armor look more lived in. I really like the affect.

The 12 man unit. I have 3 heavy weapons in here, as well as the optional five man upgrade.

The back shot.

And now the closer ones in focus.

In Star Wars Legion you get a base unit of four dudes that you can then add on weapons and specialists to, getting you up to a potential unit size of 10. There's one more heavy weapon that I don't have a model of, so is not included.

This is 12 x 32mm infantry models = 60 points.

Welcome back to the Challenge, Aaron!

It looks like you have a veritable battalion of Stormtroopers ahead of you, and what better way to work through them than the Challenge! I quite like the final result that you've achieved, with these looking like hard campaigners with little time to keep their armour white and shiny. Question: What do you use for your 'Stormtrooper Wash'? I'm sure there are a few of us that would be keen to compare notes. :)

This large squad of 12 will give you 60 points for your climb up the points ladder. Well done!

From SanderS: More Old World stuff... (170 points)

 Hoi,

The Old World is pretty much my main focus this Challenge as I have predicted at the start. While I am beavering away on my own armies (Brettonians, Dwarfs, Middenheim and Dogs of War) and my Mordheim project, I have also accepted another commission for an Orc and Goblin army.

The first unit for this army is the one you see down below. Personally I love Night Goblins and these newish models are great to work with. The owner has asked me to give each unit one distinctive colour accent to recognize what models go in what unit, as you can see this unit's spot colour is red.

Now in order to get these done asap I used a lot of tricks learned from this tutorial which I can not reckommend enough:

Yes yes, I know technically she has more or less slapchopped the figures, but hey it works great!

For my own Middenheim army I have been painting these handgunners and I really like the way they turned out.

The blue is far lighter than is usual for Middenheimers but I like it a lot and I will stick with this for most of my more regular Middenheim units. When painting these I took some tricks from this tutorial and I can also assure you it is very helpfull!

Again, working out the points is not hard on this on: 34 x 5 is 170 points so that means I am well past my 1000 points target for this Challenge and I am very very happy with that, since I did not succeed in scoring my goal for the last 2 Challenges.

Cheers Sander

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Congratulations on beating your Challenge Goal! Your Old World stuff looks great and the colour choices are aces! The minis look very vibrant and will be fun on the game table

170 points for you

Cheers

From Curt: 10mm Pistoliers for Warhammer Fantasy (III of VII) (48 Points)

Thank you Peter for letting me under the red lanyard and muck in with the rest of your Monday crew. Also, hats off to you for once again serving as a faithful minion to this barely organized madness that we call The Challenge. I forever enjoy your clever pulp posters and Tuesday greetings, and you always have something thoughtful to say to each of your charges (and sometimes its even nice and helpful). ;) Thanks again mate, you were terrific.

Okay, this post number three to my ever-expanding Empire army. Today we have a regiment of Pistoliers trotting into line as reinforcements.

These guys are basically the Warhammer equivalent of Renaissance 'Reiters'. Historially these chaps would use their heavy pistols to roll up and attempt to break up enemy formations, softening them up for the charge. Usually they would be in fairly tight, regimented formations called a 'caracole,' but these fellows are in a more flexible, skirmish formation.

Again, I put in a clump of trees for a bit of fun (and it saves me from filling the base with figures).

Aaand a gratuitous, as-it-stands-now, group shot of the force.

As to points, there are 16 of these Reiters in this unit, which should give me 48 points.

Thanks for popping in for a look. Maybe see you tomorrow with another reinforcement for the Empire!

- Curt

I do like these guys Curt, they have some added style to the normally utilitarian Reiter look.  Excellent basing and tree too.  I look forward to riding these guys into the dust on table.

Happy to Minion MONDAY for you Curt. My MONDAY crew is a great bunch who've produced some top shelf work and two Minions' Choice awards.  Nothing like that unruly bunch that Tamsin fails to control on Tuesday.

From JohnE - Scout Troopers on Speeder Bikes [Sci-Fi] (50 Points)

Hi all. Honored to be back for my second AHPC. Thanks to Curt for bringing me aboard for my second venture, and to Phil for working whatever magic he will have to do to finalize these posts. Also cheers to all the other participants and minions.

I'm starting this challenge with my first ever Star Wars figures. My family pleasantly surprised me at Christmas by gifting me a Legion starter set, so I feel obligated to at least try to finish the included miniatures. Applying the "rule of cool" I started with these speeder bikes. I'm glad I did, because I'm hoping that the rest of the box set won't be as frustrating.

Anyway, here's my Sci-Fi themed entry. Nothing special here - just acrylics with some washes and a weathering pencil.

Points Summary:

2 x 35mm mounted figure @ 10 points = 20 points 15 pints = 30 points

Sci-Fi (Green Pass) bonus = 20 points

Total = 40 points 50 points

Minion Phil: Welcome back to the Challenge John! Totally stoked to see the delights you've brought us this week, a top notch variety of stuff off your workbench. As you know, you faintly shamed me painting these up within a month of getting the Legion core set, while mine have sat sadly in great plastic in a box for four years or so. But it gave me a good incentive to get mine done too.

I love the classics take you have on these, and your dedication to getting just the right shade of brown on the bikes to be film accurate. The subtle weathering came out great. Love them, so what's next from that core set?

I like your backdrop too, your photos came out great.

From StuartL Around And Around We Go - From Noel's Comet to Vogsphere - 122 Points

Hello again,

This is my final post for this week and should see me completing the middle ring of the Challenge XII Quadrant. My last quadrant entry was for LV426, meaning that the next step on my journey is Noel's Comet, and the theme of friendship (and writing a LOT of words).

I didn't know Noel all that well, but I was sad to hear of his passing last year. We crossed brushes a few times in the Squirrel side duel, with me narrowly beating him in the first duel back in 2019, only for him to take the title in the second duel in 2021. He always struck me as a good humoured chap and it's a shame that I'll never have a chance to compete with him again. So, I gave my entry for this step on the challenge a bit of extra thought before I selected a mini. There are two parts to this story, so I beg your patience before we get to the mini itself.

Way back in the time-before-time (circa 1998), a friend of my younger brother was selling off his various GW collections. At the time, I was getting back into the hobby after a short hiatus and wanted to get going quickly. Picking up an already built army seemed the best way of doing so. So, I bought his Warhammer Fantasy Lizardmen and played a few games with them at my local GW store. (Middlesbrough, UK, if anyone cares). My brother's friend had already painted them in a rough and ready style, so I never saw a need to paint them myself. Moving on a few years, I emigrated to Japan, leaving my hobby collection behind. Over the years, I had my parents ship more and more of it over to me. By that time, I had bought several other armies and the Lizardmen ended up shoved into a box at the very bottom of the to-do pile. One of my friends in Japan wanted to make the move from 40K to WFB and asked if I had any minis I could part with cheaply, so I sold him the Lizardmen and he happily took them off my hands. Over time, he added some extra models to the army as well. At some point after that, he passed on the minis to someone else, using the money from the sale to but whatever the latest hotness was at the time. Shortly after this, GW decided that the Warhammer Fantasy game wasn't worth supporting and decided to blow up the setting and start a new system. The owner of the lizardmen, another friend of mine as it happened, tried a couple of games of Age of Sigmar and decided that it wasn't for them, selling the Lizardmen to me at the end of 2020 along with a lot of other minis. So, after over two decades, these models had had 5 owners and effectively 1 coat of paint in all that time. Last year I painted up some Skinks from the collection, but it went back to gathering dust for the most part.

The situation worldwide over the past couple of years has been truly dire and it has affected nearly every facet of our lives. Personally, I haven't been too put out by the various stay-at-home instructions as I am quite content to do hobby stuff by myself. One of my close friends however, hasn't been doing so well though. He runs a small teaching business and as you can probably imagine, Corona has been a massive headache to work around. Clients have cancelled classes, teachers have had to be trained to teach online, etc. My friend has always been a bit on the anxious side, and the stress from work, the worry about contracting the virus, the lack of real social activities and all the rest has not been good for him at all. To try to take his mind off things, whenever the case numbers have subsided, I have invited him to my place for some games and a chat. While my friend enjoys games, he has never been one for the complex rules or intricate strategies that I enjoy, he likes something simple where he can push his minis around the table, roll some dice and not have to think too much. In addition, he always liked the rank and file look of the old WFB setting and we got to talking about how GW may be bringing the old game back in some fashion. Neither of us really trust GW to do a good job and make rules that we both enjoy, and that got me thinking. I could probably knock together a set of rules that include the simplicity that my friend likes with the strategic planning that I enjoy. I spent a few weeks over the summer jotting down ideas, and once we had the opportunity I invited him over for a few games of my new system. It's not really my system, it is a rough mash up of Warlord's Hail Caesar, WFB 6th edition, the orders phase from the old Epic game by GW and other bits besides. At the time, I simply used card movement trays to push around some old WFB minis, but both my friend and I had a blast playing. The minis in question? My old Lizardmen.

So, as a set of models that have been passed from friend to friend for years and with the intention of playing a game to help my friend relax and feel less anxious, I present the first of my newly repainted Lizardmen.

The figure is a metal Saurus warrior from back in the late 90's. I wanted to do something different from the usual greens and blues I see used for Lizardmen, so I asked my friend to look at some pictures of real world lizards on google and pick a colour scheme for me. I wanted to steer clear of the usual metallic colours I use for weaponry and tried to paint the sword as a piece of sharpened jade, giving it a coat of gloss varnish to make it stand out.

And after all that explanation, I am kind of tired, so the rest of my middle ring journey will just be a couple of quick entries below.

Perelandra has a theme of oceanic, so I painted up a mermaid. The figure is from Reaper Bones and is pretty tall as it is mounted upon a large rock. The figure itself is about 40mm not including the scenic base. I chose bright blues and greens for the mermaid and orange and yellow for her clothing, making for a very colourful entry. The scales have been drybrushed with silver to give them a more piscine appearance.

The next stop on the tour is Coruscant, famed for it's Imperial nature. So for this I painted up some old Empire WFB minis. I painted a Mordheim warband a few years ago and simply copied the colour scheme for these guys. As Mordheim is a particularly gritty game, I chose fairly muted colours for the uniforms, with just a splash of bright red for visual appeal.

And finally, we have Vogsphere and it's bureaucracy. I'll admit that this one gave me pause, but I eventually found what I think is a suitable mini. Most people never see the bureaucrats that make the rules, they just have to deal with the paperwork they create. Usually some jobsworth has a list of rules that they make people follow with a perverse sense of power. So, official looking nobody with a long set of pointless instructions? That I can do, thanks to the masses of Reaper Bones minis I still have in my stash.

"All adventurers wishing to hunt down the dragon must wear a high-vis vest and flame retardant safety glasses at all times. No swords, spears or axes are permitted unless the owner has the prerequisite license obtained at least 3 weeks in advance, and no blade may be more than 20cm in length. Armour must conform to ISO-45001 safety standards. Finally, everyone must have their mandatory tetanus shots in case of dragon bites."

And that should finish off the middle ring and this post.

For my total, that is 1x 40mm mini and 7x 28mm minis for a total of 42 points. In addition I can add 4 challenge quadrant planets for a bonus of 80 points, bringing me up to 122 for the post.
Despite having a few GW minis here, there are no skulls. Weird.

Great story and great work on the old Lizardman Stuart  I like the scale tones that  you've used.  You are certainly rocketing around the rings here, so good on you for that.  I really like the bureaucrat figures with his hat and scroll, but I'm pretty sure that he's reading the instructions for the SPREADSHEET of DOOM.

From HerrRobert (Robert H): The Wizard's Steed (35 Points)

Next stop, Millsy's Millpond
You know the drill by now:
Paint one or more miniatures from prior to 2000, any genre, any scale. Bonus 10 points if the mini(s) are pre-1990 or bonus 20 points if pre-1980. Extra 10 points if you can provide a backstory on how and where you acquired the mini(s) e.g. I originally bought these to play original D&D back when I was a kid.
Gotthard Baer kicked his mount into a canter, then a gallop. En route from consulting with the Emperor and Patriarch in Altdorf, he needed both ultimate speed and discretion to reach the army of the northern frontier. Tilean mercenary pikemen were being recruited, to join the flower of the Imperial Knightly Orders and the black powder and steam tanks of the factories of Nuln, arsenals of Altdorf, and forges of every town between here and Kislev.

Gray wizards were masters of both stealth and disguise, and Baer was no different. Just a nondescript man on a nondescript mare, all cloaked in the gray of his order. He quietly galloped through the no name streets of this no name town, just another to be passed through to rendezvous with the gathering army.

Gotthard Baer is a Games Workshop Empire Gray Wizard, dating to 1996 or so. The Empire were my first Warhammer Army, and they remain some of the most beautiful sculpts that GW has done. I've begun Robertizing (reRobertizing?) the old figures, including kitbashing pikemen from the halbardiers. Baer was a new purchase for the Army. I've always been fond of gray wizards, especially their extra abilities to dispel magic!

Baer was originally planned to be part of Challenge Nine, or even Challenge Ate. I finished both him and his proposed steed then, only to discover that he didn't fit! Back to the drawing board. He say, unfinished, until this challenge, when I painted up a brand new steed and sat him upon it. Which, frankly, works much better for his sense of discretion than the Elven one I'd originally planned for him.

So, just another five points, but visiting Millsy's Millpond!

________________________

I agree, before the f*cktards at GW decided to blow up the Olde World the Empire had some of the best models in the biz. Ahh, but we have the Age of Sigmar now (golden shaft of light) so what do I know. I'll just go into the corner and continue rocking back and forth, shaking my fist and muttering at the walls.

This grey wizard is a great example of talented Robertizing. Well done!
