WiP Games and Miniatures

WiP Games and Miniatures

kitbashed Silver Shields.

and finally the terrifying Seleucid Scythed Chariot

1st Corps. Metal

so 18x 5  and 8x 5    and  ?  20 points for chariot  =   150 points.

From Millsy:

Super brushwork on these ancient fellows as always Steve!

When the Challenge is over it'd be great to see everything you have painted together, it's a sizable collection of beautifully painted stuff already and there's still a month to go.

The chariot is my pick of the crop it was a very hard decision. I've scored it as a vehicle but awarded 10 extra points for the additional horses and the reins, plus added the 5 points you missed for the driver. That brings your total up to 165 points this week.

Cracking work mate. Can't wait for the next installment of ancient goodness!

Cheers,
Millsy

JezT - Successor/Seleucid Command - 28mm (20 points)

Hi All

Just a quick post to keep the points ticking over. I actually painted these while watching the "SuperBowl" the other week- so was a late night here in the UK. Just got round to basing them now and the figures are not too bad in the light of day!

Not sure of manufacturers now - think the mounted commander is Gripping Beast but with mix and match horse. Are a few odd figures left over from previous Challenge painting session.

Will be useful to have a reserve Commander for any Basic Impetus games, and if one Commander loses a game they can readily be replaced - sounds like Premiership football?

So just a nice and simple 20 points for me please.

All the best Jez

Great little entry here Jez. And a reserve commander is always a good thing to have!
20 pts added for you

ScottR 28mm Selucid Phalanx for ADLG or Hail Caesar 24 figures (120 points)

Hi All,

Several years ago I started to amass a collection of Greek figures from Victrix.  Mainly because of a kickstarter for a skirmish game called Mortal Gods.  The game and all the miniatures have sat on my shelf for a couple of years now.  The exception was a greek Phalanx which i planned to build an actual Selucid Army from.  Thinking at the time it would be Hail Caesar.

I got as far as building the figures, and then undercoating them with wraithbone with the intent to try the new GW contrast colours.  I did a couple of test figures and was a bit mixed about the outcome.

Now a couple of years have passed and I am a bit more used to playing around with the contrast paints.  Talking with my good friend Dennis Campbell aka 'Matt varnish'  we discussed playing Hail Caesar.  Now I have my Celts but as I was searching around for the extra chariots I found this unit all ready to go.

So this was a start yesterday at around 10 am to paint and base the unit before I go away on a weeks holiday.

Mission accomplished. 30 hours plus sleep and house chores and the unit is done.  I would be interested in peoples thoughts on the results of using just contrast paints.  Oh except the leather strap across the chest for the shields.

Sorry about the pics as well.  I have a new light box and trying to work out the best background for pictures.  Black next or any recommendations.  I can go back to pictures on the gaming mat if this is better.  please let me know.

The unit is two stands.  Each stand is a 60 x 60mm.  One stand represents one unit in Art de La Guerre (ADLG).  Both stands would be used for one unit in Hail Caesar.  We use a standard of 60mm frontages for Hail caesar so we can also do ADLG.  The total is 24 figures with 12 figures in 4 man frontage and 3 deep per base.

Pictures using gaming mat background.

24 x 28mm figures for 120 points.

Happy New Year everyone and may our brushes be ever busy and your miniature pile ever diminishing!  See you in a week.

Oh wow, this beefy pike block looks fantastic, Scott! The blue tunics and shields are very eye-catching, and I really like the wood effect on the pikes.  Very impressive. As to photos, I'm always partial to a homogenous background so the subject stands out, but that is just my preference. The shots of them on terrain look excellent too.

Looking forward to your next entry!

From MilesR: 6mm Seleucid Army, part 1 (327.5 Points)

Despite a lack of updates for the challenge, there has been a bit of work going on at my painting desk.  I present to you my Seleucid army, part 1, in glorious 6mm scale.

Please accept my apologies for photographing these chaps on my messy painting desk but due to the ongoing repair work after the basement flood there just isn't any room.  These miniatures are from Baccus and are superb.

The heart of any Successor or Macedonian army is the Phalanx and my little Seleucid contingent is no exception.  12 bases with 32 pikemen each.  Half are advancing and half standing.

Baccus makes 2 different types of pikeman cast - one with a cast pike and one open handed where the pike is added on.  I opted for the latter and really like the look but it was very tedious to do.  I'm also a little worried that about tabletop mishaps but we shall find out later on.

I went to a hardware store and picked up a wire brush to serve as the source of the pikes for the mini's

I think they came out really well

I clipped a bunch of extra pikes, as I suspect there will be a lot of battlefield damage.

Supporting the Pike are 9 bases of Seleucid Agema or heavy cavalry and 5 generals.

on the other flank are 10 bases of Light cavalry and a single Ellephant.  There are more Ellies on order from Baccus.

In reserve are 3 bases of skirmishers, 2 bases of Hoplites and 2 bases of Archers.

There are a good number of other types of supporting infantry to be painted up - include some imitation Legionnaires.  It's unlikely those will get done for this Challenge.

There are also enough standing pike figures for 6 additional pike bases but I'm pretty sure I just cant stomach clipping and gluing on the pikes

Total figures for this entry are:
472 infantry for 236 points,
89 mounted for 89 points and
1 Ellie for 3.5 (scored as a vehicle plus 3 figures)
Total Points: 327.5
