From ReillyOG: Spider-riffic!(187 points)

Its been a hot minute since my last entry but for good reason, the Drakwald's spider breeding pits have been busy and are proud to present an Arachnarock and Da Deff Creepas. Leonidas decided to crash the party as well.

First up, Da Deff Creepers. Led by Snagla Grobspit, these are the most elite Spider Riders out there. Snagla being a master ambusher himself, he has led this spindly sqwad to many successes around Karak Eight Peaks when Skarsnik called his very own Waaagh. Now back home in the Drakwald, they continue to serve the Spider Kult.
Da Deff Creepas!

Next up, the greatest offering to the Spider God that the Forest Goblins of the Drakwald could create, the Arachnarock. This monstrosity is the entire reason I started this project and I'm super happy with how it came out, but it might be a while before I attempt my second and third due to the sheer amount of effort it required.

"The Arachnarok is a nigh-unstoppable predator bigger than an Empire townhouse. In the depths of the forest where the light of the sun never penetrates, the gargantuan eight-legged monstrosity stalks and entraps whole Beastmen herds as well as larger prey such as Giants or Cygors. After incapacitating larger creatures with flesh-dissolving venom, an Arachnarok Spider will drink up the liquefied innards of its paralysed, but still living quarry."

The Creature in its entirety.

Size comparison of the Arachnarock to the Spider Riders

Last but not least is Leonidas. Not exactly staying on theme but this was a project I planned to do last year as a tribute to the 2,500th anniversary of the Battle of Thermopylae and our visit to Greece the year before. This was my first time trying to put my all into a single model and i'm incredibly proud of the result. Soon his cohort of spartans will join him(though they are sporting a more tradtitional garb rather than the 300ish style seen here.)

All up should be somewhat in the ballpark of 187 points
10x Spider Riders = 100 points
Leonidas = 5 points
Arachnarock Howdah: 6 x 5 = 30 points
Arachnarock = 45 points(will need verification, though the model is quite literally over twice the size of a 28mm Panzer)
Webbed up Goblin on the Base = 5 points
Large Web Spinning Spider on the Howdah = 2 points

29 Skullz in total for this entry.

Happy Painting All!

From HerrRobert (Robert H): Skeletons Skewer Earth Elementals in the Golum's Haunt (55 points)

Pomponia Valeria Exuperantia sighed again; sighs were becoming her most frequent expression as her reduced company shepherded Brother Lazarus and Siszter Hazel into a clearing in the Chambers of Challenge. Tall, snow-covered pine trees rose from what she had thought was a cavern, or some kind of chamber with cobbles and pavers to floor it.

A loud crash rose ahead; shards of rock and earth bounced off the trees, walls and through various skellies. A giant earth elemental burst through the chamber's floor and emerged from a pile of rubble as if solid rock had not been there before.

The company responded with well-oiled precision, reanimation magics of a necromancer long gone giving magical sinew to bone picked clean by misadventure in the Frozen City. Archer skellies fanned to the flank, plucking arrows from quivers and drawing longbows to pulls far greater than mortal muscle permitted. Khopesh and dagger whirling, Kreirdgeinek Tundreirtmum, once a barbarian come to Felsted for adventure and profitable rage, surged forward to render earth, fossil and rock asunder once again.

For my next entry, I present more undead adventurers for Pomponia's company, and an earth elemental summoned by the dastardly yet sartorially eloquent mind flayer, Bathalian D'Kuhl. As it says on the tin for the Golum's Haunt:

“..IT WALKS…!!”  Paint something re-animated, stitched-together, bolted-together, re-created from steel, clay, earth, etc.

Well, skeletons are by definition reanimated by magic, and this earth elemental is certainly assembled from earth, clay and even a skeleton.

First up is the earth elemental. It's a Reaper Bones product, available here. Mine wasn't the white plastic, but the grey. It's a lot less fiddly, detail is clearer, though ti does have problems with rubber-like mold lines.

I put it on my usual Renedra paver base, and built up the rubble with railroad ballast and river rock shards from Michaels. I think it worked rather effectively to create rubble. Painting was relatively easy, with German Camouflage Black Brown, Charred Brown, Heavy Siena and Flat Earth from Vallejo, washed with the extremely useful Army Builder Strong tone. The skeleton on his shoulder was picked out in Army Builder Skeleton Bone.

Inspired by some of Sidney's work in "A Demonstration of Armes" in Laarden, I decided to go a bit bolder on the cobbles and pavers. I've always liked the look of green slate, and so I tried it here. It was really simple, just Dark Angels Green contrast paint from Games Workshop on top of the now usual Charcoal Gray and Hippo Gray from Delta Ceramcoat. It all got a black wash to fill it out. It's not perfect, but getting there.

The skellies are all kitbashed. I started with bodies from Games Workshop, the same box of five I used for other members of Pomponia's company. Instead of the spear and shield that came in the box, I picked up some later Tomb King archer bits off Ebay. That gave me four archers. The barbarian skelly I took two khopeshes from the bits, one of which had the blade snapped halfway. That became a dagger.

I'm rather pleased with the conversions. Painting was very simple. I primed them with Army Painter's Skeleton Bone. The bows and armbands are a dull red triad of Vallejo Burnt Cadmium Red, Craftsmart Burgundy, and Delta Ceramcoat Barn Red. All the leather is Vallejo Red Leather with Army Painter Strong Tone to wash. Finally, I used Games Workshop's Skeleton Bone contrast to ink the bones themselves. The photos give a yellow tinge to the GW contrasts, especially Skeleton Bone and Aggaros Dunes, but I like how they look in the flesh, so to speak.

The best part is the cobbles. Again inspired by Sidney, I decided to be a bit bolder. I picked out a few in Delta Ceramcoat Stonewedge Green and Barn Red, Apple Barrel Sky Blue, and GW Dark Angels Green Contrast. Then I washed it heavily with black to ink in the recesses, and blend it together. I really like it, and will use it both on further expansions of my Undead, but may even go back and update some of the earlier ones.

My favorite of the bunch has to be Kreirdgeinek Tundreirtmum. He's not technically a barbarian per the Frostgrave rules, since they use a single two-handed weapon; he'd more accurately be classed a tunnel fighter, since they do use two handed weapons, but he's reasonably put out with anger management issues and dispatching foes with quick brutality is probably workable. If pressed, bad pun there, he could be a "barbarian tunnel fighter" per the Forgotten Pacts supplement. It's the GW sculpt I used for the body, especially that very expressive skull.

So, points. One Squirrel point, for having 5 models. I'm also claiming eleven skull points, one for the skeleton on the earth elemental, five for the skellies faces, one for the skull on the quiver sling, and four more for the Janus skulls on Kreirdgeinek Tundreirtmum's khopesh and dagger.

Finally, five 28mm foot figures are 25 points, the earth elemental is easily 54mm high for 10 points there, plus twenty for the Golem's Haunt, for a total of 55 points. Not a points bomb by anybody's standards but mine as a ridiculously slow painter, but I hope to have a few more entries in before the lid closes Saturday morning.

From Jez Todd: Week 12 - Landsknechts - 15 points

 Hi All

Bit slow week as only 3 figures painted - still I suppose they are Landsknechts. Got sidetracked in touching up my Imperialist army - the lead is mainly old Hinchcliffe, painted ...ahem ...over 30 years ago! They needed a freshen up as they all looked a bit dated, not helped by the "old school" way I had based them up. As I play Impetus I wanted to use more of the diorama basing style I have with the more recent armies.

Anyway what better way to freshen up a unit than by adding an extra standard bearer. This is a  Hinchcliffe artillery figure, that has one of the brilliant Pete's flag standards. I switched and added him into the back base for a pike block.

The second figure is a Foundry shot - I needed him to make up the missing figure for another skirmish unit. Chose the classic yellow as really wanted to show that it was a Landsknecht unit.

Finally I had an Artisan halberdier that was kicking around. I added him to another couple of foot to make a foot command base - handy if I decide to put my General with a pike unit.

So just 15 points - will try to get another post in just to finish off the Challenge. Have a great final few days all.

Cheers Jez

From GeorgeS - Knights Solar - ( 30 Points)

I'm back again and here we have another Old Toy Soldier come to life!! ( yes,..again..haha)

This is a Kelloggs ( made by Crescent?) plastic Knight in 1:32 scale from the 60's. Arrived to me in a bad scratched and playworn condition, but fortunately , unpainted and complete. No missing or broken parts. The plastic surface was very damaged and it is still visible in it's face. I didn't want to correct something there as it would be a disaster.. So painted the face over the scratches..

Another beautiful little old guy for my collection! Hope you enjoy  :)

Running against the clock now, to paint a female figure for Lady Sarah since I have no creative idea for the next room... See you soon again...(hope so!)

'Till next time

Keep Up the Brushes!!

From JonathanO: Assyrian chariot - Oubliette (55 points)

How about some 40 year old miniatures for the Oubliette location?

The 25mm 2 horse ancient Assyrian chariot and supporting infantry are from Lamming miniatures.  I originally bought 3 of these chariots, but they never got painted.  A few years ago I acquired another 5, so I still have a lot to paint.  I had a few extra infantry figures so I included an archer and a spearman to the base to support the chariot.  The base is 120mm x 80mm.

As well as the rest of the chariots, I really need to get some of the cavalry painted.

Points:  For 2 horses, 2 crew plus the chariot, I think 25 points.  Add 10 points for the two infantry,  plus the location bonus of 20 = 55 points.

With 4 location challenges completed on level 2, I can move quickly down to level 3.

From George S - Tomb - ( 20+? points)

Been very busy this last month and I had no time for blogging...Plenty time of painting though...

Last week now and I'm running against the clock. Have some of the last rooms ready and three challenges left to be painted... I thing I will catch up.....

So, a small vignette here for the "Tomb" chamber. A small and forgotten, WW2, US Soldier burial ground. Scratch built in 1:32 scale. Some accessories of a "dead" plastic Airfix soldier used.

So 20 points for me and  (?) for the small terrain item .It has 9 cm diameter, if that helps.

Be soon back with another chamber...

'till then..

Keep Up The Brushes!!

From ScottM: Altar of the Snowlord - Samurai (105 pts)

Our brave adventurer finally reaches the last room of the Chambers of Challenges: the Altar of the Snowlord. Our hero steps into the room and looks over his shoulder and yes, his help has arrived. Into the room stream a contingent of samurai and their ashigaru retainers.

These figures are all 28mm metal. The samurai base and teppo base are all from Kingsford Miniatures. The command base is from Steel Fist Miniatures. I've based these figures up for Impetus. First up is the samurai base.

Next up is the base of Teppo.

And finally is the command base. This figure is Ishida Mitsunari, the loser of the Battle of Skegihara (with his head still attached).

So that should be:
15 - 28mm foot figures = 75 points
1 - 28mm cavalry figure = 10 points
Total = 85 + 20 (Chamber bonus) = 105 points
