From ArthurS: Mushrooms in Averland! (40 points?)

 Hello everyone,

I am sorry my posts have been a bit delayed lately, due to school and other hobbies. But luckily I finally had some time to do some painting.

I started painting my Averland warband for Mordheim and I painted these cute little mushrooms.

For my warband I chose black and teal. I know these colours don’t really fit Averland but I just thought they were a nice colour combination.

The figures are all plastic North Star Frostgrave knights miniatures and a converted Blood Bowl Halfling which I liked a lot. One of the reasons I like this warband for Mordheim is that you can add Halflings.

The mushrooms are 5 small ones and 1 big one with a frog on it. I thought it would be a nice idea to give the mushrooms a hardcoat (gloss varnish) on top to make it look a bit more magical.

Counting points is a bit tricky, because while the Frog magician and the Mordheim warband are all 28mm figures (6x 5 = 30 points) the little mushrooms are far smaller. I measured them and they are about 15mm so I reckon 2 points each? (5 x2 = 10) Together that makes 40 points to get me off the 5 points I have now. Curt persuaded me before the Challenge to set my target at 300 points instead of my own estimate of 100 and I do doubt that I am ever going to reach that 300, the 100 would be possible I guess.

Great to see what you’ve been working on! I do like your teal and black colour scheme .. who cares if not exactly approval, you like the colours and that’s the best thing 😊

The magical mushrooms are aces, and I bet they will be well used as tabletop decor or objective markers.

Don’t worry too much about a 300point goal, Curt also talked me into that goal and I now know that there’s no way I’ll be meeting it … so you and I will be very happy with achieving what we can!

From ArthurS: New Year new techniques (5 points)

Hello Everyone,

This year's challenge I wanted to start of with painting this Titan Forge model I acquired at the Crisis in Antwerp. 

I intend to use it for dnd as a foe for my players. I intentionally painted him verry dark to show he is a bad guy and I made the base a sandstone-like colour so it contrasts with the mini itself.

 
Speaking of contrast this is the first time I ever used contrast paint wich I used for the green. For the armour I dry brushed the grey basecoat with silver and then a nuln oil wash on top. Using a basecoat in an other colour then white or black and then using it as a layer is also something I have not done before.  

This 28mm figure is good for 5 points and makes sure I am not thrown out of the Challenge by the Snowlord. 

At this moment I have several projects on the go and am not sure what my next entry is. Untill next time, Arthur.

From ArthurS: The Final Post (5 points)

 Hello Everyone,

While I really like painting, there's loads of other things I also like and therefore when I reach my points target I am usually content to leave it at that. But this year I managed to find a figure I really liked a lot. This is a Turtle Spellcaster that I intend to use for DnD. His name is Serus Fernblood. 

The producer of this lovely miniature is Goose Miniatures, I bought him as my first online purchase with my own pocketmoney, but didn't notice it is a company located in the lands of the Snowlord. Since delivery from the Frozen Chaos Wastes takes forever, he almost didn't arrive before the Challenge ended. Luckily he came in time and I have painted him up. 

As he is a single 28mm figure he adds another 5 points to the total in the list for me. We tried to get a Blogger account for me so I could reply to all your excellent posts, but I am apparantly too young. We will try again next year, even if we have to cheat a little.

Yes, the postal 'service' in the Lands of the Chaos Wastes can be a bit of a Challenge at the best of times (but we make up for it with excellent curling bonspiels and poutine... Sorry, that's the best I can come up with... *shrugs*).  Nonetheless, I'm delighted that Serus arrived in time for you to get him painted before the curtains closed on this year's event. He's a great mini! I especially like the flames in his hands and his glowing blue eyes. I hope he gives you good service in your upcoming D&D games!

From SanderS and ArthurS: Fantasy in the Library, Dungeons and Dragons! (50 and 35 points)

 Hoi,

You might have noticed Arthur and myself have been lacking in posts lately.  We were both down with a serious flu for a couple of weeks but are doing fine now. Since we are also having a holiday at the moment we partook in a little "Father and Son"project.  As Arthur is heavily involved in Dungeons and Dragons lately, we thought that would be a great subject for the Fantasy Department in the Library. Arthur has decided he will not be entering the Library this Challenge but agreed to tag along on my journey along its long and bookfilled corridors.

These figures have been in my collection for quite some time, I can't remember the producer but they are adult versions of the kids that accidentally enter the World of Dungeons and Dragons in the 80's cartoon. Said cartoon is my only real link with DnD apart from playing 2 games with Arthur, but he is now re-watching it and I decided to buy him a 3D printed set of the actually cartoon characters from Etsy.

And so we decided to paint up two versions of the fellowship, one of the young kids painted up by the Young One himself and one of the grown-up fellowship painted by the Old Fart himself.

Pointswise, Arthur has painted up 7 miniatures in 28mm so he should be getting 35 points added to his tally.

Now I have painted a miniature less, since Uni is depicted on the shoulder of Bobby in my grown-up version, but I do get the Library bonus of 20 points along with the 30 for 6 miniatures in 28mm.

From ArthurS: Servants of the Old Ones (20 points)

Hello Everybody,

For today's post I painted my Lizardman, I really like how they turned out. One of the things I really like about fantasy games, is that you can create a background for your miniatures. So here is the lore for my Lizardmen. All of my Lizardmen have spawned in Metot, a village somewhere in Lustria where a Dark Slann mage rules. He has made a deal with the Chaos Gods so they will give him more power. The Dark Slann banned a lot of people who might know something is wrong in his behaviour. Because if anyone would find out that he joined Chaos, they would depose him. For example: he orders one of his loyal guards to steal a cake from the bakery and he then blame someone who's smart enough to figure out that he was bad. Everyone that was banned gathered and moved on together. They found a Skink Priest: a hermit that moved out of the village because the Slann mage didn't want to do anything about the ‘Chaos problem’. One day the Priest received a vision from the Old Ones. They told him the Demon Be'Lakor struck down in Mordheim. So as a true warband of the Old Ones they went to Mordheim to save the world and if possible munch on my Dad's Dwarves.

One of the things I really like about Lizardmen are the details I changed on their shields, they originally had decaptitated heads which I removed and I put some other parts (from a drum) on them.

The  bases I tried to make them grassy/forest-like and I am really happy with the effect I got.

As for points these 4 figures in 29mm scale will be good for 20 points. Next post will be a surprise.

TeemuL: Dark Slann joining Chaos! I guess Jervis hasn't thought about that! Very nice backstory, Arthur. Red-Yellow-Blue tricolor is very effective colour scheme and you have used it well on these rebel Lizardmen. Your bases look like swampy rainforests (I never been to one, though) and I guess that was what you were after. Good job. Goed gedaan!

P.S. If you are after points, then Library Map might be useful for you?

From ArthurS: A fresh start (45 points)

Hello Everybody,

I wanted to finally finish my black orc team this year, so that I could start the new year fresh with other projects. After two years sitting on my paintingdesk I am glad the team is finally done.

My captain Glark has a mushroom on his base, that is actually a failed print from my father's 3D printer. 

The goblin with the moon on his back is officially part of the regular goblin team, not the Black Orc team but I traded the goblin that was originally part of the all-goblin team with Dad.

I recently got a box of AoS Lizardmen and I have had a Lizardman Blood Bowl team for some time. I would now like to paint them, so I made a test model for both my BB team and the Seraphon. Different and contrasting colours feel the most Lustria to me, so I gave the Saurus itself yellow with blue spikes and the armor red with green ornaments. At a later date I will use this scheme for my Lizardmen army as well, to be used to play Mordheim and Warhammer The Old World. 

Recently a friend of mine came to play DND and asked if I could paint this model for her, so I did that. I made the big sword green as if it is a magic sword. I wanted to try that technique for a long time because I have seen people do that on the power swords of the Space Marines. I think it's a Reaper figure.

For points I think that 9 miniatures in 28mm would get me 45 points to get me started this Challenge.

Currently I am working on my other lizardmen, both the team as well as the Saurus Warriors, so they will hopefully appear here soon. Goodbye for now!

TeemuL: These look great, the Orcs are especially very neat! You definitely have gotten new skills during the years. Your Saurus looks good, as you said, very Lustrian colours. All the best with the rest of the team and army. And the very nice magic sword wielder to make it nine models, a nice start for you and a nice start for Thor's days.
