From Jeff B: 陷阱与钟摆(The Pit and the Pendulum)Xian Jing yu Zhong Bai (40 Pts)

My take on the next chamber, "The Pit and the Pendulum" is a Chinese version  of the tale. My good friend Mad Guru from Maiwand Day blog fame asked his wife to translate for me. This is her translation, thank you Xinhua.

Poor Yu had been convicted of crimes against the govt, tortured, and forced to watch his comrades being beheaded prior to his own execution. His story is timeless.....

陷阱与钟摆(The Pit and the Pendulum) Xian Jing yu Zhong Bai

A WIP shot with reference in the background

The merciless execution (Woo Ching Choo Jue) vignette comes from the Wargames Foundry China Range. It is originally made for the Tai Ping Rebellion, however I think it can be used all the way through the Boxer Rebellion. I intend to use it for the Tai Ping Rebellion, Tonkin in the 1880's, and the Boxer Rebellion 1900. Pictured here is one of my motivational reference pieces.

The standard is an image I researched and captured from the net, copied, flipped, sized, printed, cut, and glued to a .032 Piano Wire rod from any craft or hobby store. The finial is a bead from Hobby Lobby where I purchased the piano wire.

The figures are based on washers to sit in their magnetized boxes. I used wood glue, ballast, sand, and old coffee grinds for the basing materials and painted with craft store paints. Burnt Umber, then Honeycomb, then highlighted with Bamboo.

                                            Here's some close ups.

(4) 25/28mm figures x 5 Pts each + 20 points for the chamber = 40 Pts + standard pts - ?

From DrQ: A Female Rogue to Sarah the Sorceress for Some Assistance (25 points)

Having previously jumped back up to the Larder in order to complete level one, I now require some sorcerous assistance in order to get to my next locale—the Oubliette.

This is Mika, another of the figures from the Arcadia Quest spin-off game Masmorra: Dungeons of Arcadia.

As a board game component the sculpt has a few problems if you look too closely—mold lines running through detail, awkward basing, etc. But it looks good from the tabletop.

Also as a board game component I painted it up as closely to the box art as possible. I don't want to confuse players in the game. I also have an aesthetic choice where I only use NMM on my chibi minis to help sell the cell animation look.

Point wise, there's 5 for the miniature and 20 for the assistance of Sarah. (There's another skull for my meager skull throne as well.)

From Dallas: Two Orks and an Orc in the Orc's Pit (35 points)

Next up in the Dungeon is the Orc's Pit... and whaddaya know, I've painted some Orcs to join the serried ranks in my figure cabinets.

First up are two of these great Ork Blood Axe Kommandos from GW. These two have been sitting primed for donkey's years, and it only took one evening to get them painted, go figure...

These models are Perry twins sculpts and aren't they superb? The Blood Axe tribe are quite militaristic and disciplined, and their uniforms and equipment reflect this. Quite a departure from the Kev Adams aesthetic but I really like them. I painted them in the same camo pants as the rest of my all-metal all-Citadel Red Star Krew. And aren't those Swiss Army knives great???

Here's the six Kommandos all together. A previous owner converted the Ork carrying the multi-melta!

And here are the two new Kommandos with their fantasy forebear - another Citadel Orc from the old Lord of the Rings range (no not that one, the one from the '80s).

I like these models as they have a real Mongol Horde kinda feel.

Coincidentally enough I had painted his tunic in the same field grey colour as the Kommandos' field jackets!

Another room down, and next up is the Shrine, for which I have a plan... but in order to keep things moving I might use a Sorceress teleport next...

Stay safe everyone!

DaveS : The Chamber of Darkness 40pts

Painting in greyscale is something that I have thought about a number of times, but have never actually tried before.  I've always considered painting it well to be beyond my abilities, and I've seriously considered just skipping this chamber.

Coinciding with the point where I needed to start painting my next chamber, I realised that I had a copy of A Very British Civil War, and that while idly looking through my FLGS's website, I saw that they had a pack of Warlord Games Partisans.  These figures in predominantly civilian dress would be perfect for a start for my forces for that.

For each of these models, I first found that colours that I wanted the items to be, desaturated them using the PC, and then tried to find a colour that was closest to it from the Vallejo paint range.   It's clear that the app that I used to find colour matches wasn't perfect, but it gave a reasonable way to represent the colours on the models.  So without further ado, here are the models.

Having painted the four models in this style, I'm not sure that I enjoyed it enough to do a whole platoon in this style.  But, for now, they will do, and I may expand on this in the future.

I'm calling this 4x28mm models for 20 points, plus another 20 for the chamber.  I'm also going to offer this set up as my Curtgeld, should anyone want them (I dunno if there are additional points for this or not)

from RayR - The Chamber of Challenge - The Aquifier - Well Well Well 30pts?

Its the Chamber of Challenge time once again....
and with this entry I've completed Level 1!!!!

The Aquifer: Anything with a nautical, or waterbound, theme.

Well I did originally paint up something different for this entry, but found this Well I picked up some time ago from I don't know whom???
So I moved the other thing I've painted onto a different Level and entered this one instead.

Well, It was a little boring on its own, so I thought I'd paint this little chap up to go with the well.

I think he's a Foundry figure, but I could be wrong?
He will go into the massive box of Donnybrook civilians.

As to the points...
5 points for the figure
I'd guess 5 for the well, if you class it as a 25mm figure???
and 20 for the bonus. Making a grand total of

30 points!
Well I never!

Happy Thursday

Greetings Challengeanista's and Happy Thursday.  Welcome to another action packed Thursday.  But this one, this one is, indeed, special.

Why?  First we have just concluded the first month of the challenge and you know what that means!  That's right, your dreams of mathamagical splendor will be answered as there will be another glorious statistical update.  Such exciting news is surely to cause some of you to get the "vapors" so I'll pause here until you get control of yourselves.

No, no take your time and compose yourselves.....  OK let's proceed.

But yet there's more - our "wise and benevolent*" Snow Lord has very graciously postponed the dreaded culling.  Sadly, as of this moment there are still 13 wayward souls who have yet to submit an entry.  Your date with the hangman has been postponed for a few days - there still is hope to avoid the oblivion that results from being culled.  It is a most terrible fate but you all still have the chance to save yourselves.  Don't let me down.

Anyhow, I'll be be making periodic updates to the score summary, checking points math and deducting points for chuckle heads who forget to put their names on the posts.  Ah the simple joy of bureaucratic processes.

I'll also be working on a shiny and sexy new form of stats update.  Oh yeah baby, this is gonna be a day to remember......

The Chamber of Darkness

Along with the Egyptian Pulp figures, some random pulpy/jungle type scenery has followed.  Most of it is a variety of tans, but this fertility goddess from Reaper’s Bones line yelled to be painted in a gray stone. Please forgive the random non-gray offerings in the stone bowls and vessels, the rest is my attempt to blend from black to a lightened ash gray.

I’m not sure how this would be scored, as it’s 60-70mm tall, but the painting was less varied than usual 28mm, so it’s up to the admin to determine, I suppose.

See you all soon!

First Post! Jumping in on the Challenge

It’s been a busy month, and figuring out how to post has eluded me a bit.  I have, been painting, however, and will start my first post with a couple figures to kickstart myself into the Chambers of Challenge!  My painting doesn’t hold a candle to most of the material on this blog, but I’m working on layering, especially on the skin.

These are both from Old Glory in the US, from their pulp Egyptian and mummy pack. I hope the young lady will hurl me forward into ‘The Golem’s Haunt’ where the mummy will fulfill the re-animated requirement.

I believe these two total 10 points at five apiece, along with whatever the challenge bonuses are(slightly unsure, clarification would be outstanding).

More models shortly!

From Barks: Down, down, to the Orcs' Pit (220 points)

These goblins has been a real albatross around my neck- I primed these many Challenges ago, but it took the Pit to give me the impetus to get them done. These are goblins from GW's Hobbit range.

They're pretty straightforward to paint. The skin is the main feature: Fyreslayer Flesh Contrast, then drybrush Army Painter Elven Flesh and Corpse Pale. The boils get a thin wash of Vallejo Red Wash. The goblins are wonderfully grotesque, making a good low-tech mutant rabble.

Goblintown High Command

The Great Goblin doesn't have a lot of texture to his skin, unlike his wonderful minions. I had to build up the skin with milk-consistency strokes of the above colours in lines and dapples, with a stippling of pale brown as well. I painted the irises and pupils, to make up for not painting any of the eyes of the horde!

38x 28mm figures: 190 points
1x Great Goblin: 10 points
1x Orc's Pit: 20 points

GW Side Challenge: 200 points
Skull-o-meter™: 1
