From MartinN: Hairy arsed Barbarians (70 pts.)

For my penultimate post for this year I've got a bunch of hairy arsed Barbarians for you to enjoy. The figures are a mix of Victrix and Footsore Miniatures and were a lot of fun to paint. They're based on my usual 10x5 cm bases for use with Midgard Heroic Battles by James Morris. As I couldn't be arsed to hand paint all the different shield patterns I decided to use LBM (nowadays available through Victrix) decals instead. Backdrop is by Handiwork Games as ever

Points wise we have 14 miniatures for a total of 70 points

Lovely looking barbarians Nick, although I’m a tad disappointed that they are fully clothed given the title of your post.  I envy painters who can achieve those rugby shirt stripes on tunics.  Your transfers work well, and mark these guys as veterans of Roman units.  Love the basing and backdrop.

From JP: Germanic foot heroes and leaders (35 points)

These are the last of my Germanics, barring something I can use as a camp for To The Strongest. Part of me is glad they are done and another part misses painting nice Foundry Germans!

What a great finish to this army JP! They look suitably menacing and like they mean buiseness, great painting. I can't wait to see the Marians to oppose them.

From JP : Last Cimbrian German Units (I hope) (130 points)

These are the last of my Foundry Cimbrian Germans, excepting leaders and heroes (for To The Strongest). It has taken me a while and I wanted to put them in together instead of a boring trickle...

The cavalry unit is one of three I plan to field and is a mix of  noble horse with their mixed foot contingent, which helped Germanic cavalry have some 'punch'.

As you can tell from the number of pics, I'm rather fond of how these turned out!

And now the foot unit:

So:

 Cavalry    6 x 28mm     =  60

Foot         14 x 28mm    =  70

                                         130 points

Don't say I didn't warn you folks! I am hell bent determined to chew through these, though I still want to do some other periods! Pinning the shields remains a annoying process.

Another warband of angry Teutonic Terrors. These are dedicated to a very dear friend of 50 years whose paintbrush is currently convalescing! Get well soon!!

I hope my opponent doesn't see this angle too often!

Now now JP, nothing to yawn at in your post mate, these are still brilliant to goggle at!  Most of us Challengers are hobby-butterflies and flutter from the one project to the other, mostly always before finishing what we started. You are one of those rare stalwarts that soldiers on (see what I did there?) and tries to finish his projects and I think we all admire that quality a lot! And it also really helps that you have painted these Germans up in the same consistently great level of painting as the rest of your work. So keep it up and let us see you finish this project!

I am plowing through my lovely Foundry figures, it is not a chore but a labour of love. Now I need an opportunity this year to field them as opponents are sparse - so many periods, scales and interests abound now days that I literally miss the days of WRG rules dominating all gaming periods!

From JP - Early Germanic Foot (30 Points)

Well, I think this Analog will see me reach the end of my Cimbrian adventures, where the Germans are concerned. If you've seen my work the past two years, you know I have an obsession with fighting the Cimbrian Wars. My 28mm collection is made up for Victrix and Foundry figures. Earlier this year, I picked up a sizable order of Foundry's Copplestone Early Germans as I love his sculpting style. My Victrix are great, but metal is still my favourite medium.

WARNING: not everyone is clothed in this mob...

Without further ado, here are six Cimbrian skirmishers, mainly Suebi, looking for their first trophies, though one seems to have gotten a bit ahead of the rest (trophy wise). 

That's  6 x 28mm = 30 points

More to come... lots more... not to mention the Marians...

Lovely work on these early Germans, JP. Like you, I really enjoy the sculpts from Copplestone. Such nice, clean lines, with just enough detail - easy to paint. Your basework and sabots look excellent as well, another unit for the barbarian horde! I look forward to more hairy Germans and the promised Marians.

From JP: Early Germans - big on Wrath and Violence! Abetted by stout lady hobbits... (100 points)

My Foundry Early Germans continue to fill my thoughts and my painting table and brought out an intensive effort this week. I suspect that by the end of the exercise I will have way more figs than I can use or need...  These are more of the character figures supplemented by war hounds to keep them company. It includes a foray into striped trousers, which I rarely try, but I had better get used to as Gauls will be the next project...

As I am running out of time , I dug into my trunk of unpainted figures and came up with this adventuring party of female hobbits, who should be enough to frighten off any troll... sadly, I can no longer recall the manufacturer. The firm started off in Germany and moved to Montreal. I bought a lovely 100 Years War Hobbit army from them and these were extra figures. They will get me into Violence and Wrath for my Teutonic Thunderers.

So, my tally is :

    6 x Germanic Warriors 25mm        30 points

    4 x War Dogs 25 mm                      10 points    (I have counted each as half a fig)

    4 Adventuring hobbit ladies           20 points

    Violence                                          20 points

    Wrath                                              20 points

    Total:                                             100 points

Another great entry, JP! I absolutely love your meticulous painting and your choice of colours. The Germans are great, the striped trousers are very nicely done indeed and the complete base looks interesting and varied. A great addition to your army. The hobbits are little gems too, they sure are fantastic little models and another fabulous paint job. 100 points it is, then!

From JP: Continuing the Early German Horde (110 Points)

 I have had the bug to build Early Germans and Marian Romans for a few years now. Various rule sets beckon (Infamy, Infamy and To The Strongest in particular - a long ways from WRG 2 that I cut my teeth on...). I painted some in last year's contest and again, things slowed, as ever.

Re-visiting my Early Germans, I realised that although I really like the Victrix figures, I miss the Foundry Copplestone Early Germans for their character, carving style and weight. When I was on the Isle of Wight earlier this year I ordered a batch of them from Wargames Foundry and I am trying to paint both brands of figs in parallel.  As I age, I keep going back to older style figures, memories or just becoming an old fart?

As I have a number of units without standards, picking up the Foundry standard bearers pack was logical, and lo and behold, there is a lovely figure appropriate for Dante's Lust in a pagan woody priapic way... 

So, I am offering up 18 figures (well, one is a touch more gruesome) as follows:

17 x Early Germans and a totem    :         85 points

1    x Marian Officer                      :            5 points

1 x Dante Lust                                :         20 points

Total                                                :       110 points

I thought of holding the totem back for Violence,  but hey, it's a ways off!

Some very fine hairy Germans, JP! Yes, Foundry figures remain at the top of their class, don't they? I like how the skin came out,  the rather muted colour palette you used on those that wear clothes, and the effect on the hair. 

I would almost be tempted to say you drive a hard bargain for the Lust bonus, but actually I think the standard is rather suitable. So 110 points added to your tally!
