Skull Duel XV, Canto VI. The results

The saga so far:

I. The passing of the poet

II. The death mask

III. The tussles over Dante's remains

IV. The rediscovery of the lost bones (and WW2 shenanigans)

V. The 1921 anthropology study

In the mid-2000s, a team of Bologna anthropologists scanned Professor Frassetto's 1921 replica of Dante's skull, and made a digital model.

Digitisation

Frassetto's reconstruction of Dante's face from his skull was hindered by the lack of a jaw. The new team reconstructed a digital jaw-of-best-fit. They then used the emerging technology of 3D printing to produce a skull (for the aficionados: FDM, ABS, 0.254mm layers, ~53h print time).

3D printed Dante's skull

Forensic anthropology physical techniques were used to reconstruct a face; the most scientific reproduction of Dante Alighieri.

Skull Duel Results

There was a flurry of skully activity and jostling in the rankings; all hail the new Skull Champion! The prize, as handed down in the ancient traditions, is the previous year's winner's skull.

Skull of the Week

In a competitive field, TomL's skull has an amazing amount of character.

TomL

Skullz down for the Skull Duel (with an optional Analogue Painting Challenge attached). It's been great fun as always, and I've really enjoyed being your guide on the 700 year saga of Dante's skull.

Arrivederci,

Unofficial Side Duels Results, pending Audits

Here's the standing as of March 23rd, for the non-Skull related duels.  I would ask all Duellists to check their scores and make sure that everything is recorded correctly.  The end date of the challenge is done and dusted but I will give the Duellists until March 26th to get their forms submitted.  Again some Duellists may be Sandbagging...

First up an updated pie chart of activity.

SD1 (Moose and ) Squirrel Duel

GeoffT held the lead all challenge, despite an early run by Curt and a late charge by Martijn.  All Hail Squirrel-Whisperer Geoff.

SD2 30K Heresies

Congrats to Greg, who outscored all other challengers combined.  In these crazy and chaotic times it is comforting to know that the right lunatic won tis challenge.

SD3 Skulls

Scoring is pure head count (pun intended). This one will be adjudicated by Barks.

I will leave skull tallies to our resident Post-Mortem Phrenologist.

SD4 Mech Madness

This duel tightened up but Sander prevailed.  Congrats to the MechMaster.

SD5 WW2 Duel

Well this one escalated quickly!  There were 978 points recorded between March 4-20th!  DaveD leads the way following a late war punch through the Ardennes. Funny, I thought the project was one he did a lot of this work earlier in the challenge (dare I raise the S word here?).  Hard on his heels was DavidB who mobilized his motorpool.

This one needs auditing and confirmation was everyone involved.  I am sure that MattW has a lot more than 30 W2 points.

SD6 Napoleonics

After three months there are seemingly two points separating Lee and Ray. However, I refuse to call a winner on this one.  Ray did not fill in a Duels form after March 5th and had several Napoleonic posts after that date.  The Sandbagging king has until Wednesday to claim those points or suffer defeat.

There was little doubt about this one from day 1.  Kerry was a clear winner.

SD8 Retreat from Moscow

See my comments on the Napoleonic Duel above.  I suspect both Lee and Ray of Sandbagging, as neither's total matches their Napoleonics scores.

Well done to all of the duellists.

From PeteB - I did it!

First of all I would like to thank Curt, Lady Sarah and the minions for organising this challence and all the good work they did for us. I also would like to thank the fellow challengers for all the nice comments and support I got. It was an honour to make part of this, and this for the first time! Can I sign in now for the next one? 😉

I did it! I never thought I could manage to reach my goal of 300 points but even when I do not count the points for the circles of the Divine Comedy I have a nice total of 305 points. So this means I painted some figures. A lot more as usual. Well here are the pictures with the whole lot.

The whole bunch!

And here the stars of the show from this challenge for me!

A starting figure to clean
the painting desk!

Hagen Wild West Townsman.

Good old Airfix Medieval figures!

Lust by Valdemar!

Stronghold Terrain's Richard!

Music and dance by Dulcop French Infantry!

Very mad villagers by Weston Toy Company!

Some Crisis figures, Tijl Uylenspiegel and friends.

Crescent Sherrif of Nothingham.

My favorite 3D printed Plague Doctor!

Dulcop Robin Hood figure.

Waterloo1815 Roger's Rangers.

Jecsan Spanish Knights.

And a 3D printed Calamity Jane closed the door!

If I counted them good I have painted 41 figures (12 x 20 mm; 6 x 28 mm; 23 x 54 mm). For me that is a whole lot in 3 months. In a normal year I paint about 100 figures. So this is a very good result!

Thank you all for watching!
