Welcome to the Painting Challenge. Here you will find the fabulous, fevered work of miniature painters from around the world. While participants come from every ethnicity, gender, age and nationality, they have three things in common: they love miniatures, they enjoy a supportive community, and they want to set themselves against the Challenge. This site features the current year's event along with the archives of past Painting Challenges. Enjoy your visit and remember to come back soon.

From AdamC - Dark Age Bowmen (20 Points)
I found a bag of Griping Beast archers a couple of weeks ago at the Hobby Bunker after gaming with John. They were on sale so I figured I would grab them and round out my forces for Dux Britanniarum.
The red brown cloak is the "leader of this merry band" of raiders.
Several of the men have swords which they don't need in Dux since they flee if contacted
I tried to paint the fletching but I don't think it came out. in the photo.
I don't know if leather shields are correct the Dark ages but they seemed to fit the size and shape of these shields.
That should be 20 points for four 28mm figures I have more of these so you may see some more.
From Curt:
Nice looking figures Adam (though the photos are a bit dark). I really like the autumnal theme with the fallen leaves, great touch there. Well done!

I will try to get some brighter shot s.
ReplyDeleteYou could print out a background that is pale in colour. A neutral grey would be perfect with this palette.
DeleteThat might be just what is needed.
DeleteVery nice Adam and like Curt, I think those leaves work perfectly with the tones you used for these guys.
ReplyDeleteThanks I got the leaves form the company "Secret Weapon" and they really do work nicely. I am starting to run short need to get some more.
DeleteYaaay! Dark Ages. Nice work. cheers
ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteGreat work, love the leaves on the base, that's a great touch.
ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteThese are real nice, always good to have more bow troops.

Yes being able to reach out and touch some one is always helpful :)
DeleteNo reason not to cover shields in Leather in this period. It would be a lot more readily available than cloth would be! (Canvas is used by re-enactors for cost reasons mostly)Very nice to see more dark age figures.
ReplyDeleteYeah it seemed reasonable for a light buckler like shield such as these but I fear I am working more by guess and common sense than knowledge when it comes Dark Age gear.
DeleteAh, my second favourite period. Really like the bases you've created for these guys.
ReplyDeleteThank you.
DeleteNice archers Adam :)
ReplyDeleteThank you
DeleteVery good, they look the part of Dark Age ne'er do wells. Although lighting can be one aspect, a lighter background can make the camera compensate, causing the figures to go dark. I think the wood table is doing this in the shoot. Try to find the exposure value on your camera or adjust the white balance in post with an image editing software. I think even Picasa has some tools that would work.
ReplyDeleteThat may be the case Sean.
