I think this particular box, warbuggy, nobz bike, wartrak, and the classic RT-01 marines with a few blisters of metal marines were my first GW purchase. GW has come a long way since then and the line of Space Orks has expanded greatly.
I've only painted a few of my Orks in the mountain-of-neglect as I never felt the need to build the army fully and only fought skirmishes with a few squads. During the move from Northern Michigan, I discovered I have a lot of Orks. Unfortunately this won't be the paint bomb I wanted as the Evil Sunz, Death skullz, Gorkas, and Morkas had to be set aside as I have to go back to work in the morning. I paint infantry faster anyway! ;)
Holidays and sickness had me volun-told to report to work a few days more than I wanted which cut into brushtime.
These are all RT Era Orks even the Snake-bite Nob and Runt-herder were from the first "codex" called Waaarg Orks. So I guess we can say this was the first 40k army!
Just some white warpaint and mostly gray and brown gear. I used red for a spot color with a little bit of black and yellow to make the snake bite big mob look more horde like.
I actually like the variations in the sculpts as they reused the sculpts with subtle differences to increase variety. It definitely made me want to collect them all!
Unlike the other clans, Snake bites are traditional sorts and prefer to fight without vehicles. They also have lots of runt herders and breed the warboars, squigs, and squigoths.
I used GW and P3 paints with 3 to 6 layers. NMM on the gear and weapons just to highlight the gewdads sculpted onto the weapons. They are all a mixture of white and black primered minis which helped vary the tones.
Useful for 40k and fantasy. The snotlings are a good screen and ammo for the Shokk attack gun ( don't have one yet) the wee one with the red flag was used to designate the gun's target.
The newer Orks are bigger and packed with detail, but I think these have a certain charm beyond nostalgia. Since Orks are a myriad horde, I have no qualms mixing my 30+ years of hoarding to the horde! ;)
23 28mm and 23 15mm
The Waaarg grows!
Hopefully the vehicles will be completed before military drill next week, I just couldn't quite get them done so Jamie will have to clean up the diesel soot and tire tracks. ;)

Ah, its great to see all this Rogue Trader Ork goodness - it makes me very nostalgic for Vortex Grenades, Graviton Guns, and the insane (but fun!) Following Fire rules (sniff).
What a wonderful horde of Old Skool greenskins, Dave (with the original box in the background, no less)! Very clean brushwork and I really like the shading on their skin, weapons and leather gear. I also find it's great that you have some snotlings in there to serve as ablative armour and analogue range reference. :)
161 Points for you, Mr. B. Looking forward to seeing the upcoming vehicles! Waaagh!!
Nice Orky boyz David :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tamsin!
DeleteSome classic models here, well done Dave!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Greg!
DeleteThese have come out great and honestly I think are way better than the newer offerings, if not in terms of detail and variation than for the inherent humour of these sculpts.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I do appreciate the detail of the newer sculpts, but I sincerely miss the animosity tests, mad Boyz rules, painBoyz and brain surgery....possibly the only army that could defeat itself in turn 1 without your opponent having to do anything! ;)
DeleteLovely old orks, I remember buying this box in Nottingham when it came out mistakenly thinking it was a box of plastics! Still they're really characterful sculpts and really nicely painted.
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
Thanks! I thought they were plastic too when I bought them. It is nice to have them finally in their war colors!
DeleteI love these older sculpts, they have so much character compared to the newer ones, and your painting is spot on for these guys.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Byron! I'm rather ashamed it took me so long to paint them, but at least they are no longer "tin" boyz! ; )
DeleteThat is a real blast from the past, David - beautiful old skool colour scheme as well!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Evan! Just wait till the wheelz hit in the next one!
DeleteOh! Classical ork minis, excellent paint work
ReplyDeleteThank you! My nephew didn't believe me when I said they were 40k minis, at least I had the box to prove it! ; )
DeleteClassic! Love the padded armour.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Barks! The padded armor and weapons are just some of my favorite parts of these classic models!
DeleteThank you, Curt! It is nice to have these RT orks in proper orky war colors. I too miss those and the other fun weapons and rules from Rogue Trader. At least I still have those old rulebooks and these orks can fight in the classic rules and top off my forces for 8th edition too! ;)
ReplyDeleteThat green came out very nicely. Great looking unit.
ReplyDeleteThat's a rough looking crew! Nice work David.
