I used to be a big fan of Martin's series until he transitioned from a writer to essentially a celebrity grifter. I don't want to get into the long story of GRR Martin's inability to deliver the goods, but I'll provide a brief synopsis to explain my entry.
I, along with many other readers, waited for years after Martin's third book ('Storm of Swords') for him to complete the series. Updates on his progress turned into excuses, excuses to obfuscation, and obfuscation to, well, pure fiction, I guess.
To put this in perspective, his first book was published in 1996, with the following two being published over four years. Pretty good pace, right? But then it took him 11 years to write the next two books (really, it's 1 and a half books). It's now been another 10 years and his suckers for punishment fans are still waiting for the next book in the series. Yep, 25 years for 5 books. Martin says there will be at least two more to complete the series. Riiiight. Suuure there will. I hope his afterlife provides for a typewriter...
As a counterpoint, JRR Tolkien completed 'The Lord of the Rings' over a 13 year span (1937 to 1949) while also working full-time as a university lecturer (and throw in a world war). Proper work ethic there.
Anyway, as everyone knows, HBO bought the rights to Martin's work and just plowed along to complete the series. They ended up filling-in the yawning gaps (over 3 seasons) which Martin had yet to complete, knowing full well that they couldn't count on him to give them the goods. After this, he has the temerity to say that the series ending was not 'faithful' to his vision. Wow, and what vision would that be precisely?! Gee, let's see. Oh, a blank page! So you have no vision Mr. Martin - shocking. What an egotistical, tone-deaf git.
So every time I hear about GRR Martin's pathetic excuses for his delays in completing 'Game of Thrones' I just roll my eyes and wonder what new torture he's putting his fans through.
The irony was just too great, so this is why I've left the sheets of parchment on the table completely blank. It seems fitting.
...and these ones to still try out... |
I'm going to claim 15 for the gibbet, 10 for Maester Martin (the tw@t), the 20 point Chamber bonus and my 5th Squirrel Point. Phew!
Next up: 'The Golem's Haunt'
Thanks for dropping in!
- Curt
Great models as always, Curt.
ReplyDeleteI really like the Green Stuff World rollers, too. So much easier!
As for Martin - I've never managed to get into the first one. Found it far too dense for my little brain! I do like the irony of your blank pages, though.
Thanks Noel, yes, the products from Greenstuff World are pretty darn cool. I have a few other textures to try out - looking forward to it.
DeleteI feel for you. I was a huge fan of the Wheel of time books, which never did finish as he died... I strongly suspect the same will happen with GoT
ReplyDeleteExcellent work on the figures though!
At least Jordan had an excuse (being dead and all). Martin is simply lazy and can't meet a deadline to save his soul.
DeleteSpot on. I was lucky in the aspect of I began reading GOT shortly before his last book came out. Well done.
ReplyDeleteBruceR
Well, early or late, you're still going to be waiting for the last of them, if they ever arrive.
DeleteGreat take on the theme Curt.
ReplyDeleteThanks Pete!
DeleteWhat an awesome use of that figure Curt. I got into the series fairly late but I agree with your ire.
ReplyDeleteCheers Jeremy.
Deletegreat work, those rollers are fab, will have to get one. Why does torture bring out the best work in us. Luckily my psychology is of the cod variety
ReplyDeleteHaha! Thanks Martin.
DeleteGreat Work!
ReplyDeleteThank you Adam!
DeleteI got bored of the GoT books pretty quickly. He spent pages explaining what people were esting at every meal, but just flitted past other parts of the story it seemed. Not a fan.
ReplyDeleteAwesome minis, Curt, the blank pages are very fitting.
Exactly! The first three books were not bad for that but the last ones have essentially been a Michelin guide to Westeros.
DeleteOoo very nice Curt, Its a lot better than my similar entry for sure!
ReplyDeleteOh, I don't know. I quite liked your gibbet Ray. But thanks for the thumbs up.
DeleteGreat work Curt, and I can completely sympathize with your annoyance with him. I can understand a few years between books, maybe even 3 or 4 if they are huge. But when writing is your only job, there is no excuse for this. At this point I am with you, I doubt we will ever see the real ending of the story, as he will likely drop dead of old age before finishing it.
ReplyDeleteOn the plus side, your painting is stunning as usual and I love all the esoteric figure you pull out of your .... collection. :-)
Yup, in my mind 3 years is the outside for getting a book done. If we were talking a page a day that would be over a 1000. Authors say that what they do is a job. So GRRM should treat it as such and meet his deadlines like the rest of us slobs. This 'artiste' stuff makes my blood boil...
DeleteGreat fun entry! I totally agree, and its a lovely finish!
ReplyDeleteBest Iain
I thought you, of all people, would find this post funny.
DeleteGreat items and bases! Great work!
ReplyDeleteThanks George!
DeleteBeautiful post, and a beautiful read. This post contains for GoT content than the hack himself has churned out in years..great stuff.
ReplyDeleteThanks dude!
DeleteMy comment from yesterday failed. Lovely painting, and the blank pages are a wonderful snarky touch!
ReplyDeleteCheers Barks. I was just about to paint some script on them and then stopped myself, 'What the hell am I doing? This is GRRM we're depicting...' ;P
DeleteVery well done Mr Campbell! Especially the light rust on the gibbet and the moss on it's post do bring it to life. That said, a slight dusting with some pigment maybe could have made the cobble base just that little bit more exciting.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, having read your blurb I'm quite glad I never got into GoT. It'd drive me crazy...
You know, I was going to hit the cobblestones with some earthshade and forgot. Thanks for calling me out on it. :)
DeleteThat is a great entry, love the details on the desk, but the magic roller is the business 🙂
ReplyDeleteRegards KenR
Cheers Ken! I took inspiration from your tortured soccer fan entry. :)
DeleteOof, brutal
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely brilliant stuff!
