Duels, Side-Challenges and Grudge-Matches for Challenge XIII

'I propose airbrushes at dawn...'

The the issuing of paint duels, side challenges and grudge matches extends waaay back to the first Challenge and has become a time-honoured tradition ever since. The duels help motivate participants to keep their steam up and creates a fun atmosphere of smack talk and brush baiting.

For those who are new to the Challenge let me explain what this is all about: paint duels allow for small groups of participants to test one another against a variety of whacky criteria. Maybe it's to see who can paint the most WWII vehicles over the duration of the Challenge, or who can paint the most figures within a particular historical period/genre, other duels may be to see who can get to a specific points threshold first. Really, the sky's the limit - it's entirely up to your imagination.

Over the years the side duels have become more formalized, with many of these clashes of brush and paint have become a storied part of Challenge lore.

There's already been murmurings amongst a few participants about issuing duels, and to facilitate such, there is an area of the blog dedicated for it for tracking purposes. You can find the link to the Duels page on the top navigation bar.

The ever compliant and ebullient Mr. Millsy will be in charge of keeping track of the paint duels for this year. ALL updates on duels must be sent to him for tabulation and posting - he will be the official scorekeeper of duels and side-challenges. Ndodgy spreadsheets, heretical documents, or bogus scorecards will be recognized. So send him a note to get your duel registered and keep him appraised of any progress.

Millsy can be reached at:

challengesideduels@gmail.com

Again, when you finish an entry that's eligible for scoring in a duel please send Millsy a quick note, giving the name of the duel and the criteria you wish to log. He in turn will update the duel page. Simple!

I'm going to start the proceedings with a Turnip28 Challenge. Yes, I've caught the bug (or is that an invasive root vegetable?), and plan to do up a bunch of figures for the game this winter. So, who in the group thinks that they can best me in number of points painted for Turnip28? My Second is ready to accept any worthy challengers. :)

Okay! Let's have some fun with all this! I want to see gauntlets dropped, cards exchanged and blood, er, paint on the floor. This is going to be fun!

  1. The squirrels are calling me once more. Would anyone care to (or dare to) throw down with me?

The criteria for the duel last year was:

You need 25 points or more of models. Bonus points do not count.
Each point must be unique in terms of army, scale or period. Differently uniformed troops from the same army do not count.

    3. I will participate in this duel! As I have no ability to remain focused on any single topic I might as well embrace my madness and see how many different subjects I can paint in this challenge.

    4. I’m quite sure that I must have a pile of unpainted miniatures laying around somewhere… if only I could remember where. I’ll squirrel along! Now what was I going to do again?

    5. Please count me in for squirrels again - and just because I'm thick please clarify - am I correct in thinking that an artillery, cavalry and infantry entry for 1 period would be 3 squirrels?
in pointy stick eras would spearmen, bills and archers be classified differently? I know I got quite a bit wrong last year:-)

    6. @Valleyboy - If they are all for the same army, they only qualify for 1 squirrel.
A squirrel point is awarded for each unique army, period and/or scale. Different units for the same army don't get any extra points. The aim is to have as much variety and uniqueness as possible.
I believe that some other stipulations that came up in the pre-challenge discussion last year were:
Two armies wearing the same uniform don't get squirrel points. (E.g. WW2 British and WW2 Canadians).
Two armies wearing the same uniform in different colours don't get squirrel points. (E.g. The various colour schemes used for 40K Space Marines).
Some examples of where and how Squirrels are awarded.
A unit of 28mm Napoleonic French and a unit of 28mm Napoleonic British = 2 Squirrels.
A unit of 28mm Napoleonic French and a unit of 15mm Napoleonic French = 2 Squirrels.
      28mm Napoleonic French and a unit of 28mm WW2 French = 2 Squirrels.

I hope that helps a bit.

    7. Cheers Stuart that makes it more clear!

    8. Am down for the squirrels here .. the oddball paintworks is always a nice refresher between larger projects..

    9. I like to look out of the window and count squirrels, so I will join in again. I won’t win, mind but do hope to beat my 3 from last year.

    10. Hi please also include me in the Squirrels challenge

    11. As I'm planning a less focused approach to the Challenge, please sign me for the squirrell duel

    12. Hey, sounds brilliant. While I'd love to stay focused, as Harry Callahan said 'A man's gotta know his limitations.' Count me in 😁

  2. Since sanity is (IMHO) overrated, I'll also issue a Skulls challenge. Who can paint the most miniature skulls over the course of the AHPC XIII?

    1. You have my skull! Skully McSkullface, the amazing counting servoskull, will tally up all the skullz.

    2. I will try the skulls duel again...or is it skullz!?

    3. As per tradition, my skull will be available as a chalice to the winner. Frankly, I have very little use for it these days...

    4. I'll paint some skulls in this Challenge

    5. I'll be adding more than a few skulls, sign me up!

    2. That Turnip stuff does look like fun. I'm not sure how many minis I'll be able to contribute, but I'll join in the mayhem!

    3. I too shall partake upon this root infested madness, and delight in seeing others similarly succumb to the allure of the tuber :-)

I also plan to attempt some T28 themed terrain pieces...

    4. Oh god.....Ok, put me down for this turnip nonsense.

  4. Since I try to learn a new painting trick/tool each challenge; I have dusted off my venerable paasche airbrush and excavated my airbrush box from the bowels of the mountain of neglect. To encourage use of the airbrush I submit a challenge of using an airbrush on as many entries as possible.
The criteria for an acceptable admission will be using the airbrush for more than priming and zenthial highlights. The airbrush will also have to be the tool for applying at least three further colors on the miniature/ tank/monster/ terrain.
Other side duels and bonus themes may also double tap into this duel. The point is to use the airbrush as much as possible. I am open to further criteria/restrictions of anyone who dares to pick up the gauntlet. ;)

    2. Up for the airbrush challenge!

    3. Any more criteria? I'm a n00b with airbrush on 3d surfaces. Shall we call the duel the pssft duel( might attract cats if said 3 times quickly). Calling the this the airbrush duel seems a little " paasche" . ;)

    4. Am also down for this. Have brought out my airbrush for the first time in a while now and having fun with it again. Plus got some cursed city models to paint, and the style heavily relies on the airbrush there so. Let's see!

    5. Count me in for the airbrush challenge, got a load of ww2 armour to decimate.

  5. I am going to throw down the gauntlet with a Challenge aimed at two individuals in particular, but others are more than welcome. Iain, Curt and I have all mused about doing Late Roman/Sub Roman Britain (aka Arthurian) stuff so let's get on with it in a Carausius Emperor of Britain Duel. (Historical reference https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carausius. but he's also a character in the Rosemary Sutcliffe novel The Silver Branch). We can work on anything figures that fit 3-5th Century Great Britain - Picts, Scots-Irish, Romans, Sub-Roman Britains, Early Welsh, Saxons and Franks.

    1. I hope to manage a few figures in this theme, but nothing substantial. Peter and Iain will take glee in trouncing me in the lists.

    2. We could go with a Vox Populi option with a vote rather than a Strength of My Legions pure points total.

    3. So many challenges with projects that I have kicking about. Got some Romans and Dacians kicking about that need a lick of paint.

    1. I oddly enough have a few tanks lying around needing some paint and quite a few zombie survivors and military troops somewhere in my mountain of neglect...I am close to finding them anyway! I will accept the cold war/modern challenge!

    2. Sounds like a great one for me to pitch in on -- although hard to rack up the points with 10mm

    3. Aah yes .. I might be in on that one

  8. A healthy level of interest already it seems!

In relation to Curt's note... No dodgy spreadsheets, heretical documents, or bogus scorecards APART FROM MINE will be recognized. Mwahahahaha!

  9. What about a "My codpiece is bigger than yours" challenge - a few of us might be painting units for Italian wars so it might be fun to have a running total or something of that ilk ( though I intend to diversify given my short attention span)

    1. I believe KenR is thinking of some Italian Wars and I think I might have a couple things on the burner. Could we expand it to the Renaissance period so I could fit in Siege of Malta?

    3. As I have figures neither assembled let alone primed for this period, I will of course happily take part!
