From BruceR Chamber of Challenges The Orcs Pit (25 pts)

The Orcs Pit challenge had me thinking ahead and to some very old "lead" orcs I had somewhere from the 80's.  Well life got busy and I saw this GW plastic Savage Orc NIB on the shelf and thought there is my mission.  It's been 7-8 years since a greenskin has come under the brush.  I've dabbled in miniatures since the 70's and came into contact with Warhammer (thanks to tanker Charlie Clay) at Fort Carson in 1989.  Back in the dakotas in the 2000s the local crew began to travel first to Winnipeg and than to Minneapolis for Warhammer tournaments.  Armies were painted and slaughtered along the way.  Wood Elves, Empire, Orcs and Goblins. We have moved back to historical and the fantasy armies sit in boxes.

This little beast was on the shelf and appears to be from GW's plastic heroes, maybe just before the old world exploded.

I spent a couple of nights this week and cranked him out.  Photographed him this morning.

Well, we have official entered the deep freeze here in N Dakota.  -15  and looks to be around for at least a week.  So sitting in the hobby cave (with the furnace roaring) feeling nostalgic.  So opened the boxes and broke out the Orcs.

So here is a stroll down memory lane.  Hope I don't offend anybody for posting past paint in sharing.

From DaveD - Sudan , Beja Warbands - 280 points

I have another bit of Sudan collection work completed. This sees the last bits from the 20 boxes of Perry Mahdists now being completed. Yes all that cutting stuff from the sprues is a period best forgotten . It takes me up to 1250 foot figures for the mahdists.

These are based on large bases from Simon Miller of Big Red Bat fame. Each large base has 14 figures on and represents in game terms a single large Warband for black powder , or 300 figures for Sands of Sudan

I am down to the last dregs of the lead mountain now - so I reckon that’s it for this years challenge Sudan entries .

56 28mm foot = 280 points .. mini point bombs , and get me near half way to target .

From ReillyOG: The Aquifer and Curtgeld - Swamp Trolls and Khazrak One-Eye!(93 points)

Here lies the end of my painting dryspell. After dredging through a solid 70 goblins(of 200) I quickly burnt myself and only just managed to break it with some fun stuff.

First, I've finally decided to enter the Snow Lord's Dungeon through the Aquifer, and who better to help me in than this merry band of River/Marsh Trolls! A unit of 6, this unit is made up of trolls who have made a habit of camouflaging themselves with all sorts of vegetation in the deep of the river waiting for passers by to provide a lovely lunchtime snack. These were a tonne of fun to do, especially returning to joyous muscle blending after the sea of boring hoods and cloaks that are night goblins. This was also the first time experimenting with some water basing, and while I'm pretty happy with how they turned out, im not keen to figure out water features that are a little more extreme than the humble puddle.

Had to get a close up of my favourite of the bunch.  Once upon a time this Gurrogg here was sent to raid the holiday home of a Empire noble, he came across the exotic Koi pond in the yard. After eating most of the fish (cause what else is there to do with a fish), he noticed that the fish here were a lot shinier and prettier than the boring brown fish in the rivers of the Drakwald. So, from that day forth, Gurrogg has carried around the fish as both a trophy and a friend. He's even named the fish "Gwub". Some of the goblins swear that there is something else in the river chasing this prized fish but the troll barely seems to care(or notice).

Enough with that nonsense, on to the star of the show and my entry for the Curtgeld, Khazrak One-Eye! This feller here is one of the most famous beastlords to grace the Empire with his unholiness due to the fact that Khazrak possesses a ruthless cunning far above his more bestial kin. Kharak and his relentless herds spare no one and have consistently been a major pain in the backside for the populous of Middenland. (Only now do I realise I'm a tad late with the Curtgeld entry, apologies)

He possesses the Scourge whip which is described as: "Scourge is a lethal whip, wrapped in the bitter curses of many generations of Bray-shamans. Its cruel barbs can tear out great chunks of flesh, causing the victim tremendous agony." In order to reflect how cruel he can be, this model totes a hefty 9 skullz all on its own.

All up, points total should be 105 93 points:
River Trolls: 6x10 8 points
Aquifer: 20 points
Khazrak One-Eye: 5 points(and 9 skullz)
Kurtgeld: 20 points

Happy painting all!

AdamC: Guardroom gunboats (30 Points)

Gunboats they aren't as sexy or powerful deap sea warships but they are well suited to defending harbors and coasts.  They are particularly good as customs ships facing off with lightly armed and lightly built smugglers. If you have enough of them they can hurt real warships, especially when working with shore fortifications and larger ships.  Just don't try to use them to replace your navy the way President Jefferson did!
Black Seas plays these as a "squadron"  they can move under sails or oars thought if moving under oars they can't fire. There are two options one with a light gun and another with a caronades.
Points I think these should get 10 Point like other small ships (counting the whole base as one ship) and then another 20 Points for the room.

From DaveS - Some Transport

Morning, and sorry that I can't think of any suitable 80s TV show related puns for this one.  I'm continuing work on my partisans, and as part of that, they needed a suitable commandeered ride.  Hence, I present a German Army truck, that has been commandeered to drive a dozen Frenchmen with SMG's around in.

The kit is from Rubicon, and went together really nicely.  It's a simple paintjob, and shows that this truck probably has been captured earlier, and never been repainted.

So there we are, a 28mm vehicle, which I believe is 20 points.

From Barks: Six sorceresses (55 points)

For access to the Teleporter, I present three villains and three heroes, of assorted sizes. They're all magical ladies from the Descent boardgame. I followed the game's artwork for colour choices.

Three villains

Ariad, demon spider lady

Zarihell, soul summoner

Dragged some washes together on her cloak-
worked surprisingly well!

Lady Farrow-
"Excuse me while I finish my... wine."

Three heroes

Dezra the Vile- antihero

Ravaella Lightfoot, gnome mage

Ulma Grimstone, dwarf alchemist

6x 28mm figures: 30 points
Teleporter use: 20 points
Sorceress bonus: 5 points
Skull-o-meter™: 9

AndrewB- The Snow Lord’s Treasury

For the treasure in the Snow Lord’s Treasury, I yet again found myself perplexed as to what to utilized for treasure or valued goods.   What I found, however, was a little project I’d primed many Januaries past, and a couple of the figures are certainly distributing some items more treasured than gold in the context!   These are a collection of Perry figures I ordered a few years ago to play a large Fistful of Lead game centered around the defense of the hospital located at Rorke’s Drift, January 22nd, 1879.  Surgeon Reynolds is posed with his case of medical supplies, and Chaplain Smith is distributing packages of  .577/450 ammunition for the defenders, undoubtedly extorting them to keep up the fire and not swear.

These seven figures, with our treasure boys in the first row, include lots of VC recipients. The varied uniforms reflect the motley collection of some of the defenders aside from B Company, 2nd Battalion, 24th Regiment of Foot, which makes the engagement rather more interesting.

These next figures are more from the 24th Foot, left to defend the hospital and supply dump at the Drift.  The contrast between the troop’s jackets/shirts and their white equipment really looked godawful before the wash, but thank jeebus for super diluted black pigment.

These figures are from I believe Perry’s Sudan line, but I’m using them to represent the ‘walking wounded’ recovering in the hospital who were pressed into service defending room-by-room. The uniforms probably aren’t perfect, but the plain uniform blouses seemed appropriate to me for their situation, and work to distinguish between the groups.

Lastly, a pair of group photos with all 18 figures(counting the double base as two). The basing material is the Arid Grasslands base-ready mix from Geek Gaming, available in North America from Footsore North America.  God knows where the tufts came from, but they seem to approximate South Africa fairly well, but perhaps a bit verdant for the hot January season.

The total for this post, 90pts for the miniatures and 20 for the chamber, is probably the largest sum I’ve gotten as of yet!

Happy Painting!
