From ClintB - 10mm Samurai (62 Points)

Well as I come to the end of this years Challenge I will have 1 more post after this (I hope), My spaceships. But first I have some 10mm Pendraken Samurai figures that will complete (until I find any more dirt cheap, ) my two Samurai armies.

First up 2 mounted Samurai messengers. No I have yet to settle on rules and while I have tried several not found any I like.

Then we have 5 bases of Samurai cavalry armed with Yari. No not lances as I am not sure lances wound work well with Japanese stirrups (I am sure someone will know and tell me)! 3 figures to a base to match my existing force. I have used DBA basing sizes until I settle on the rules ads I think this will suit most sets of rules and besides I loathe re-basing.

Lastly 7 bases of Samurai Infantry.  In with keeping with the rest of the armies I have settled on the same pose and figure on each base. This is just to make identifying troops easier. 2 of the bases nave naginata, although to me they lack the poles and therefore look more like No Dachi. So I will use them as such. 3 Bases with Katanas, 1 base of Bows and one base of spear (Yari). Each with 4 figures to a base.

I am lacking the sashimono back banners so will need to add some later. But as I currently have none in this scale I will have to pass until I get some. Probably at Salute.

Now I am toying with starting another 10mm Period so if in the comments you let me know which of the following you would prefer I will know what I am supposed to be collecting in the coming year all ready for next years Challenge!

1) WW1 Western Front (French and German)
2) WW1 Middle eastern ( Arab revolt, a friend has Turkish and British but he is not in a rush to paint them! )
3) Boer War (Boers only as I already have the British)
4) North west Frontier (Again I already have the Brits so this would just be the Afghanis)

Anyway any preference just add to the comments or ignore entirely if you choose.  Cheers Clint

    1. Thanks Peter. nappys is not an option. Although there is a club near me that is starting to collect 10mm Naps. But they are just not my thing at all.

  3. These look very nice Clint and I agree with Ian I would think there were 15mm if you hadn't said 10mm. I'm Looking at Pendraken for a project or two is the line this nice across the board?

    1. Thanks Adam. These are quite old Pendracken mouldings/Castings their newer ones are much better. But like most figures they do not look good without paint. I would advise painting them and then using a dark wash to pick out the details.

    1. Thanks Tams. My starships are now started.

I'll have to get a game in with these Samurai soon as I have two armies. Just gotta get the rules and terrain sorted.

  5. Great work, they look very dynamic. I would go for North west frontier, multi use Afghans and think of all those valleys and mountains to move through. Very un-nerving

    1. Thanks Martin. I do like Northwest frontier idea. I cannot think I have ever seen it fought at my club OR at a show so it could be very different. Of course once you have the Afghanis and the terrain no reason not to get some John company as well! I promise not to use "Carry on up the Khyber!" as my primary source material.

  6. Well done! I had a 10mm samurai collection for a while. Ended up selling it off, but I have fond memories of the scale and period. In terms of rules, I looked at a bunch as well, and the two I liked best were Taiko! (Flagship Games) and Battles in the Age of War (Peter Pig).

    1. Thanks David. I do have the Peter Pig rules but do not like them. Too similar to "Bloody Barons" and "Civil war Battles", to me a case of same meat different gravy. But have not (as yet) tried "Taiko". or "Killer Katanas". I just can't find a KK rule set cheap enough.

    2. Ah yes, I'd heard about that similarity but had never played those other rulesets, so I came into "Battles" with a clean slate.

KK was a very good ruleset, but *deeply* simulationist. Which may work for you. I like my rules a bit more "gamey," if you will. I have a copy of Taiko I'd be happy to give you, and I might still have my copy of KK as well. I'll dig around for it after work and let you know.

    4. Looks like I must've gotten rid of my copy of Killer Katanas. Boo. I do still have Taiko! though, if you're interested. Send your address to dlarkins78 [at] gmail and I'll calculate cost of shipping. :)

    5. I am suffering a load of stress in my life at the moment so I will say thank you but no thank you at the same time. I really do appreciate the very kind offer though.

      cheers Clint

  7. Great stuff Clint. I find Samurai super intimidating to paint, so congrats on doing such great work, at 10mm no less. Well done.

    1. Cheers Greg. I think the smaller the scale the easier samurai are to pint as you can miss out so much detail. For Me 10mm was the right choice as they are big enough to see, yet small enough that you need not worry about things like chin straps and lacing on the armour.

These look very good, and I really like the basing for the army too!

    1. Thanks David. I have no more to paint at present, but we all know that no wargames army is ever complete so if I see any cheap I will just have to get them.
