We've got a Bolt Action gameday next week and as I promised to hold a Commando inspired game I needed some German personalities painted up. These are the first 10 with another 10 underway that I'll hopefully finish during weekend to leave me a bit of time to finalize some terrain and still paint up some Napoleonics in the last days of the challenge!
All of the miniatures come from Warlord Games. The Feldgendarmerie, Gestapo and scientist are from their new Feldgendarmes and Guarding the Chateau blisters. There's also a surrendering Fritz (or a "traitor" caught by the Kettenhunder), an evil SS-officer and the freebie mini from their new Ostfront book who is definately not Sgt. Steiner. It seems that Warlord has a new sculptor in house as especially the surrendering soldier and the gestapo and scientist minis are a bit different in style compared to the other minis. Dimensionally they are a bit different and especially the faces are sculpted differently. And the change isn't to a good direction either.
One thing that I find quite funny with the Warlord Germans is the fact that with all of the "evil" characters like Gestapo and Waffen-SS officers they are always wearing these round Himmler style glasses. Maybe putting on the glasses instantly turns you into a prisoner shooting madman... You don't see these on too many regular soldiers, but most officers have them for example. Maybe it's some weird British humour that us dry (glass wearing) northeners don't understand :) We only do black humour like a match box celebrating the burning of Rovaniemi by retreating Germans in 1944. This was actually released by the provincial museum of Rovaniemi last Autumn for the 70 year anniversary.

That's enough of a history lesson, so it's time to get back to the painting desk then with 10 more guardsmen waiting. This time from Foundry and with no glasses that turn you into a baby eating monster...
Great work on these figures. I rather like the surrendering German :-)

Nice work Samuli :)
ReplyDeleteI must admit that when I saw the not-Steiner it made me think the surrendering figure might be Private Dietz, skipping through the forest trying to avoid stepping on the patches of sunlight on the ground to ensure good luck as they make their way back to their lines after being abandoned by Stransky.
That might be it :) But to make it clear there is absolutely no resemblance of any kind if any copyright people come asking :P
DeleteWell done Samuli! One can never have enough Germans... well ok, it depends on your point of view I guess ;-)
ReplyDeleteThe Feldpolizei definitely are a re-release of old Paul Hicks miniatures as well as the surrendering German. If I'm not totally mistaken the Gestapo guy also is one of the very first BAM miniatures. Paul is gone a long way indeed...
Well we Finns generally tend to love ze Germans so there can never be too many :) But painting mostly greys for a few months does tend to take it's toll.
DeleteOld masters being dug up could really explain it. The style is somewhat similar in the overall proportions and the uniforms to the never Bolt Action ones from Hicks, but the facial details are really lacking.
Lovely work! I'll back you up on the proposition that 15mm Germans and 28mm Germans qualify as two completely separate things.
ReplyDeletevery nice paint jobs.
ReplyDeleteThanks guys!
ReplyDeleteI like them all, perhaps it's because I wear evil glasses. Very nicely painted.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful painting!
