The camels themselves are, I think, still very good. Peter Gilder was very good at getting movement into his sculpting , particularly horses and these camels. The riders are getting a little long in the tooth design wise, but still just about serviceable "en masse"... when you have 75+ (The number I am looking at as a minimum required here) charging your square I am not sure you will be looking too closely at detail..
Right then , off to splash some more paint around, there are one or two extra Beja lying around that need completing :-).
From Curt:
Stonking beautiful work Dave, though 20 years is a somewhat long seasoning period! As you say the riders are a bit anachronistic, but the overall effect of the unit, especially with those wonderfully loping camels poses, is just fantastic. Also, I like how pale you went with the camels' coat/fur/hides - mine, I believe, are a tad too dark and I think I may go back and lighten them a touch.
I look forward to seeing what else you excavate from your lead reserves!
I continue to be in awe of the speed you churn out these figures whilst keeping the painting crisp and clean. I know nothing about the period so could I ask what the coloured dots on the tunics were for?
ReplyDeleteThey started initially as just patchwork covering holes as the the wearers were poor.. As things went on the White cloth JIbbah (the tunic here) became a sort of uniform with more regular coloured patches, the patches meaning the wearer was poor and pious and a follower of the Mahdi / Khalifa
DeleteGreat work again Dave, Your Camels always deliver
ReplyDeleteIan
cheers Ian
DeleteCamels! I have not painted one in about a year now and am missing it tremendously now I have seen these.
ReplyDeleteI might have to change my name as posting on the same day as you seriously puts all my painting in the shade. Terrific mate really terrific.
cheers Clint... as long as you don't have the "hump" with me! -- i will get my coat....
DeleteLovely work Dave, even if they are smelly, cantankerous camels! ;)
ReplyDeleteSomething's definitely wrong. This appears to be your only entry this week. I fully expect a 1k+ points bomb from you next week to make up for this appalling lapse :)
DeleteI was led astray by Guiness over the weekend..and fine game of Rugby on Sunday..sorry...
DeleteGuinness and rugby? Oh well, in that case you are forgiven :D
DeleteIt might even happen again this weekend!
DeleteGuinness washes away all sins!
DeleteGreat paintng Dave. I'm also a huge fan of the Gilder school, the sense of motion you get from units is superb. Hope you do more Gilder figures in the future.

DeleteItaly vs Scotland, best last minute of a game I've seen since England won the World Cup
DeleteJust piling on to the adulation of the camel coloring. I like the pale color with a few darker camels mixed in. Camel painting guide?
ReplyDeleteThe base colour is a desert brown..lighter colour is Vallejo Iraqi sand , with Ivory or white added for extra variation.. Simples..
DeleteVery well done! These camels look great.
ReplyDeleteThanks
DeleteIncredible as usual Dave - great stuff.
