Continuing our exploration of the Blue Zone we leave the dry plains of Judea for another stop off in the world of Descent: Legends of the Dark. For the Fantasy studio our offering is two of the PC models for this game -- Vaerix a Dragon hybrid and Syrus a human magician.
Vaerix - the dragon hybrid |
Syrus the magician and his sidekick! |
Once again these are very nice 40mm plastic castings with great dynamic poses and a wealth of interesting detail to play with. The fun in this pair was working with flame effects in Syrus' fireball and the choice of colours and skin tones for a "realistic lizard person" 😜
The magical bird is actually supposed to be a Harris Hawk with reference images taken from a hawk we met up with last weekend as part of my wife's birthday trip -- funny how everything can be used in support of this hobby! Certainly the size is about right 🦅
Points wise that's two 40mm figures plus the 20 point Fantasy Studio bonus. Next time it's my Jewish wars terrain points bomb which is lots of work so it may be a week or two -- until then keep up the good work and the cameras rolling!
Very nice painting, Simon!

Thanks Iain -- really appreciate it
DeleteWonderful brushwork, Simon. Love the eyes and the firehawk.
ReplyDeleteThanks Curt -- I'm still working on that reflected light effect -- still a bit blotchy, need to try doing it with a glaze rather than relying on dry-brushing I think
DeleteThey are lovely miniatures Simon and nicely painted
ReplyDeleteThanks Matt -- I can really recommend the models you get with the Descent games, really well scuplted and assembled -- make sure to prime them well however as they are a bit paint phobic!
DeleteVery nicely painted!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Benito!
ReplyDeleteBeautifully painted Simon.
ReplyDeleteThanks Ray -- perhaps these guys are too pretty for dungeon crawling 😂
DeleteVery nice work, Simon! I like them both very much, but the wizards fire hawk is excellent!
ReplyDeleteThanks David -- not sure the photos capture all the shades of red/organge/yellow/black 🔥 but it seemed to work well and it's a nicely done scuplt

ReplyDeleteThanks Teemu -- now need to get them off exploring
DeleteBrilliant brushwork, Simon! The eyes and the fire effect are fantastic, but I also like the skin on the Dragonborn, great painting!
ReplyDeleteThanks Martijn, I kept it quite simple brighter top scales and lighter belly and then tried to build up natural gradients of tone which came out quite well I think
DeleteGreat photography as well!
ReplyDeleteThanks Barks -- I can't recommend this Helicon Focus focus stacker program too highly -- really simple to use and great results, plus good advice from Curt on how to set up the shot
