From EdwardG: Baccus 6mm 1815 Brunswickers (125points)

Hi all,

Hope everyone is still healthy!

This last week I have only really had time to finish off some basing on my 2nd major project of the lockdown! Which is the Anglo-Allied Army for the 1815 campaign in Belgium. The project is currently split between a friend and I, and to begin with we are concentrating on getting Quatre Bras on the table. Afterwards, I plan to further work on the Orbats and the grand scheme is to eventually conduct a what-if campaign of 1815.

As for rules sets, we have picked up General d'Armee, and really enjoy it. I think for me it is the right mix of grand tactical decision making and granularity. Also, when playing, I find it looks like a Napoleonic battle (at least my impression of one!)

So far I have managed to paint up the 2nd Dutch-Belgian Division, and the first half of the Brunswick Corps. In the past two months I have finished of the second half of the Brunswick Corps, and the Dutch-Belgian Cavalry (for a future post). Next in the painting queue is the British and Hanoverian Infantry, with the British guns last. Sadly looking at the amount of time left I am not sure if I will get them done for the end of this Challenge. However, seeing the size of the armies in 1815, I am sure I will still be working on it for a few more Challenges to come.

As for this post I present the Brunswick Corp (well half of it at least). I have painted:

  • The command stand of the Duke, labelled as a Corps Commander
  • The two artillery batteries of Moll (only 1 gun during the Challenge) and von Heinemann
  • The 2nd Hussar Regiment
  • The Brunswick Uhlans
  • The Brunswick Avant Guard
  • Leib Guard Battalion
  • 1st Light Infantry Battalion
  • 2nd Light Infantry Battalion
  • Some additional skirmisher bases
The remainder of the infantry was painted before the Challenge began.

I have to confess, that I am the type of Napoleonic wargamer who likes the aesthetic of the period, but I am not that worried about counting buttons. Which means that I have added some flags to both the AvG and Leib Guard battalions. In all of the literature that I read in preparation for painting the Corps. Nowhere said that they carried banners, and in fact some specifically said they didn't. But to me a 6mm Napoleionic battalion without some sort of flag, just looks wrong on the table top. So I have crafted some suitably plausible flags in paint and  affixed them to my battalions.

I must admit that these were possibly the easiest of the troops from 1815 to paint. I was able to spray paint them black, which took care of almost all of the uniform and equipment! The AvG miniatures are not quite right, being AWI British infantry, working as proxies. Sadly Baccus does not yet make formed infantry wearing the Jägerhut.

Some further pictures:

Points wise, I have calculated the following tally:

  • 4x32 man battalions = 64pts
  • 15+1 skirmishing figures = 8pts
  • 4 guns + 16 crewmen = 12pts
  • 41 mounted Generals and cavalry = 41pts
Total = 125pts

By my admittedly possibly biased calculations, I do believe I have exceed my points target!! :D

I hope to be able to post more soon! Stay safe all!

Best,
Ed

From DrQ: Kharadron Overladies (50 points)

As I continue to work on my great beast for its eponymous lair, I painted up some custom all-female Kharadron Arkanauts—Kharadron Overladies if you will.

The heads for these Kharadron Overladies are from an Etsy store called FlagshipGamesUS. They looked a little small when I first got them, but they wind up looking fine when actually on the bodies. Also, I used swords rather than axes for the whole squad. I have another box of Arkanauts lying around, and if I build them up as a male force I'll give them all the axes (conversely, I might build the other box as a Kharadron Blood Bowl team).

In order to differentiate the leader more easily, I used the topknot from a spare Stormcast Eternal head I had lying around.

Other than the head swaps, I've left the models as-is. The armour suites that the Kharadron wear are quite padded so any differentiation of silhouette would be hidden by the the padding. Additionally, I didn't really think that the usual "all women in heels" aesthetic that is found in so many wargmaes was something that the no-nonsense Kharadron would really have any time. A lack of beards would be enough. I found the post "Female representation in wargaming" by Between the Bolter and Me really helpful in making these design decisions.

As far as points, these are ten 28mmm foot soldiers for 50 points total.

Now back to the giant hulk of the Ironclad!

From MartinC Some Randoms and a Proof of Concept (95 pts)

Some i've been clearing some space for the home run. WW1 finished (that's lie), Vietnam finished (also a lie), ACW (spot a trend here).

So these are a few randoms that were cluttering up the desk

3 mid medieval longbow men (Crusader from a lucky bag)

Nice to paint and will add to my Templar collection

One of the 1st films I ever saw on the cinema was "At the Earth's Core" in about 1976. Proper old school romp. These 3 figs from Antediluvian Miniatures and are Peter Cushing, Doug McClure (you will know him from such films as.....) and the pneumatic Caroline Munroe - a go to damsel if the main acting role was being barely dressed (see also The Golden Voyage of Sinbad).

Next up some Chinese civilians, these are great figures from Tsuba miniatures and will be useful from Boxer rebellion to Chinatown gangster games

I particularly like the guy selling pushalong toys

And now to the next part. We all have collection of buildings that occupy more space than our soldiers. They fall into 2 categories. Beautiful and massive set piece buildings, see Miles' Stalingrad posts. THen are are houses, they look nice, provide scenery and obstacles. But we often don't fight in them and they are the backdrop. I have loads of these and they occupy tonnes of space. I need the space back so I had an idea

So I made a standard 2 storey building, think brownstone or Uk terraced house

THis one has a flat roof and pasted on brick with doors and windows made from mdf bases. Instead of glueing it all together the roof is slot in and the walls are joined with gaffer tape. Which means

If you take the roof off it folds flat! I can now fit every basic building I need into a tiny space. I added corner stones to obscure the corners If you want sloping roof then simple add gable ends. Make it posh with cut out windows and doors, a much better paint job and even annexes.
I think I've invented a thing.

Scores

16 x 28mm figs = 85
2 x hand carts = 5pts (not hard to do)
1 pop up building = 1/4 cube when erected = 5pts.

Right off to make a better house

From SanderS: Rodents calling Witching Service! (35 points)

 Hoi,

Arthur and myself would like to skip some Challenge rooms and get to the Oubliette fast so I have painted up a (vaguely) female figure and some companions to go along.

Remember the Resin 3D printed Star Wars figures I entered as Curtgeld at the start of the Challenge? Well the same company (perikles.be) does also sell Animal Kingdom figures designed by Duncan Shadow with his permission. Man are they cute, so I ordered 3 figures: one for Arthur, one for Hugo (my youngest son) and one for my wife. The latter is a female wizard/ sorcerress or whatever you call it, only she is also evidently a Mouse!

Arthur gets another mouse but this one is a Ranger for game purposes and he has called it Rover.

The youngest got a Squirrel, which he's calling "Eekje" which is not pronounced as it looks in English the Ee sounding like the A in aking (I am aking all over).

Anyway I digress, these are briliant figures to paint, crisp and full of lively detail and the service of the firm is awesome. I immediately ordered a second load of stuff, hopefully I can get some of the contents painted in these last weeks.

Pointswise I am going for 28mm scale and that gets me another 35 points all round.

Cheers Sander

A Bit of Gaul.......Matthew Williamson 70 points

 A bit of Gaul!

Earlier in the week hit a black spot, mostly because I am slogging through a big order, so stopped made a cuppa and switched tact to a few model kits, and some Romans and Gauls, which are part of my western Aulerci Federation Tribes project.

28mm figures are Victrix

I have about thirty figures to go in the Gallic tribes project and it will be complete, so a further 14 figs join the fray, bringing the count to well over the 300 figure mark.

Fourteen 28mm figures @ 5 points = 70 points

cheers
Matt

From Barks: Dragon (15 points)

A quick monster today; a dragon from Descent. I'm going to try and smash out a fair bit of this boardgame in my remaining time. After the base, this is 99% Contrast over a white undercoat; wings Aggaros Dunes, claws Skeleton Horde, then scales Flesh Tearers Red. I picked out eyes, teeth, face highlights- done.

1x 28mm monster (2x3" base): 15 points?

+7 skullz

From DaveS - Amber but no Dinosaurs (56pts)

Yet more Wild West Exodus watchers today.

First, we have the Grey Pulse Myriad (well 7).  These are one of those kits in plastic where clearly the company making them was still figuring out how to cut up the models and put them on a sprue.  They are...interesting to put together.  This is made up for by the fact that they are absolutely lovely to paint.  Crisp, not too much clean up required, and clearly fun.  The unit includes a second "Specialist" model with heavy weapon.

The second model is the Amber Alpha.  A real powerhouse I am told, and a beautiful resin sculpt.  I'm still not totally convinced by the technique I used on the flames on her hands, but for now, she is done.

All in, that's another 8 40mm models for 56 points.

From StuartL - A Miscellany at Graveyard Beach - 251 Points

Hello all,

Recently work has been irregular, unpredictable and generally taking up far too much time that could be spent on more valuable things like painting minis. Between working online, meetings and other such time consuming things, actually being able to sit down and paint for any length of time has become a bit of a novelty. Similarly, since I have been spending too much time in front of my PC for work, I haven't really felt like sitting down and typing out comments for every post on the challenge recently. My apologies to everyone. I do try to look at everyone's work, there have been some great entries in the past few weeks. So if I didn't comment on your submission, I apologise.

Which brings me to this post. Rather than submit several entries over a couple of days, I have put them all together into one submission to save some time and effort.

First of all, here are some Weird World War II US Rocket Infantry.

The models are from the Dust Tactics game. I bought into the game heavily when Fantasy Flight was running it, as it was available from Amazon here in Japan at a reasonable price. Sadly, FF decided to drop the game, and then there were a series of debacles with Battlefront and the designer of the game running a kickstarter. The models are that soft kind of plastic that a lot of board game makers favour, but they look pretty good when given a lick of paint.

For five 28mm minis, these should add 25 Points to my total. And, as WWW2 is a new genre from me for this challenge, they add a Squirrel point to my tally too.

Earlier in the challenge, I painted up 5 old GW Lizardmen Skinks. Since then I dug out a bunch more of them from the hobby stash and painted them up too.

Here we have 42 of the old minis, still on their square bases. On the minis posted earlier, I had used a green wash on the skin, but on this batch I went with brown. After comparing the two, I find that the brown gives a much nicer shading to the figures and makes them look more natural. (As far as fictional sentient lizard folk go). I'll probably revisit the first batch at some point with a brown wash.

For 42x 28mm minis, these add 210 Points to my total and to my GW side duel as well.

When visiting my local dollar (100 yen actually, but it's roughly the same) store a week or so ago, I found some bags of plastic palm trees that looked like they were a reasonable size. I picked up five bags and brought them home to see how they would look as terrain.

They are a still a little on the small side perhaps and a bit rough around the edges, but good enough for the gaming table. The pirate figure in the picture is just there to give a sense of scale. I have since gone back to the shop and bought up the rest of their stock, so I should have enough of these to make a reasonable amount of scatter terrain.

The trees fill a roughly 3" by 3" by 4" area of the table, or roughly 1/6th of a terrain cube, so should score me 3 Points.

Finally, the part of my entry related to the Graveyard Beach section of the Chambers of Challenge. Some Pirate Ghosts.

These five spooky scoundrels are from Reaper's Bones line of minis and are cast in a translucent green plastic. I quite liked the look of it as it was, so I painted up the scenic bases and weaponry on the figures, but left the bodies and clothing more or less untouched.

To try to give them a bit more definition, I added a thin coat of Vallejo Transparent Green to the 'skin' areas of the figure. It doesn't show up in the pictures very well, but I think it helps.

Each of these undead pirates has a skull on their base (their own perhaps?) as well as a mix of flotsam and wreckage.

As for points, I am not sure how to score these. As 28mm minis, they should come in at 25 points, but large parts of them are deliberately unpainted. So perhaps scoring them at half the usual rate? That should get me 13 Points, rounded up. If one of the minions disagrees, they can alter my score as necessary. I believe there was some mention of bonus points for the chamber if the undead had a nautical theme? There are also 5 Skullz for my side duel.

So, in total this submission should get me 251 Points, which I believe puts me over my target for the challenge with three weeks remaining.

My running Duels totals:
GW Points - 1016
Skullz - 456
Squirrels - 18

From Curt: More Pig-Faced Orcs! (With More Oink!) (34 Points)

The Orc's Pit.

Well, as I promised from my first post of the Challenge, here are two classic Pig-Faced Orcs to join their venerable Minifig forebear.

These models are from Otherworld Miniatures. I think they're brilliant. They manage to convey the old school design of early D&D, while also possessing a contemporary grittiness about them. I'm really looking forward to doing more. The big fella with the flail is 'Chieftain FoulTusk', while the other, with the fancy snouted helm, is his Champion, 'BadBoi'.

I wanted to try a flaking paint effect on their shields, but I'm not entirely convinced. The yellow is not horrible, but I shouldn't have used red for the other one as it simply looks like it's spattered with gore (not entirely out of character, but not what I wanted).  I'll give it another try when I get a resupply from Otherworld.

Also, in the spirit of terrain amortisation, I have them stomping around in some of my kickstarter-acquired Dwarven Forge Cavern tiles (whose cost, by the look of their website, is almost equivalent in their weight in gold). I hope to be using these more as I just picked up 'Otherworld Fantasy Skirmish' and the 'Thud & Blunder' rules to try some dungeon adventuring.

As to points? Well, the chamber bonus gives me 20, the two lads are around 40mm tall, that'll  give me 14 points for them, so that gives me 34 points total.

Now, after taking off my socks and mittens to do the math, I believe this entry will pip me past my goal of 800 points. Hooray!! I think I'm going to open a bottle to celebrate!

Okay, I have to get back to level 3 as I want try for the Laboratory, so off I go to dig for another female model for the Sorceress...
