First up is some Flames of War Mid-war Italian Bersaglieri weapons teams. These were required to build a legal Bersaglieri platoon after the release of the updated Mid-war books some time ago. As I only use the Bersaglieri in support of my DAK they've been sitting on the back-burner for ages now. I still need another two AT guns to finish this platoon off...
Next is a pair of Russian 45mm AT guns, also to top up a platoon after the updated books were released. Very easy to paint which is just as well as they are next to useless on the table unless you can ambush with them...
And finally a pair of Warhammer Fantasy Chaos Hounds to round out a set I've been collecting. These last two (Scorpion Tail and Undead) are quite hard to find compared to the rest and escaped me until just recently.
When I was painting Scorpion Tail my daughter asked why he was purple. My reply was "Because he's a chaos hound!" (duh!). She didn't seem in the slightest bit disturbed by the fact he's a dog with a scorpion tail though. Go figure...
Here's the rest of the pack and their handler from last year's Challenge...
All up that's 30 x 15mm infantry, 9 x 15mm guns and 2 x chaos hounds.
By my reckoning that's another 106 points for my tally.

Cheers,
Millsy

I love that your daughter was more interested in the chaos hound's colour than the fact it had a scorpion's tail. Makes perfect sense to me (and it IS a lovely shade of purple)!
The Soviet 45mm 'door knockers' are very nice (the crews actually look like they're praying not to be noticed), but I'm quite taken by your Bersegliere weapons teams. I really like seeing these oft-ignored forces being done. I'm curious, what is the black bits on the bases? Is that a type of dark foliage?
A great bit of cleanup here, Mr. Mills. 106 it is!
Thanks Curt! The "black bits" are indeed a very dark green foliage. It doesn't photograph too well against the light bases unfortunately.
ReplyDeleteNice work on all of these. My favorite would have to be the Russian AT guns.
ReplyDeleteThe Bersaglieri look great. I also have a company (still in the Box) I should get around to painting. But somehow I doubt I ever will.
ReplyDeleteI do like your flames of war stuff it is very nice. Chaos hounds less so due to bad GW experiences.... I am still scarred for life.
Love the flames of war minis, the dogs are also great
ReplyDeleteIan
Old school GW chaos love it never developed a love for FoW but as a painter got to love the detail on the figures
ReplyDeleteObviously I love those dawgs!! The purple adds a nice old school touch, when GW figures were colourful and a bit crazy
ReplyDeleteCase closed on the chaos hounds then? They are lovely, scorpion tails and all. And I'm sure there will be more Oldhammery goodness to catch your attention down the track.
ReplyDeleteA great mixed bag Millsy and I do like those doggies :)
ReplyDeleteThose Italians are perfectly turned out as ever, great paint job!
ReplyDeleteAnd as always, your paint jobs on old school GW sculpts are top notch, I loved these little fellas when they came out, I used to have them with the dark elf handler..... long lost now sadly.
Very nice! The terrain is perfect for all of these miniatures.
ReplyDeletearen't you cooking on charcoal there mate, you're on a roll! Great stuff, the beasties really are fab!
ReplyDeleteGreat figures - the Italians really "pop" for me
ReplyDeleteAnother typically eclectic Millsy mix alright ... nice to see the Italians ..
ReplyDeleteStunning work Millsy! Those Bersaglieri are absolutely nice and I quite like your purple Chaos dog.
ReplyDeleteGreat work Millsy and the Bersaglieri really are interesting!
ReplyDeleteChristopher
Another great entry Millsy. The bersaglieri are wonderful!
ReplyDeleteYour WWII stuff looks excellent, as do the dogs - a scary pack.
ReplyDeleteGreat looking teams Millsy. I do like seeing the Italians getting some love and you've done a nice job on these. The Chaos hounds are my favorites. I've been collecting some of the older Warhammer models myself this year and can appreciate the difficulty you've had in completing your collection. Lovely stuff!
ReplyDeleteThat's a nice mixed bunch of entries! I've always found the Italian army (and miniatures) facinating. Somewhat eccentric and with impeccable style and sometimes hopelessly outdated.
ReplyDeleteI have to disagree with you on the 45mm. Great deterrents to tank assaults. With small caliber AT guns you just have to resist the urge to actually shoot them outside of defensive fire unless you really have a juicy target like Hanomags or some really lightly armoured tanks available. Put them behind your infantry, but within 8" of the line and the lower AT won't matter most of the time as you get side shots. Plus it keeps things like Stuarts etc. from peppering you at a range of 16.1"
Your description of the 'use' of the 45mm is precisely why I avoid FoW at all costs... ;)

DeleteYeah it's a bit silly with all the abstractions. But then again it's not too far off from how light AT guns would operate in reality as well. Hidden in the line with infantry and opening fire at close range at vulnerable locations in the tanks when they are pushing into the positions. Against softer targets you'd start shooting earlier and the guns were light enough to manouver with infantry to provide fire support against more fortified positions when attacking etc.
DeleteA great eclectic collection- I really like your hound pack.
ReplyDeleteLovely stuff all around. That one sad looking hound with the thin face and the bits hanging out ... I take it he was a rescue dog?
ReplyDeleteNice work, Millsy!
ReplyDeleteI really like your war hounds and congrats on finishing the pack! The Soviet guns and crew are my favorite from the colors of the gunners to the basework! ; (
