Hi all,
In my last Celt post I had finished off the small unit of 3 chariots. This time around I am finishing off my Naked Fanatics. The Fanatics I felt would be quick to do using contrast paints. The figutres selected were a mix of Warlord metals with a few Victrix plastics thrown in as I didnt have enough metals.
I chose one of the Victrix figures to be a standrad bearer. The standard is pretty nice but being plastic I felt it was a little weak and was worried it might snap during a game. I delved into my box of bits and found the remnants of one of the metal pikes I had cut down to make the spears. I made the spears metal for the same reason. I cut the top and bottom pieces away from the shaft and drilled through the hand. I then super glued the shaft into the hand. Using a micro drill i drilled small holes in the head and bottom pieces and super glued onto the metal shaft.
The next step was to undercoat the figures. From experience I use Citadels Wraith Bone spray. I prefer this to the Grey Seer for the colour effect at the end.
The figures were then fully coated with Citadel Contrast Guilliuman Flesh mixed 50/50 with medium to thin the colour.
I had picked up a sheet of Warlord games dry rub decals for the 'Blue Paint' on the fanatics. Although a bit fidly and some slipped while applying the end result was pretty pleasing.
I didnt have any decals for the Warlord shileds so i hand painted those and the Victrix shields I used the leftovers from the Chariot decal sheet.
This then left the painting of the minor details on the figures. Belts, weapons and jewelry inlcuding arm bands and torques.
The hair was done using contrast paints and the effect was excellent. I would like to make an observation here. I am a person who really prefers metals to plastics. In the past the early plastics lacked detail. I have had my plastic Romans and ECW for over 10 years. The Victrix figures I have started to accumate have been very pleasing in the level of detail and the figures are very dynamic. The standard Bearer is a Victrix Plastic as is the Guy holding teh Roman Head and standing on the shield. The level of detail is amazing with beautiful facila features and even eyebrows!
As mentioned before, my Armies have been based for Art de la Guerre (ADLG), but I have based them so that we can play Hail caesar as well. In ADLG a unit is a single base of which I had one already. However, for Hail caesar i needed atleast one base which needed to be expanded to 4 bases. For this project I have done three bases of 6 figures for a total of 18. These plus the 6 already done will give me a single unit of 24 for Hail caesar and 4 units in ADLG.
The figures have been based to match the rest of the Army and the new Chariot units.
This project was 18 x 28mm Figures @ 5 points ea for a total of 90 points.
I think this post should maybe be given an NSFW warning, there are a lot of parts just swinging in the breeze there. Cracking work on these fanatics, they should really make the Romans think twice. The step by step showing how you converted the standard was helpful. I have had far too many plastic banners and poles snap before models even got onto the table.
I believe it is common practice to reward hand painted shields, so I've adjusted your score a little.
Wonderful Celts Scott -- and great to see how well the contrast paints worked for you. I agree with you on the quality of Victrix scuplts -- there's loads of detail that paints up nicely (too much detail if you ask me on the Roman legionaries I'm currently working on!)
ReplyDeleteLook forward to seeing some of them posted up here Simon.

Great bunch of naked Celts. Lovely work on flesh, sheilds and basework. I’ve been working with the Victrix Late Romans and agree that the detail is wonderful and poses very dymanic.
ReplyDeleteNice brushwork on the sky clad lads, Scott! I did the shield designs too!
