I'm taking the studios very literally this year. Nine arena combatants that I got to experiment with Jugula- I've yet to play a game. Fortunately for my wallet, these are soft plastic 1:72 from Italeri. They took Contrast and Speedpaint quite well. If I was to go further, I'd shade and highlight the metal.
Welcome to the Painting Challenge. Here you will find the fabulous, fevered work of miniature painters from around the world. While participants come from every ethnicity, gender, age and nationality, they have three things in common: they love miniatures, they enjoy a supportive community, and they want to set themselves against the Challenge. This site features the current year's event along with the archives of past Painting Challenges. Enjoy your visit and remember to come back soon.

From Barks: Gladiators (Swords & Sandals)(56 points)
Swords & Sandals set (20 points)
Another great entry, Barks. Jugula sounds like an interesting game, so hopefully these figures will give you a chance to try it out. The figures look nicely detailed for soft plastic, though I must say that the bear looks tiny.

Nice paint jobs and a genius idea to use them as the sculpts look great for soft plastics
ReplyDeleteThe proportions are nice, and the sculpting took Contrast surprisingly well.
DeleteGreat work Barks. I agree on both the bendy plastic and the bear. The skinny 20mm figures work well for gladiators
ReplyDeleteSome of the figures are a bit casual, but they'll suffice.
DeleteGreat skin tones on these Barks, but those are some rather odd looking wild animals (maybe they have been starved to be more ready for the gladiators!)
ReplyDeleteThe lion is nice, but the bear is a bit underwhelming.
DeleteNice gladiators, Barks! :)
ReplyDeleteJust a quick note - you seem to be working off the old version of the studio map. Westerns got moved to the Blue pass zone, so you've only done three studios in the Green zone.
I did that before it was officially changed! That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
DeleteVery nice. I wouldn’t have guessed that they are 1/72. Sculpts are pretty good, and they’re painted well!
ReplyDeleteThank you very much!
DeleteHaha! Love the 'Airplane' reference. Those Airfix models are really good and you've done an excellent job on them, Barks. I especially like the skintones on the African chaps. I found Jugula to be fiddly but fun. If you want a stonkingly good gladiator game try out GF9's 'Spartacus' - it's brilliant.
ReplyDeleteThat may be the arena game I'm looking for...
DeleteSoft plastic you say! Excellent work on these Mr B!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteYeah, wow - soft plastic? Well done.
ReplyDeleteI think they hold up pretty well.
DeleteGreat work! You are sure these 1:72 and not 72mm?
ReplyDeleteHa! Thank you!
DeleteThey are quite fabulous figures and a good solid Job on them Barks, next a arena?
ReplyDeleteCheers
Matt
It's a long way off...
DeleteFor 72s, those are impressive, Barks! I may have to do a take back for all the ho/00 troops I let my son abscond with! Didn't believe these were that tiny till I noticed the familiar small flash on Spear shafts. Very well done!
ReplyDeleteDeflashing is a pain...
DeleteGreat gladiators Barks!
ReplyDeleteThanks, Sander!
DeleteJust catching up - really impressive Gladiators
ReplyDeleteCheers, Kerry!
