My third stop at Challenge Island is in the site named after me: Benito's Brook. The theme behind this spot is to paint something related to an impossible or heroic feat of arms and was mainly inspired in my project last year of the WWII British Paratroopers resisting against all odds at Arnhem.
My entry today is aligned with one of the two projects of this year's Challenge related to Infamy! Infamy! the Ancient rules of Too Fat Lardies that hopefully will see the light next Spring.
As you may all now, Vercingetorix was a Gallic leader of the tribe of the Arverni that bravely revolted most of the peoples in the Gaul and put at very serious risk all of Caesar's achievements in 52 BC. After being defeated at Gergovia, he retreated into the fortress of Alesia with 80,000 men while expecting another large army to come to his rescue.
Caesar besieged the city surrounding the perimeter with an impressive double-walled palisade spanning over 16 km. Following the arrival of the relief Gaul army, Vercingetorix's besieged army made a foray from the walls to try breaking the encirclement and to conitnue the war against Caesar... but both armies were defeated by the Romans and Vercingetorix had to retreat again into the city walls to avoid total destruction.
Short of supplies and without hopes of receiving any additional external help, Vercingetorix and the other rebel leaders surrendered to Caesar, marking the end of the Gallic Wars and the final subjugation of the Gaul as a Roman province.
The model here presented is a Gallic Chieftain of Wargames Foundry and represents a Gallic leader sat on a shield and carried by four men, all metal and 28mm sized.
The sculpting is of high quality, much better in fact than the old models made in the 90s that I had been painting during this Challenge.
With this entry I cover now three spots of the map, so my plan is to quickly move in the fourth of the Path of History and the make a booking at Sarah's balloon to fly to a final spot before presenting to the Snow Lord.
Also with this entry I bag 55 points to y Challenge score:
- 5 models @5 points each = 25 points
- Benito's Brook extra = 30 points

Great work Benito! There is nothing like visiting your very own Challenge Island location, right? And you have done so in style, with a great back story as well as some fantastic brushwork on some lovely figures. The patterns on some of the clothing are particularly nice, and the gold/brass helmets really stand out. And who doesn't look cool being carried around on a shield? What has happened to society that we can't summon an Uber to move about in this way these days?
55 points for you Benito - well done.

ReplyDeleteGreat submission Benito - love the models and the background history was very interesting.
ReplyDeleteI am also now off to my own Challenge Island location :-)
Your Vercingetorix looks absolutely awesome Benito! Really dig the patterned trousers and tunics. But to paraphrase a certain chieftain from Asterix: What do you mean, Alesia? I don't even know where Alesia is! Nobody knows where Alesia is!
ReplyDeleteLOL! I was tempted to paint the chief with the Abraracurcix colors
DeleteExcellent Benito!

Lovely job, the piece looks almost melancholy as if they're about to surrender.
