From RhysH - Marvel Crisis Protocol (35 points)

I've been on the road since the new year so Rhys' models have been piling up as he beavers away at his backlog. Rhys got a lot of Crisis Protocol models from AMG for Christmas. He played a demo game at Adepticon last year and loved it. Two of my friends also play. We have not managed to get a single game in during the last year. Still, he wanted more models. I used photo editing to take out the background on these. I think I don't like it but I'm interested in what everyone else thinks.

The whole group. Very super-y and Hero-y.

These models are incredibly difficult to build and very fragile. Carnage is literally hanging off a couple of strings there. By the way, Rhys knows I'm not a "super hero guy" so when he paints them up and they are ready for pictures he puts their game cards under the models so I can post the right names here. He's a problem solver.

This guy is, cleverly, named Lizard. Also Curtis Connors.

To me he looks like he's fleeing in terror but I am told that I am wrong and I can accept that.

Next up is Carnage.
Badass but hanging by a thread.

Carnage is known for such things as (checks notes) Sadistic Glee and Painting the Town Red.

This is Beast. Rhys went metallic blue, which is a nice touch, I think.

This is Green Goblin. Another model that is barely supported. Very dynamic and cool looking on the table but, difficult to put together.

The smoke trail looks so firm and supporting but it's all illusion. Rhys and I had to go several rounds on getting him all "stable". I shudder to think what will happen on a gaming table.

Last up is Mystique.

Rhys made the face hard to see on purpose since she's a shape shifter.

More of the semi-metallic blue to try to match her in the movies. I think he nailed it.

That's 5 32mm+ minis for 50 35 points.

Good work here Rhys on some nice models. I think my favourite is Mystique - I'm a big fan of the old Brotherhood of Evil Mutants. I'm going to correct the math here though as 40mm models are worth 7 points each.

Thanks for this Rhys and 35 points for your tally!

From JamieM - Kings of War Northern Alliance (110 points)

I thought I painted some figures for this army in the last challenge, but a quick scan of previous posts tells me it was two years ago that I last worked on this army!

My how times flies when new games appear and projects are rudely cast aside….. anyway, there’s a new version of Kings of War that’s just been released so I decided that I should get on with it. First - some troops, tribesmen style.

These are the foot troops of the army, hardy tribesmen from the frozen North.

They’re pretty standard stats wise in the game and I do like a good multibase, so on one they went.

A mix of leathers and fur for their garb.

Next up, some snow trolls. I painted a unit a couple of challenges ago and now they have some friends.

Nice and simple paint scheme and they’re ready to hide under a frozen bridge and bother some billy goats.

Multibased again and some weapon swaps as they only come as one pose with a choice of two heads and two arms (rock and club)

And the family photo:

As for the scoring, I make it 15x28mm figures for 75 points and 5x 40mm figures for 35 to give me 110 total.

Jamie, I do love me some rank-and-flank fantasy battles and these models look great. It seems you rarely see snow bases on fantasy figures but you've done a super job here. I really dig the Tribesmen and the Snow Trolls look suitably tough!

One-hundred-ten for your tally!

From Curt - Thirty Years War Bohemian Pike & Shotte (168 Points)

During my last visit to Greg's he showed me his Thirty Years War efforts from Warlord Games' 'Epic' range. As typical, his painting was fabulous, and they really looked the business all ranked up with an impressive hedge of pikes. I was so impressed by them that I wanted to give them a go myself as I was looking for any excuse to collect pike & shotte for this period. As Greg had already started in with the Imperialists, I suggested I give the Protestants a go, starting with the ill-fated Bohemians from the beginnings of the conflict.

I managed to find one of the all-in starter box sets on deep-discount, and so here are my first efforts with an infantry pike & shotte 'frame' from the range.

I like how shoulder-to-shoulder the troops are designed for each strip. I find this makes the painting of them a little easier. That being said, I thought it odd that the front rank of the pike figures are designed with a 45 degree action pose, whereas the shotte has been designed in marching, or at-rest attitudes.

Of course I couldn't leave well enough alone, so I started pillaging the commanded shotte portion of the frames (which are posed as loading and firing) in order to make the handgunners a little more dynamic, and thereby blending better with their active, pike-armed comrades. As this process was a little fiddly, I'll probably do this just for a few units, maybe to denote veteran status.

I primed the strips dark brown and then drybrushed them light grey and finally white to help the Contrast paints to do their thing. I then went in with a small brush to pull-out some details and add further highlights. Similar to my other small-scale projects I only paint details on the front rank, keeping the following ranks fairly minimal from the shoulders down. I figure, there's no point painting stuff that nobody sees. I like the more desaturated look to the figures, but we'll see how the process holds up when I get more done down the road. I think I'll want around 10 of these units to make a creditable force.

As to basing, I wanted something a bit more flexible to work with different rulesets.  Warlord has their own 'Pike & Shotte' rules, which are a descendant of Rick Priestly's venerable but still excellent 'Warmaster' system. Those rules have each unit made up of four bases, allowing for various formations to be reflected depending on their arrangement.

While this is great, our group also enjoys the 'Too the Strongest' rules (the 'For King and Parliament' variant for this period) where we've been having fun making-up single bases to depict units, allowing us to make mini-dioramas to add colour. We also have found that the single-base approach also makes gameplay a little faster, being as players only have to move one thing as opposed to several bits for a unit. Horses for Courses!

Anyhoo, as the bases that come with the box are plastic, I contacted Precision Wargame Supplies to have them cut me steel bases as replacements. I did this as I like the added weight that the steel bases provide, and they also allow me to use magnets (without messing up the polarity) for the large sabot basing I had in mind for the large single bases.

This led me to contact our friendly terrain Minion Byron (also of Northern Lights Terrain) to have him cut me a few bespoke sabot bases as a proof of concept. These sabot bases are 190 x 60, with cutouts for 3mm magnets to keep the steel-shod figures in place. I also put in a cutout for a unit label. I still have a few tweaks I want to do, but I think these will serve nicely.

One thing about the scale of these figures. They call them 'Epic', intoning that they are around 10-12mm, like their earlier efforts, but these are actually true 15mm (foot to eye). So, with that being the case there are 80 foot figures in this formation, plus two mounted officers, which should put total points to 168. If our minion is good with this then we'll need to update Greg's previous work on these to bring his into alignment (I can do that). :) Also, this will allow me to hit my points target and also give me another Squirrel Point for the roster.

Thanks Dallas for letting me roll with the Thursday crew!

- Curt

This is indeed a Bohemian Rhapsody Curt! The Warlord Epic stuff is so great and your brushwork really makes it come alive. I like the conversions you've done to make the "shotte" a bit more dynamic too. I'm not surprised that Greg's been able to suck you into a new scale and period, he's very good at that isn't he...

That's 168 for your tally!

From IainW: 28mm Napoleonic Austrian Grenz regiment no15 (120 points)

So finishing up a contract and being ill has hit my commenting, apologies but I've managed to finish a unit, here is a Grenzer regiment for my Austrian army, regiment no 14, they are a mix of a Perry metal Grenzer command and the rank and file, are you've guessed it, Wargames Atlantic Prussian reserve infantry, the army deal that keeps on giving, with carved off gaiters and Perry plastic French hussars later shako which I think looks close enough?

The first of two units, it's always nice to do pink facings I think and the red cloaks and blue trousers makes a nice contrast with the all white Austrian line units , the black straps are also a nice change. All in all I'm pretty happy with these economy Grenzers, flag by Victrix.

And here they are photo bombed by Gregs favourite terminator! I added spikey bits when I corrupted him into the service of Khorne, he doesn't count as he was painted last century!

Points 24 x 5 is 120

All the best

Iain

Wow these guys look very cool! There is a lot about this post that hits me where I live. First - conversions using spare bits from other kits, I love it. Second - Khorne. I have a couple of those crazy Rogue Trader Terminators as well and I can tell you that I have no plans to paint 'em, but I am a very recent convert to the cult of the Blood God and have been busy priming up old Berzerkers and buying stuff on eBay. Might see some of it in this Challenge, who knows!

A well-deserved 120 points for you!

From DaveD: Yes it’s more Bolsheviks comrades (160pts)

Back to Bolsheviks this week It’s time for more firepower , and those that know me , know that one isn’t a number I agree with. So here we have two classic Maxim guns one for the front line and one to put at the back to keep everyone going forward. I found some thin brass wire to create a mound of spent cartridges as well. I love those little additions.  Copplestone castings as usual

Only a “few” more required to recreate this scene on a train !

Next are 4 new banner men. Each banner has a unique number or letter . Each unit will get one to aide identification while gaming.

I drew these up and fed them through ChatGPT to enhance them. Cut out PVA together and add to some piano wire staffs.

Part 2 - Messing about in boats :-

Having played a few BoB games recently that involved harbours, docks and rivers I decided to up the game on warships. I also have some Bolo sailors in the paint queue, so time to sort something out.

I enlisted the help of the laser room team at Pendraken to cut me some hull shapes that I could sandwich together and then work on.

I have some guns and the white painted sailors from another paddle steamer, the guns are by HLBS, the sailors were Pulp IIRC. The guns are magnetised to make them moveable so I added a magnetised turntable to the deck. I need to pick up a few more gun options for the future (order placed).

Six hull shapes 300 mm long up to 75 at the widest point, PVA glued together and clamped over night. These are then sanded down and sealed with PVA. I then gave a coat of acrylic and polyurethane primer to properly seal/prime them.

The captain, bosun and ships wheel are from Ironclad and needed painting up, but after a bit of modification they fit in fine. I added hollow tube into the hull to be able to insert a removable mast for storage purposes.

Just a basic open superstructure for now

There is another tube added to the stern to take flags

I added hand rails at the bow and stern area adding in pins and then some steel  thread. The funnel was made from a larger air intake from the Ironclad range with a big of judicious melting in the crucible to take the bit that was too large off. Then a simple file down.

Pretty sure Commander O’Grady enjoys his new posting !

I have left it with a simple paint job for the hull and decking

The mast was made from solid brass rod, a cross member was added and hollow tube to hang a battle flag . These bits were all soldered together. The mast is removable for storage and the boat can now do duty for a range of forces.

I have plans for a larger version more heavily armed and a more complex superstructure etc. Mmmwahaa

 Part 3 - Everyone loves a sailor ?

Having sorted out the first vessel , I of course also wanted to get the boys from the Black Sea fleet done. So here are the detachment from Odessa - I have a cool flag for them when their command set turns up.

This force is getting there now. It will be fighting on Friday,  the last of the latest tranche will be along next week. Hopefully the order for the final pieces turns up soon.

Points - all 28mm stuff
Bolo foot  x 16 full , 4 prone = 90
Guns x2  = 20

Boat crew x 2 full figure = 10
Very large 28mm vehicle/ship  = 40 pts

On the plus side this takes me over my target and means I can have a few days grace while watching the kick off matches of the 6 Nations and dreaming of that elusive Grand Slam.

Cheers

D

Dave, wow - what a great bunch of models this week. The Bolshies are great of course and more firepower is never a bad thing. "Whatever happens, we have got / The Maxim gun, and they have not." The flagmen are all great and I'm sure will come in handy on the tabletop. And that boat! I love the metal detail bits and it's genius to add the removable mast. Make up several with different flags and you've amortized this piece admirably. "Torpedo Odessa" indeed!

Correcting your math somewhat though... guns count for 10 points each (I know, you get twice the points for painting the machinegun as you do for painting one crewman) so that's 160 big points for you.
