KenR - 28mm Spanish Italian Wars Heavy Cavalry Tres (70 pts)

No alarms and no surprises with the 2nd entry this week, it's the ongoing saga of my Spanish Gent d'Armes for the Italian Wars and here is the third of six units I have planned.

As previously the figures are 28mm from The Assault Group and Flags from Petes Flags.

6 x 28mm Cavalry at 10 pts each and a couple of Flags for 2, gives me 62 pts.

So that's half of these done, and there's just time for a couple of group shots (cause I know you like them !) of the completed units to date (plus the two pre Challenge)

See you all next week with some Swiss.

Another fine set of Spanish HC Ken.  I've bumped up your points score for the overall impression of the work  you've done on these riders.  That groups shot at the bottom is marvellous.  Does the tabeltop shake when they gallop across the field of battle?  The flags really help make the scene for this period.  Well done, and I for one am looking forward to seeing more Swiss next week.

From AndrewG - More Fantasy/Sci-Fi Characters & Creatures (56 points)

This week I continued plugging away at my fantasy and sci-fi skirmish game requirements in between some historical figures (see other post) and was pleasantly surprised with the results.

First up, a rider to add to the Guards of Traitor’s Toll (GoTT) patrol detachment I showed last week. Interestingly, GoTT includes rules for mounted troops, wagons, animals, etc. but there are not many figure options readily available yet, so I made my own kit bashing some town guard bits with a Wargames Atlantic medieval mounted sergeant. The bed roll is from a 30+ year old Italeri 1/35 scale German soldier kit (never throw those extra bits away!). Overall, he turned out pretty good. Additionally, I finished one more townsfolk – a distracting puppeteer – who keeps the guard preoccupied while someone else fleeces his saddlebag of goodies.

Next up, a small addition to my monster library. These three Constructs are metal miniatures from Northstar’s Frostgrave line, and I have to say I really enjoyed painting them up. For ‘Barrel Man’ and ‘Pencil Head’ I followed the grain so to speak and kept my paint strokes all in one direction. For ‘Creepy Muppet’, I kept the colours drab as he would be put together from abandoned clothing items. By the way, I have no idea if that’s the actual names of these figures but that’s what I’m going with. The winter bases were made with Vallejo rough grey pumice (26.213) that dries lighter than the picture on the container, and little pieces of quartz, which pass for decent ice blocks.

Turning to Sci-Fi, I knocked out a big stompy mining robot and its handler for my Stargrave campaigns. Again, both are Northstar figures – the mining robot is multi-part metal, and the handler is a plastic figure kit bashed from the Crew and Mercenaries sets. Being a mining robot, I added some access panel decals, serial numbering, and gave it a couple of washes of nuln oil to dull down the brighter colours. Off he goes to drill holes!

Claiming the following points:

1x mounted figure = 10 pts

5 x 28mm figures = 25 pts

1x 28mm vehicle = 20 pts

1x Squirrel points – different genres – riders, monsters, robots

Total = 56 points

I am enjoying your GoTT pieces Andrew, nice guard and puppeteer.  If you're looking for mounted figures, you might want to check out the Perry WoR "Light Cavalry" kit.  Those creepy constructs as almost as unnerving as Byron's KD stuff.  But I have to say that you christened them with appropriate names.  Do the blue base rings have any significance in game play?  And I like the Rompy Stompy Robo-miner and handler.  I don't want to be on the receiving end of those.

I can give you 55 points for the figures, but the Squirrels are a separate tally. I've tagged this post to give the Squirrel Finder General (SFG) a heads up.

KenR - Count Lobau 28mm French Napoleonic - 40 points

In addition to the Command Bases I did last week I was also working on a Corp Commander base and came up with this for my French Vi Corps.

The base has been extended to 100mm and includes 5 figs in a bit of a diorama. The figures are all 28mm from the Perrys Napoleonic metal range and consists of Count Lobau himself, a General de Division and a Adjutant (all mounted). Added to that are a Hussar and a Guard Tirailleur who are parts of units in and around Plancenoit who are outside the immediate Corp.

Scoring is really easy, 3 mounted 28mm horse at 10 each and 2 foot at 5 each, giving this entry a total of 40 points. I should have some more Spanish Cavalry in today and in the background I'm working on the Glarus section of my Swiss Pike Block.

Having done the Command Bases at the top of the Order of Battle for VI Corps it will be some regular French Infantry next time I come back to these.

Obviously you are going for a top down approach to this project Ken, having completed the Commanders first.  Looking forward to seeing someone for these guys to boss around in the coming week.s. However, another stunning and very busy command base.  I do like the posing and he inclusion of the extra corps units.  I'll look out for your Spanish cavalry.

From MartinC Quite a lot of Saxons and some more Tripods (218pts)

12 months ago my brother in law, also name Martin, ruptured his achilles playing a full game of football. He is 58 and everyone took the piss out of him apart from my sister, who was less than impressed, to say the least.

Very quickly he got very bored and asked me to teach him to wargame. So I taught him how to play Kings of War Historical, the maddest set of rules and the most fun. We played Picts vs Saxons and he really enjoyed it. So I started to build him a Saxon army. This is the next part, and probably the last of the infantry. The figures are a box of Gripping Beast dark age warriors, and a simple paint

Regiment of warriors

Regiment of spearmen

Troop of singers, these are a simple conversion with a hand swap. The slings are in the box

My dalliance with tripods continues, and will probably end with these 3 small scout tripods from Pendraken

The are about tree height, and I bent some metal trees over to give a sense of movement, and to help support them

Scores on the doors

40 x 28mm infantry = 200pts

3 x10mm vehicles = 18pts

Total 218pts

Great that you able to get your BIL into ancients Martin, and those are very nice Saxons you've done for him.  The GB plastics are a cost effective way to get some armies together.  Have you looked at the Victoria saxons (or late Romans)?  The two makes go together well, even for kitbashing.  Not sure about using slings in close formation like that, looks like a good way to get brained by your neighbours.  Really like the tripod tree surgeons too.

From AndrewG - Wars of the Roses Artillery (50 points)

I got a bit distracted this week painting figures for other games, so my War of the Roses project took a bit of a hit. Nevertheless, I was able to put two artillery pieces together. These Culverins and crews are all metals from the Perry miniatures line. They arrived with quite a bit of flashing on them, and the elevation guides were pretty bent, so they required more cleaning up than I would have otherwise expected from Perry’s. Also, there's no clear up/down or left/right for any of the pieces so I made sure to refer to technical illustrations before cleaning and gluing - I saw a few of these miniatures online where the elevation guides were cut off and/or the barrels had been inverted.

Looking forward to firing ... if the rain would stop!

Let's hope it doesn't blow up this time...

Kept the crew liveries generic so I can use them in different forces

Crew sizes were varied to add some variety

I purposely left the mountings and barrels black, as most paintings and illustrations I could source for the period suggested they weren’t shiny gun metal (if anyone knows otherwise please let me know). I mounted them on 80x80x2mm bases and gave them the usual treatment of Vallejo muds, Noch grass, Tajima tufts, and driveway special gravel blend. Overall, I’m happy with how they turned out. Now to make about ten more…

Claiming the following points:

2x 28mm artillery & crews = 20 pts

6x28mm foot figures @ 5 points =30

2x28mm Weapon @10 points =20

Total = 20 50 points.

Great work on these Perry pieces Andrew.  I have these kits in my Italian Wars Army and they are very nice, but I agree that one needs to pay attention in assembly.  I really like the basing and posing of figures.  These were typically wrought iron weapons, basically made of staves and hoops like a barrel.  As far as I can tell black is the correct colour, think of an old timey fence.  You seriously undervalued yourself on the points as you get to claim the guns and the crews.  I've upped your scores accordingly.

From HarryV Libyan Skirmishers (180 Points)

 Hey everybody,

This week's submission is 36 28mm Libyan Skirmishers for my Carthaginian Project for a total of 180 points. These Libyans were recruited from the nomadic, tribal peoples of the vast region of Libya.

These guys are made from the Warriors of Carthage box from Victrix, along with fellows from the victrix peltast set and other random sets to make up the numbers. You only get 12 in the warriors of Carthage box, so numbers needed to be found elsewhere. Fortunately you get extra Libyan heads so conversions are easy.

Hannibal had around 2,000 of these warriors in his army from my research, so at a 1:50 scale that gives 40 models, so I am about 4 figures short, but oh well.

I couldn't find my stash of surplus round shields and did not have enough in the packs to give them all round shields. Therefore some of these fellows have picked up thureos shields from Carthage's substantial armories. Of course, after priming them I found my extra round shields.

Some of these Libyans also have acquired/looted helmets as well. This was mainly to make up for the lack of Libyan heads I had available.

Our limited sources of these gentlemen describe them wearing exclusively red tunics, along with wild and shaved hairstyles. I believe the hairstyles would have been unique to each tribe, however the victrix set only has one expression/face per hairstyle, so the different tribes are mixed together for modeling purposes.

The victrix warriors of Carthage box is a little frustrating as it combines three very distinct troop types in one box. I would really prefer separate kits for the different troop types, like a dedicated box just for Libyan skirmishers. now that I am out of Libyan heads I can't really make any more of this troop type. Also you only get one head per hairstyle, where you would think the skirmishers recruited from a tribe would be grouped together all with the same hairstyle.

These are all for the "To The Strongest" Ruleset.

Next up are many more infantry along with more heavy cavalry which will be ready towards the end of February. Following that I have some really cool stuff (I think) for the Carthage project which will remain a secret for now.

Every time I see HarryV in the title I expect to see HYW English, but I am more than satisfied with these Libyans!  Excellent work on kit bashing, painting and basing these skirmishers.  As Phil Barker would say, do not discount the humble light infantry skirmisher with javelins.  These troops are. both cheap and effective.  In one of our TtS games, Irish beardless youth managed to get round the flank of the Roman legions and win the day.  I got a chuckle out of your shield drama (been there) and the issues with the heads.  FYI, I know some gamers have used Perry Mahdist plastics as greek javelin men, so maybe's there's another source for you.  I am hoping that the promised "really cool stuff" includes Heffalumps.

From SylvainR: 28mm Goblins and 6mm tanks (183 points)

This week, instead of creating a post for my WW2-6mm project and a separate one for my D&D project, I decided to combined them both. I hope this will please my Tuesday minion :-).

Let's start with a bunch of goblins. If you look closely at the group picture, you will notice that there are two styles of models, some "old school" and some "dynamic" models, both designated as "goblins" on the Reaper web site. Because they look so different, I decided to make them into two "tribes": a gray tribe and the blue tribe.

There are only three different poses of "old school" goblins with four models each for a total of twelve. The "dynamic" goblins come in 10 different poses and it includes a female goblin. They are definitely my favorite and I love their mischievous look. Some are armed with lit torches... What could they possibly do with those...

The last three goblins are the female, the shaman and the leader.

In the 6mm department, I completed twenty Light Tank Mk. VI for the British Expeditionary Force. I ordered these models on Black Friday (November 28, 2025) and they just got home two weeks ago, after waiting for over 7 weeks. I've seen worse. Finally, my BEF cruiser tanks squadrons will be complete.

I also finished fourteen Tiger I tanks. I opted for a two tone pattern. This monster of a model (for 6mm) barely fits on the base. For larger vehicles, like the Tiger II, Jagdpanther and Jagdtiger, I had to use bases twice bigger. I put on them decals indicating their  company, their platoon and their position in the platoon. These are the last tanks I had to paint for my late war German army.

I just wanted to show in the picture above the difference in size between the two tanks in this week's tray. Note that I try to differentiate the armies by varying the colors on the bases. For Axis armies I use darker flock. It does help distinguish enemy units on the table.

Above, a scenario I played lately: the Dunkirk Evacuation. The British commander has to designate part of his force to be evacuated, so tanks and truck lined up on the beach are actually "representing" their crew. The rest of the forces are then used to delay the German advance as long as possible. Spitfires are trying to fend off the Stukas dive bombing the ships.

Points claimed:

23x 28mm infantry at 5 points each = 115 points

34x 6mm vehicles at 2 points each = 68 points

Total = 183 points

Thanks for reading!

Well I guess I can let you get away with one post this week....I really like those Goblins, but the more dynamic ones are my favourites.  Are you sure that those aren't WizKids, I am pretty sure that I've painted some WK goblins that had the same look.

You've really gone the full gamut of Mark VI tanks, from tiny Vickers to huge Tigers.  Great basing as always and I got a chuckle out of the side by side size comparison.  the Dunkirk game looks aces, but obviously you need some dismounted AFV and truck crews added to your collection.
