1/72 Scale Roman Gladiators (36 Points)

The boy said he wanted to play gladiator combat games, so I thought what better way to start this years challenge.

These are a mix of Orion, Italeri and Pegasus 1/72 plastic figures. The Orion in particular were very hard to clean up and have a sort of fringe effect where I tried to clean up flash and mold lines.

In addition to my regular Tanned skin triad from Reaper, I used the Drak and Golden skin triads that I purchased just before the challenge.

I probably went overboard with color choice, I can't seem to not use multiple metallics. The leather cuirass on the third figure from the left bothers me a little. I am worried it is too similar to the Dark skin tone.

I've set myself some daily goals, and is my want, failed to reach them. But on the bright side I'm doing well towards my weekly goal to hit 1000 points. So I can't be too sad.

Macte virtute sic itur ad astra.

Great job Sean! I had no idea that these companies did gladiators in this scale - very cool. This is a colourful lot and that backdrop is just ace. What rules are you going to use for these? Once the boy gets old enough I strongly suggest 'Spartacus' - it's VERY adult in theme but gives a great game.
These nine gladiators will give you 36 points.

Splendid work, Sean! I know what it's like to try and rescue a dodgy casting, so I am all the more impressed when I see the bang-up job you've done here.

    1. Thanks Evan. As long as we don't get too macro in the photography they look ok.

  2. Very nice! The urge to start a new scale and period hit me hard last night so I've been comparison shopping different brands of 1/72 scale ancients. These are a definite inspiration!

    1. Thanks Bill. The three sets together give you a good mix. I think I like the Pegasus set the best. The Italeri is good but the poses are limited. The Orion has a lot of good stuff but the poses are a little awkward and the flash is something of a problem. Good luck with your gladiators.

    1. Thanks Millsy. A lot less area to work with on those 20mm figures. I like the triads quite a bit. I also like it that there is some diversity in my figures now.

  5. Thanks Curt, I was going to use Two Hour Wargames title "Red Sand, Blue Sky". I had a copy of the Avalon Hill Gladiator game, but I'll be damned if I can find the thing. That was a fun game. I'm hoping to get a game in while we're out here on vacation. Painting schedule permitting of course.

    1. Hi Steve, thanks. 1/72 plastics are certainly affordable. If you already collect a certain scale you may want to stick with that.

    1. Thanks Jonathan. I'm hoping we'll get a game in. Sometimes the idea of playing a game is more fun for him than actually playing.

  11. Morituri te salutant. (no not Hebrew this time, but Latin). Also the Gladiator rules I use. Excellent to see some glads on the Challenge so early. I may even do a few as well.

    1. I'll have to give those rules a gander, though I probably shouldn't. I look forward to seeing your gladiators. I have a few more in the wings.

  13. I used to have a collection of 28mm gladiators, but I never used them for anything and sold them off. Methinks I need to take a look at 1/72 plastics and figure out a good set of rules to go with them. Thanks for the inspiration!
