From Curt: 'Chaff' Light Infantry for Turnip28 (40 Points)

Hellooo,

I have to say, I'm having a bit of fun reading the bewildered responses from some participants to all this Turnip silliness. Remember, be inclusive people, root vegetable-based wargames need love too.  :)

So, another small post from me for my T28 project. Moving on from the rank-and-file of the 'Fodder', we now consider the much-abused 'Chaff'.

As you can imagine from their name, Chaff are the light infantry of Turnip28. They're typically tasked to screen other units, nip around the battlefield to seize objectives, and generally be an annoyance. Similar to skirmishers from other systems, Chaff benefit from being able to deploy in a loose formation, making them harder to hit, and, as they sometimes clean their begrimed, rusted muskets, they are marginally less horrible shots than their comrades.

Here are two units of Chaff for my forces. One for the 'Rutabaga Brigade'

...and the other serving 'The Fighting Fennel Fusiliers'.

I wanted them to have a slightly different look than the Fodder, so, pulling from the artwork in the rules, I gave them each a pavise to lug around the battlefied (makes perfect sense, right?).  I had a bit of fun freehanding some unit heraldry on the shields. Granted, its pretty rustic, but I figure it fits with the overall setting of weirdness, decay and dissolution of Turnip28.

These eight Chaff will give me 40 points on the long path towards my 1300 point goal.

Next up for T28 will be the 'Brutes', or maybe the cavalry... or perhaps the artillery. No clue really. It'll sort itself out.

Thanks for popping in for a look!

- Curt

  1. I'm in the bemused camp, but if it gives you enjoyment then who am I to gainsay you. Nice painting as always, Curt! :)

    1. Thank you, Tamsin. Your forbearance is appreciated. Gosh, its not like I'm doing something silly like a 1/56 scale spaceship from Traveler. ;)

    2. Yeah, who'd be ridiculous enough to do something bizarre like that? ;)

    3. I know! Totally bonkers, right?! It would make painting turnip soldiers seem sort of, um, normal. ;P

    4. Vegetables in space is surely where this heading!

    5. Hmmmm - now there's a silly idea forming in my mind. Given the shape of the spaceship I could paint it orange and then do the engine cones green so it looks a bit like a giant carrot...OMG! I've been infected by this root-vegetable madness! ;)

    6. I love it, Tamsin. You need to run with that. :P

  2. I'm in the want to try it out, but already got too many shinies going on ( SW:Legions ). But I did back his last KS, and once they get to MMF I am likely to try printing and painting a few perhaps.. maybe a character or two...

Great work as always chief! Going to look amazing when all lined up together!

    1. Thanks Kyle. I'd like to see your take on this stuff. I'm keen to try the 'official models' as well (I helped with the Kickstarter). The T28 rules are actually quite good, and I understand they've been designed by the folks over at One Page Rules. Byron and I had great fun testing them out this autumn when my stuff was just a mob of primed models (I know, playing with unpainted models? The horror!! *clutches pearls*)

    3. I do need to have a peak at the rules there and see whats what in them.. I guess they are around somewhere? Might help me some with regards to what to print out first outside of just trying to make some sort of hero character..

  3. This definitely counts as a little too quirky for me (and I have been known to have embraced some pretty quirky stuff), but the painting, plus the detritus, looks fab. I am in Tamsin's 'Camp of the Bemused'.

    1. Oh man, if your bemused now, it's going to get a LOT quirkier yet. Hold my beer. :)

  4. Great work Curt, love the pavises. However, however speaking of “perfect sense” in the context of a vegetable army might be a stretch…

    1. I'm just thinking that if I was a sentient vegetable soldier in a quasi blackpowder age, then a pavise might be a nice thing to have kicking around. You know, just sayin'.

I think I need to develop some Cannabis Commandoes for this project...

  6. Wonderful chaff. The rutabaga thing still has me baffled, but they are well painted and lovely miniatures. Well done.

  12. These look great, it really looks like they've ripped up some floorboards to make those shields.

  13. Fine brushwork as ever dude. I have to say, the funniest/coolest parts for me are the pavises (as others have noted), and I just love the heraldry on it - aligns so nicely with the setting. Great work.

    1. Thanks dude! Delighted you like them. The pavises were great fun to work on (though I hadn't a clue what I was going to do with them when I started).

  14. Well call me bewildered, that said the miniatures look very well and, as far as I can judge, capture the turnip atmosphere very well.
