Hello fellow challengers and tree-dwelling rodent aficionados,
When I asked our most benevolent Snowlord about the status of the annual side duels, I was informed that nothing official was happening this year, but that if I wanted to run a Squirrel Duel, I could.
So, it falls to me, to once again put on the hat and bushy-tailed uniform of the Squirrelfinder General and invite you all to partake in the Squirrel Duel.
What is the Squirrel Duel? What are you blathering about?
For any newcomers, or amnesiacs joining us, the Squirrel Duel is a side challenge to the main AHPC event. During the course of the AHPC, challengers are encouraged to paint models from as many different scales, genres and periods as possible. It is a celebration of diversity and disorganisation over focus and discipline, an opportunity to get those odd models out of the to-do pile, and a way to have fun between batch painting your 1000s of identical figures.
So, if you have a hard time focusing on something for more than 30 seconds, have a pile of shame a mile high, and are just generally a little nuts, feel free to join. Entry is free, there are no minimum targets, but there are also no prizes beyond the envy of your peers and the adoration of the masses.
What do I need to do?
The Squirrel Duel is simple. All you need to do is paint 25 unique points of models (See the Snowlord's post on points scoring), to score 1 Squirrel Point, and make sure you tag your post with 'Squirrel' in addition to any other tags you add. Now, having done this before, I worry that I may not have been clear enough. When I say, tag your post with 'Squirrel', I mean you absolutely must tag your post with 'Squirrel'. If you do not do so, I cannot find your post and you will not accrue points for the duel. Is that clear? Good. (Narrator's voice "But, it was in fact, not clear and many challengers failed to tag their post with 'Squirrel').
At the end of the challenge, the challenger with the most Squirrel Points wins.
What do you mean 'unique'?
The Squirrel Duel isn't just about painting as many models as possible, it is also about painting different models. So, each Squirrel Point requires you to paint something different.
The guidelines are as follows.
Painting models in different scales. (E.g. 28mm Romans and 6mm Romans) - That's a Squirrel Point.
Painting models in different genres. (E.g. Vikings and Elves) - That's a Squirrel Point.
Painting models in different periods. (E.g. Victorian British and WW2 British) - That's a Squirrel Point.
If two units would normally be considered part of the same army, then they do NOT count as a Squirrel Point, even if they are wearing different uniforms. If you would expect to see them on the same side of the table during a game, they are NOT a Squirrel Point. If you need to be an expert in uniforms from a particular date to understand the difference in the lace on the cuffs marks the unit as being part of a different army, they are NOT a Squirrel Point.
Terrain will not be counted towards Squirrel Points.
Finally, some models can be difficult to clearly differentiate. You may paint two Pirate crews, one in red and one in yellow, for your own games and hobby, but both would be counted as 'pirates' and therefore are NOT a Squirrel Point.
Sorry for being so strict, but every year there is some confusion as to what is or isn't counted.
Additionally, bonus points awarded by minions are not counted towards the 25 point threshold.
If you split a Squirrel entry over several posts, make sure to include a group shot in the post claiming the point.
So, what do I need to do to enter?
Simply respond to this post below. Let me know your blogger handle (and your posting name if they are different). Then, simply tag any posts you think are applicable for entry with the tag 'Squirrel' and I will have a look at them during the course of the challenge. Anyone can enter at any point in the challenge, and I will be posting periodic updates to keep everyone informed.
It isn't required, but it is helpful if you include a list of your Squirrels at the bottom of each post, so I can see what you think you have scored and can hunt down any rogue rodents that I may have missed.
Anything else I should know?
Sandbagging (Holding back the majority of your work until the very last post) is heavily frowned upon. While a surge at the end is expected, I'd like to see a steady pace of Squirrels from all entrants please.
I will be joining the duel myself so any claims of cheating or underhanded tactics are probably merited. :)
And don't forget to tag your post with 'Squirrel'.
(Narrator's voice "But in the end, half of the posts were not tagged with 'Squirrel' and the Squirrelfinder General had to spend hours of his free time reading through page after page looking for the missing entries.")

Think I will give this a go this year as I have 10mm, 15mm and 28mm figs to paint from 6 or 7 different periods. Good luck with squirrel herding (collective noun for squirrels is a scurry so maybe it should be scurrying not herding)
ReplyDeleteA scurry of squirrels? It has a nice ring to it. Welcome aboard.
DeleteI'm in after couple of off-seasons. Without map it is nice to have some distractions.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts exactly. More distractions, more fun!
DeleteIans I am in. Please can my squirrels be red.
ReplyDeleteYour squirrels can be any colour you please, you just have to paint them.
DeleteI'm gonna join this year, for the first time. Got lots of bits n bobs this time round.
ReplyDeleteGlad to have you join us, Ray.
DeleteHey, squirrel is my middle name, of course I am in! I have a plan for this year, but experience has taught me it wil be out of the window in the first week of the Challenge anyway. I will try to remember tagging my posts. And where I left my stash of nuts…
ReplyDeletePlans never survive contact with the AHPC. Good to have you among the Squirrellers.
DeleteGood luck with the squirrel hunt. They only get points for squirrels that they tag! Make them do the work.
ReplyDeleteWhile I probably will show a bit of leniency, that is the plan. If people post without the proper labels, it will be up to them to chase down their old posts and show me what they should be scoring.
DeleteCount me in also, this AHPC is likely to be project chaotic - BartekR
ReplyDeleteChaotic is just another word for Squirrels, good to have you with us.
DeleteI’ll get my backside handed to me on a platter, but sign me up for squirrel wrangling. I negotiated a new guitar this fall, so am working mostly from left overs from past projects in lieu of new figures.
ReplyDeleteIt's not about whether you win or lose the duel, it's the Squirrels you paint along the way that matter.
DeleteFirst, thanks for taking on the Squirelfinder General's mantle, Stuart. I will take up the challenge and wade into the bushy-tailed fray. Thank you for the reminder on tagging (which I'll assuredly forget). See you all in the Squirrel Tally!
ReplyDeleteI'll try not to be too draconian on the labels, but it is the role of the Squirrelfinder General to be uncompromising at times.
DeleteSquirrel!
ReplyDeleteI'd like to try for this sub-challenge please.
That's the spirit, welcome to the party.
DeleteThanks for looking after this Stuart. I've entered every time I've taken part in the challenge though I tend to paint units in numbers bigger than 5. I'll throw my name into the hat again this year as it would be rude not to but I intend to focus on larger units again
ReplyDelete25 points is the minimum, a Squirrel can be of any size. Thanks for joining.
DeleteI think I shall take up the squirrel challenge also, as I need a new grey squirrel fur coat I think!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure you will look suitably dashing in your new attire. Glad you could join us.
DeleteCount me in for the squirrels too, Stuart! less than a day in and i already have a mix of butterfly....er squirrels squirreled away on my desk!
ReplyDeleteButterflies, Squirrels, all random animals are welcome.
DeleteI’m up for Squirrel!
ReplyDeleteGreat, the more the merrier.
DeleteBeing extremely unfocused (wait what's that?) I cannot but enter this side duel. My painting table already has a plethora of different figures on it!
ReplyDeleteA plethora of Squirrels is a great starting point, welcome!
ReplyDeleteHi Stuart, I might have ago although I am still confused by the rules, what if my squirrel is grey - are they allowed and can they be at the back of the base? Norber aka JohnB
ReplyDeleteSo long as it is painted grey and not 'unpainted plastic' grey, that is fine.
DeleteI will join this squirrel duel. I have a few different scales and genres to add. Let's see what I can find. I have yet to upload my first entry for this challenge. I hope it's ok to enter. Take Care. Handle is BrianC
ReplyDeleteNo problem at all, welcome to the madness.
DeleteHi Stuart I read the instructions and then didn’t understand them! I assumed the first submission would have no squirrel because it’s the reference one! Yes I know you said someone would not get this simple side challenge right or follow the simple instructions correctly. Anyway I noticed people were putting squirrel in their first submission. I hope this has entertained you - I have now put a squirrel in my first submission labels.
ReplyDeleteEvery entry of 25 points or more is eligible to score a Squirrel point, so long as you haven't posted the same army/force/gang before, so the first entry is always going to be okay.
DeleteLate to the partry (as usual) but I'd like to be included (TimP).
ReplyDeleteI have a few oddments I need to get sorted. First post is already in, but under 25 so not eligible.
And thanks for managing the side duel again this year.
Hope this is okay,
Sure, I'll add you to the list.
