FROM: Jez Todd Week Three Macedonians Part 2 - 70 points

 Dear All

End of Week Three already - trying to make sure I post something every week and managed to continue momentum with my Basic Impetus Alexandrian Macedonian army. A mixture of the Companians and skirmishers this week and all based for Impetus use.

First up my Companion battle winners - I have a separate commander base to follow for Alexander himself.

Followed by three bases of skirmishers- these are all Wargames Foundry but converted from the pack of 8 slingers. It was quite easy to switch and add in some javelins and a couple of figures seemed OK to convert and use for archers - saves a bit of cash anyway!

For the first base I kept one figure throwing a rock as liked the look - he has a javelin as a back up. Personally think I would opt for a bit more attire than just a cloak ......

Should be able to finish off this army in part three! Points wise this week an extra 70.

All the best Jez

From NoelW: The Chamber of Darkness: 20 Shades of Grey (121 points)

And a voice comes out of the Darkness, saying: “About ruddy time, too! Could Grimvizaj have cut things any finer? Go on, they’re over there somewhere. Get to it!”

Titchy perceives dimly (I think I mention that’s how he usually perceives things, but, fair play, he is in almost total darkness) a tall, spiky, shadowy horseman, barking commands.

From across the room there’s a flash of fire and something like a wasp with its tail on fire comes flying past him.

“Get to it, I say!” insists the horseman. “What are you waiting for?”

“If you were to get off your high horse for a moment and explain…”

Dimly (got it?) Titchy perceives the horseman dismount and advance towards him menacingly.

“I’m sorry if the situation is over your head,” snarls the spiky shadow, “But we’re under attack here!”

Bang! Another inflammable wasp whizzes past.

“And,” he continues, “as you’re the ruddy reinforcements – Top Secret, hush hush, but definitely not illegal in any sense, state of the art constructs Grimvizaj has just sold me – at the cost of an arm and a leg, may I say (but, fortunately, not mine) – is it unreasonable of me at all to ruddy well expect you to do your ruddy job – “ Bang! “and ruddy well do some reinforcing!”

“There’s no need to talk down to me – “ Titchy begins…

Woof! (Can dogs laugh?)

“We’re not reinforcements, we’re just passing through on our way to the Larder.”

“Well, good luck with that. The Larder is currently a no-go area. It’s been barricaded by dozens of these ruddy men with their ruddy firesticks. It’s all we can do to stop the rest coming up from The Aquifer to join them.”

“Ah - " suggests Elfbow, “we've made a wrong turning, no doubt."

“We should go back to Grimvizaj,” says Merlissa, edging back to the door they’ve just ocme through.

“Oh, come on,” snarls Getrude. “Where’s your fighting spirit? We’ve come this far. Keep Questing and Carry On. What’s a few fireworks? Look at Gerald. Does he look scared?”

Staring at Getrude’s staff, they have to admit, he hasn’t a splinter out of place.

“Mmm, fireworks,” mumbled Gnawbone.

“Look – even Gnawbone is ready to rumble.”

“Er – “ the shadowy figure held his spiky arm before them. “As you do - er -rumble, please watch out for our lads, won’t you?”

“Our lads?”

“Your reinforcees. Nice chaps. Grey, faceless, no mouths. They don’t say a lot.”

“Clerihew will have some company at last.”

“If they look grey, odd and slightly mis-shapen, they’re the good guys. One of Grimwaj’s bargain experiments. All I could afford. Our last line of defence…”

“And the bad guys?"

"Anything in a uniform. Anything with a wand of fire. There’s a fleet of them off the coast somewhere – been sailing for nearly a year, it seems. Come from a ruddy place some call Challenge Island. Others call it the Refuge of the Damned…”

“They’re after the Greatest Treasure the World has Never Seen!”

“Quite possibly. Apparently their Island was invaded just over a year ago by a plague of mad warlords, who all left random troops in weird uniforms all over the place. Once they’d finished fighting amongst themselves, they realised it was their manifest destiny to do similar things to any other indigent people they could ruddy well find.”

“You don’t get more indigent than us!”

“Precisely. Anyway, Grimvizaj was at that time running a very lucrative sideline in sorceress enhancements. He had apparently inflated balloons for the witches on Challenge Island more than once. And he may have become a little overfriendly with one of those dear ladies…”

“Nonsense!” cried Merlissa. “He wouldn’t dare!”

“… and somehow let it slip that hidden in the Chambers of Challenge is the Greatest Treasure etc etc. In a matter of months, we were beset with these rapscallions with their firesticks and their painfully natty uniforms. More of them every day. Grimvizaj, has been desperately making new monsters as fast as he can, charging me through the nose - or, in one case, for the nose…”

“Bless his little cotton socks,” murmurs Merlissa.

“But virtually every monster has been slain or has fled to the darkest deep depths of the dungeon. Er, Chambers. But now the invaders have broken through to the Larder they can simply take one Chamber at a time till they come across the ruddy treasure. Our only hope is that some brave adventurers can make it to the Altar of the Snowlord, raise him from his long slumber, so he may ruddy well deploy the might of his dormant Power.”

"Well, good luck with that," says Elfbow. "If we come across any, we'll let you know."

“It's a disaster!” cries Titchy. “They’ve sealed the Larder. It’s the end of the world! What will we do without snacks?”

“Then,” cries Getrude, “we must imitate the action of a tiger, gird our lions, make ourselves unbearable and follow Gerald into the fray!”

Gerald wags at the darkness like an angry umbrella.

At once a rapid rattle of ricochets broke out, leaden wasps zooming around the chamber as if their nest had been smashed with a hammer, and five grey figures flee towards them.

“Get back, you ruddy cowards!”

The spiky creature clambers onto his spiky horse and rides into the fleeing figures.

“How about we imitate the action of a very sneaky tiger, and sidle round the wall to that glow of daylight over there?” suggests Elfbow.

“Two words? First word rhymes with ‘spud’? 'Good'? Second word? A short aircraft?

“'Plan'? 'Good plan!'”

“Woof!” says Scruff.

“Fire?? Works???”

The latest Frostgrave expansion, The Red King, introduces nullmen, who are “nearly featureless humanoids who shine with an unearthly grey light”, never communicate and appear to move without clear purpose. These seemed ideal for greyscale (which I’ve never before attempted) but I had no models. So I downgraded some plastic Zulus (one Warlord and 4 Perrys) by shaving, filing and liberally spilling polystyrene cement. I figured that these strange creatures would nevertheless communicate with each other and, if their movements seemed odd to ordinary people, then maybe they were indulging in some form of elaborate communicative dance – so I positioned the limbs of the models as oddly and dynamically as I could.

I tried several approaches to greyscaling – zenithal priming, a series of washes and, finally, black undercoat followed by lighter and lighter drybrushing. To be honest, I’m still not happy with the results, but they’ll do.

The Lord of Ruddigore is GW’s old Voice of Sauron model, on foot and horseback.

The “invaders” are 12 Perry Napoleonic Spanish, painted as the Volunteers of the Isle of Leon. I mentioned last year that I’m slowly building a Spanish Naps army, but my guiding principle is to get as many pretty uniforms on the table as I can. I do love a man in uniform. I won’t mind seeing their backs frequently in games, if they’re prettily arrayed, and these black uniforms with sky-blue facings will be a nice contrast with the white and yellow of other Spanish units.

The black figures, of course, are highlighted with grey, so I think I can count all 20 of these figures as Shades of Grey.

18 x 28mm foot figures: 90 points

1 mounted figure: 10 points

I think we generally give additional points for flags (saving your reverence, y’r Minionship): 1 point

Chamber: 20 points

TOTAL: 121 points

Plus 2 Squirrel points and 61 points in the Napoleonic side challenge.

from RayR - The Chamber of Challenge - The Pit of the Pendulum 25 points?

Another downward step towards The Alter of the SnowLord.
This is my second entry in the Bonus Round of The Chamber of the Challenge.
The Pit of the Pendulum:
"Paint something torturous, terrifying - or just something with a slowly descending pendulum-blade… swoosh… swoooooshhhh….. arrrghhhh!!"

I've had this Gibbet & Gallows made by Black Tree Designs for some time now, waiting
for the opportunity to paint it up for the Challenge and this year is it!

Its a fairly easy paintjob to be honest and I've added a figure for scale only.

(Who will be seen in a later entry)

So my Gibbet will get 20 bonus points plus I guess 5 points for a 25mm figure?

Over to you Mr Minion....

BruceR "The Men Who Would be Kings" 15mm married Zulus 20 x 2 = 40 pts

A friend and I played a Zulu game in 15mm at GenCon over 20 years ago.  We both enjoyed it and as we do he purchased a load of figures to do a game.  Problem is we only played when we met at GenCon each year as we lived over 800 miles apart.  He recently retired and moved back to my area and we now game regularly together.  He brought up his desire to still play the Zulu theme and I of course now dipped a toe in the water.  It may grow, but we (at least me)  are going to start with a skirmish style game such as The Man Who Would Be King (one of my favorite movies).  "Peachy"!  I might have gone 6mm, but as my friend already had the 15mm I went down this alley.

Back at work, but pandemic careful when not at work so painting time is up.  The AHPC has really got me clearing some piles.  Not that I don't have more coming in as that is truly the curse or benefit of this hobby.

The figures are 15mm Blue Moon Manufacturing distributed by Old Glory Corp.  The figures are great and one thing I had not noticed until putting them together was the shields have a spur to put into a hole in the figures arm to hold the shield.  Works great.  They are 15mm so I have given them the 3' rule paint job.  I did paint 12 British earlier in 2020 as a start.  Theses are my first Zulus.

Married group of warriors.

The empire builders painted early last year.  Probably need another 2 units of Zulus for balance.

Well at 20 x 2 = 40 pts

Enjoy

From PaulSS: [The Hatchery] Here Chicky Chicky (30pts)

Back to work this week so progress on painting has slackened somewhat. I'm still working on some more units to post, but the only thing completed and ready this past week is my entry for "The Hatchery" in the Chambers of Challenge.

The Hatchery: In this chamber, your model or terrain will need an avian theme, or could depict anything hatching - ideally, out of an egg.

I think that these models from Eureka Miniatures certainly fulfils these criteria.

As well as the chickens there is also a rather nice model of a dog carrying a pail of eggs. The other figure and dog in the set will feature in a future Chambers of Challenge entry.

Although it is part of the French Revolution range, I think this figure set would be suitable over a much broader period of history.

There is a single 28mm figure and I think that an additional 5 points for the additional hound and poultry is probably fair, with the location bonus for a total of 30 points.

28mm Napoleonics Duel Totalizer: 14 mounted, 32 foot

From SimonG: An Oni for the "Pit of the Pendulum" (27 points)

Carrying on my exploration of Yokai I offer up an Oni or traditional Japanese demon. Once again this is a Ludus Magnus Studios offering from their Black Rose Wars game set (this is one of the expansion figures offered to the original Kickstarter backers in the Stator set).

Again this is a 38mm scale PVC casting and overall a very clean sculpt with all sorts of interesting details. I deliberately opted against being at all bloodthirsty -- frankly every time I try this it ends up looking a bit silly 😀

I also experimented a bit with different varnishes -- using a select amount of gloss to bring out a few bits of the model.

Anyway good to play around with different skin tones and mixes of colours -- the palette is pretty traditional (red skin, green hair) with the hakama coloured to look like my old Kendo kit! Hardest to know what to do with were the various heads around this fellows belt 😕

So that just about wraps up Level 1 -- I'll be looking for some assistance to get me into where I want to be on level 2 so look forward to a Western European mythical lady next. By my reckoning another 27 points (7 for a 40mm figure and 20 for the chamber)

BenF: John Morgan (Hall of Traps) (25 points)

Well, its been a very slow start for me, but lots of rain has meant that I have a bit of a varnish backlog.

For my first entry I ventured into the depths of the chambers of challenge, specifically the terrifying hall of traps. This figure is John Morgan, paranormal investigator from the Cthulhu: Death May Die game. The premise of the game is that investigators are surrounded by various Eldritch horrors, and they must fight their way out by disrupting a ritual summoning Cthulhu or another great old one and leading to the end of the world. In his unpainted form, he has battled alongside Rasputin, Hemingway, and Lizzy Borden to vanquish the Elder God Hastur, the horrifying king in yellow.

Morgan is clearly inspired by another pulp hero famous for raiding and crusading for lost arks and doomed temples. DMD is a really fun, immersive cooperative game, and the lovely sculpts are crying out to be painted up. I've got a few great old ones, horrors, and other investigators coming up, and they should help me make my way through the unspeakable depths of the Chambers of Challenge.

I've also got lots of other odds and sods, 6mm Napoleonic Russians, 1/300 eastern front aircraft, 20mm WW2 Soviets and some Star Wars Legion figures, including a Vader and Luke which I plan to pimp out by adding LED lightsabers.

So, by my reckoning Morgan should bank me 25 points, 5 for the 28mm(ish) figure and 20 for the hall of traps.

From LeeH - The Armoury - Frostgrave Knight

Few Wizards will feel bold enough to enter Felstead without the support of their apprentice and a select band of fighters to protect them. Most of the mercenaries, adventurers and trained soldiers they hire will be kitted out with a rough assortment of weapons and often leather or at best chain armour. However, sometimes a little more is needed and if the wizard's pockets are deep enough, and the rewards high enough, they may hire a knight to accompany them. These steel-clad warriors would be the elite leaders in another less magical world, but they remain powerful and impressive figures non-the-less. Rarely are they subtle, and their armour and heraldry often proudly and visibly mark them out to be the toughest fighters.

This model is a 1991 Grenadier Knight that I bought years ago, long before Frostgrave was a twinkle in Joseph McCullough's eye. I'm building up quite a collection of figures for use with Frostgrave, sometimes painting whole warbands and sometimes individual figures like this one. I deliberately wanted to keep the paint job simple on this, because I think it makes the maximum impact with that plate armour. The coloured heraldry is also simple, but very striking...this guy is no shrinking violet!

I had hoped to have my first historical figures submitted by now but my first week back to work after the holidays has been... "challenging" shall we say! I have made progress with my 15mm WWII stuff, but they won't now be finished until next week. I'm still on track with my target so it's not the end of the world, and hopefully, things will settle down at work in a couple of weeks.

(Scroring: 1x28mm + CoC Bonus = 25points)

AdamC: The Shrine Dark Age Nun

This figure is from the Gripping Beast women pack.

He hood and shawl suggested a nun's habit to me.
Her clothes are simple natural linen and wool in hues of gray. The shawl and hood are "German Grey" just a bit lighter than black.
There is a broach holding her shawl closed its triangler possibly an emblem of the Trinity.  Points wise she's a 25mm figure worth 5 points and her religious vocation should get me another 20 points for the room.

AngusW - Wrecked 8th Army Trucks (40pts)

Whilst casting round for ideas for interesting scenery pieces for a desert table, I stumbled across these wrecked trucks from AnyScale Miniatures.

I don't like painting vehicles. I tend to get despondent half way though, but I'm fairly happy how these turned out.

Wrecked CMP F60L

Abandoned Bedford OYD

That should be another 40 points... Next up some Saxons I picked up at Battleground a couple of years ago.
