From AaronH - Twelve 28mm ECW cavalry from Warlord Games (120 points)

This entry is twelve 28mm ECW Cavarly from Warlord Games (despite the misleading title to draw you in).

Twelve horse.
These are a plastic set from Warlord. I am a fan of their ECW line. The faces have a lot of character. The plastics are very nicely modeled. These don't disappoint. They've done some clever things with the headgear to give you some nice variety. The horses are fairly splendid for plastic.

The models are easy to assemble and paint. Truth be told these are easier than their infantry.

The trumpeter looks like he may have landed wrong.
There's lots of variety on the sprues. Pistols, swords, a mixture? Done. The horn is nice. I'm not so sure what to do with the lance though.

A handsome mount.
I really like the horses that come with this set. Good conformation and lots of spirit. They also come with plenty of holsters, in different styles.

If you choose carefully you can really give them an active, mid charge, sort of look. I did not choose carefully.

I am still not a fan of painting horses but these were almost fun. They are especially remarkable when compared to the Wargames Factory Celtic nags I painted for last year's challenge. Night and day.

All in all I highly recommend this set as a cheap and quick way to bulk up your ECW horse. I have another regiment of twelve of these and I'm actually looking forward to painting them.

The Wednesday crew continue to up the ante, with more lovely cavalry. These could even tempt me into a new period. The unit works really well together , lots of movment - the thing i always want from mounted troops - grand job!

  2. Great work Aaron. I'm with you re: painting horses - it sucks, but it really turns out well once you have a fine unit of cavalry like this. Great job.

    1. Thanks Greg. One of my goals for this year is to paint enough of the blighters that it's just routine.

  5. Ooh, lovely cavalry Aaron - well done! I've been curious about the Warlord ECW plastics and it's heartening to hear some good words about them. As Dave says, I like how dynamic these guys are.

    1. Thank you Curt. I really am pleased with the Warlord ECW plastics. So far there are no stinkers in the bunch. I have some Foundry pikemen coming up to fill out the infantry regiments and the Warlord plastics stand up to them just fine.

  6. You really humbugged us with that post title Aaron! There I was expecting to see twelve 28mm ECW cavalry from Warlord Games and was utterly disappointed to be shown twelve 28mm ECW cavalry from Warlord Games!

Very nice work on these boys and their steeds :)

  7. That kit does seem to be a nice treat! Looks like it could easily lend to other armies like the Ill-fated King Gustave and his Swiss Cav..nice brushwork on em! ;)

    1. Thanks Dave. I'm not an expert on the 30YW but I don't see any reason they couldn't.

  8. Wonderful work Aaron! You neglected to tell us if they are staunch servants of his Majesty Charles, King by Grace of God, or evil, traitorous scum bags... :-)

If I might make one suggestion as someone who has loads of 28mm ECW cavalry... try using 2-3 different colours for your buff coats. It doesn't add much time at all and really makes a unit pop. By the time you've mixed and matched with horse colours pretty much every one is a different combo.

    1. Thanks Millsy. Being an American they are, of course, not royalists. Though I should probably admit that a fair bit of my family is from Canada because they fought on the losing side of our Revolution. I hadn't thought of mixing up the buff coats, but as I have another regiment to do I'll give it a go. Thanks for the tip.

    2. Oh, you must mean they fought on the RIGHT side of your Revolution. ;)

  9. Great looking cavalry. I'll second Millsy recommendation on varying buff colours. It adds little time but a lot of subtle variety to the end product.
