Keeping to last weeks plan, I've painted up more 15mm figures. This time I've moved over the other side of the Relief of Vienna to the Poles.
These handsome chaps are infact 2 units of Lipka Tartars.
The Muslim Tatars who settled in Lithuania in 1397 originated from the White Horde, a branch of the Mongol Golden Horde, after Khan Tokhtamysh was defeated by Amir Timur and accepted the protection of Grand Duke Vytautas the Great. They became a vital part of the Lithuanian military and continued to serve through the Polish–Lithuanian unions that culminated in 1569. Over time they adopted many elements of Polish and Lithuanian Christian culture while remaining loyal soldiers of the Commonwealth, until the Second Polish–Ottoman War sparked the Lipka rebellion in 1672.
About 3,000 Tatar cavalry under Aleksander Kryczyński defected to the Ottomans, but his death and Jan Sobieski’s 1674 amnesty—restoring their traditional rights—brought most back into Commonwealth service. After becoming king, Sobieski confirmed these privileges and granted them land. In 1683 Lipka Tatar regiments joined his 27,000-strong Polish army in the relief of Vienna, marking themselves with straw to avoid confusion with Ottoman Tatars, and helped secure victory alongside Imperial forces under Charles of Lorraine.

DeleteProlific Ray and great to see some Essex miniatures cross the field, suitably understated painting as you would expect for steppe warriors - roll up "Borodin's" musical piece - go listen :)
ReplyDeleteIts a great piece of music!
DeleteMarvellous. I do love the Essex 15mm figures. Full of character and you have done a great job bringing that out.
ReplyDeleteThanks Adam, I love an Essex 15!!!
